SHORT TO SECOND T0 FIRST-BASEBALL When the snow disappears from the ground and the warm spring breezes be- gin to blow, all thoughts turn to the baseball diamond and young hearts yearn again to hear the crack of a bat as it meets the ball, or the thud as a blazing fast ball strikes the catcher's mitt. Now letls review the years since we first heard those welcome words at B. C. H.: Baseball candidates report... 1946 It was Fella Gintoff who was our first coach way back in '46, He soon proved a master at handling young ballplayers. When the season opened the powerful Eaglets ran up a win record of nine straight before losing a game. Crehan and Shellenback shouldered the ma1o1 ity of the mound duties vuth Captain Walt Murphy catching for them. Con- cannon and Cattaneo performed their double play magic around second base and their throws were capably handled by Jack Casey at the first sack. Mulligan and Hartnett patrolled the outfield pas- tures. A single loss to English resulted in a tie with them for the championship and a play-off resulted in the downfall of the Eaglets. 1947 Our new coach, Dan Weitekamp. molded a championship team from a nucleus of five veterans and twenty other aggressive ballplayers, led by Captain Jack Concannon at second base and his double play twin Ray Cattaneo at short. John McLaughlin took over the catching duties Daxe Cxehan and Jack NItEl1ox in ere the retulning mound pei out IOXX tit nm 1 lt it im undioxx ltft tonight it gan L L in a 1 1 Fr ' ': l-' to right: Kt'2XllllLl', Yzxli rl -.
