THIRD YEAR: 1947-48 On September 11, 1947, the class of 49 returned to the venerable halls of B C Hxgh to launch thexr thlrd vear of classical studles and deepenlng frlend sh1ps The followlng mornlng the new Jumors Jomed w1th thelr fellow students and the facultv to ask the llght and guldance of the Holy Ghost throughout the comlng year as Father Hewltt cele brated Mass and Solemn Benedlctlon To lmpart to us more advanced knowl edge of the classlcs was the task suc cessfully accompllshed by our home room teachers Fathers Scannell Coak ley Vaughan McLaughl1n Ryan Sull1 van and Keane and Messrs Mahoney and Fltzgerald all of the Socletv of Jesus and Messrs Cleary and McLoud of the lay faculty Ready to explam the theorems of Geometry were Fathers Mulcahy and Logue as well as Messrs K1ley MOFFIS and Broderlck Fathers Blals Sherldan and Messrs Klernan and Corkery tutored the French classes wh1le Mr Supple lntroduced the Teutomc tongue to the new German students We cordlally welcomed Fr Lawrence Ryan our newlv appolnted student counselor and under h1s dlrectlon the Sodallty of our Blessed Mother fostered the Splrlt of sanctlty and devotlon among the entlre student body Durmg the week of October 14th Father James GBVIH conducted the Jumor retreat the most important act1v1ty of the Fall On December 11th and 12th the Father Mulchay offered two splendld presentatlons of Career Angel at Latln School Audltorlum The first half of our Thlrd Year was roarlng to a close and after a cheerful Chrlstmas yacatlon we returned to face the menace of m1d years Spendlng two weeks to arm ourselves w1th repet1t1ons we completely vanqulshed our foe and emerged at the gatewav of the second semester On the evenlng of Aprll 9th the par ents of the thlrd year students re sponded 1n great numbers to the annual 1nv1tat1on to VlS1t the school and meet thelr sons teachers Through the lndustry and llterarv dbllltX of all who contrlbuted to the Botolphzmz B C Hlgh enjoy ed a smgu lar honor The Columbla Scholastlc Press Assocxatlon awarded to the Botol 19 Oul Lady s Sh11ne phzau the medal svmbollc of first p117e as It surpassed 1n hterature art and humor all other entrles ln 1ts class 1n the natlon w1de contest The Annual Pubhc Speaklng Contest for thlrd vear was held Aprll 14th The Klrk James Llvlngstone Peter Noonan and Frank Stapleton all showed fine oratorxcal ab1l1ty as John M McClellan was awarded the gold medal for h1s ex cellent dehvery of Spartacus to the Gladlators Led by the basketball squad whlch won three trophles whlle CODp1Hg the Boston Cltv Champlonshlp B C Hlgh athletlc teams scored envlable records ln everv sport Keepmg apace wlth the growmg enthuslasm for sports newly organlzed Tenms and Golf teams were added to the school athletlc roster At last we completed our final exams and enjoy mg Undergraduate Iylght wlth medals and prlzes for all who ex celled 1n thelr studles yye looked back on a frultful yeal of hald yyork and pleas ant memories J ROGER CORNELLIER Y A' I L- ' ' y .V s vi ' l K Y .
