OSTON COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL has always been way up among JW the leaders in High School baseball circles and never has a class A , graduated from the school without having a team to be proud of for G the rest of its college and business life Th1s success has usually resided in the pitching staff of our teams They were always the best in the City and State The class of Z8 will never be able to forget the names of Normle Slms Rosy Ryan or Lefty' Leonard Shut out games strikeouts by the twenties victories by the scores have been the records of the teams for WhlCh these men twlrled Then there were the short fielders and the hitters In our time there graduated Jerry Shanahan who matriculated at Holy Cross and whom Jack Barry the astute coach of that college declared was the best third baseman he had ever seen Sims also went to Holy Cross and is repeatmg there the triumphs of h1s high school career It may be that we read more of our team than we actually saw for the same reason that prevented us from seeing more of our other teams in action namely the absence of a home grounds on which to play our games Stlll what we read others m the rest of the state and country read and the glory that our baseball teams reflected on us has been great They were fine teams In our Freshman year Hank O Day now starring at Boston College was making the newspaper men place him on their All star teams by his hitting and fielding at the hot corner and Normle Sims was the sophomore pitching star of schoolboy ranks while Jerry Shanahan was stopping everythlng at short In that vear a team was developed that was to startle the state by passing through a season without a defeat founding a legitimate claim to the Championship of the State Then came Sophomore O Day had graduated to Boston College but Shanahan was still the fieldlng star of the city and Normle Sims pitched so well that he was made All Scholastic pitcher for that year Bud Ryan appears this year for the first time as a strikeout king and the season despite the lack of good fielders was a success Johnny Donahue held first base that year Jumor year found Donahue still a star for speed and Helding Sims still the best of the pitchers and Ryan startling the scholastlc world by the number of his trikeouts This was Sims last year and he had lost but four games in all his time pitching for the school Together Ryan and himself had run up a total of 167 strlkeouts 1n eleven games for 1927 Of these Ryan had gotten 90 in fifty lnnmgs Again Normie was All star and won his post season games Senior year came around and found Sims at Holy Cross and Ryan at B C and B C High apparently without any pitcher But that is not the way at James Street We played our first game with Commerce and the newspapers the next morning carried the captlon No h1t no run game for Lefty Leonard of B C High Leonard had not come out for the team until his semor year and he IS a real star Besldes him there is a new catcher par excellence . McIntyre, Ed Martin, Donahue, Joe Kelley, Captam Walter Kelley, Eddie Gallagher and Concannnn are also there, all of 1998 All can hit. and all can field, and from the looks of things lt IS the best all around team B C High has had in the past four years, and the pitching of Leonard makesifropes bright for the season Thus, 1928 has continued the glorious record preceding veads, not in baseball alone, but in all sports Page Une Hundred Snh num fi Y -5 QJ - ..
