THE SODALITY MOLDER OF CHARACTER AND HONOR The outstanding functlon of Boston College High School as of any Jesuit High is the Sodahty of Our Lady The original Sodahty was founded by a Jesuit scholastic 1n 1563 for the pur pose of unltlng the young men of the time in special bands to do honor to the Blessed Mother The membership was select the requirements strlct As the vears passed the Sodahty grew and it was carried to many lnstltutions throughout the world wherever the sons of Ignatlus could be found Instltuted at Boston College High w1th the founda tion of the school lt has always been the prlme activity ln the lives of the stu dents As ltS motlve for existence in crease of love of God through devotion to Mary IS also equlvalent to the basic reason for our enrollment at a Catholic High School it is no wonder that the Sodahty has grown and prospered as It as In the fall of 1945 vslth the establish bu1ld1ng on Massachusetts Avenue a separate branch of the school Sodahty was formed under the direction of Father Lawrence M Ryan SJ the newly appointed first year Student Counsellor Father Ryan spent this year prepar ing the future full fledged Sodahsts and showing them their dutles smce each boy must know and fully understand the alms and purposes of the Sodahty and the benefits derived from membershlp before he is offlclally recelved into it It IS during this vear that future Sodahsts become acquainted with the weekly So dallty meetmgs 1n vshlch a short 1nstruc tion IS glven Upon our entrance 1nto the main school the follovxlng year we had as our Vloderator Father Paul Baxrx SJ whose untlrlng energy lmbued us all l115Ql with a sense of the need of action Under his 1nsp1r1ng leadershlp a total of more than S28 000 dollars was collected for the B C High Building Fund whlle the Little Slsters of the Poor profited con slderably from the assorted foodstuffs contributed by the student body How ever Father Barry was forced to leave us on account of 1ll health and Father John Hughes S J became the tempo rary moderator At the close of the year the fruition of our efforts was obtained when we knelt at the altar ra1l and were officially received 1nto the Sodahty of Our Lady Durlng our Junior Year we had Father Lawrence Ryan S J once more as our Moderator and as Seniors Father Louis Logue S J took charge There were notable occurrences in both vears Father Ryan personally con ducted a Mission Symposium of six Re l1g1ous Orders on the B C H stage ln the Spring of Junlor Year Included tives of the White Fathers Columban Fathers the Maryknoll Missionaries the Oblates the Paullsts and a Secular Priest The event proved successful and profitable Father Logue directed a speclal fund Campalgn for the benefit of the Vatican Broadcastlng Station throughout the school immediately after Christmas of Senior Year Thls too was a great success almost S1 O00 being collected for the use of the Holy Father For some of us ou1 actixe Sodalltx days are ended But alvx ays in tlmes of trouble and stress or of Jog. and exulta tion always the sp1r1t of loxe and char lty first fosteled ln our hearts as mem bers of Our Lady s Sodahty uill remain xx 1th us JAMES F GIBBONS ALLENF HI-JTHERINGTON JR - 7 ' ! . . , ., - - . . s , S - , K , n 0, - 7 Y , . . u . n - . . 3 . y ' . !
