' I -5 . w 0 1 . l I I 'lllllluln ummm: M ,Q 1-1 S. i X -uv? f P X ff X E, RACK WllSl'1llZStl1I'lll1I'1gQVQTltS the 300 the 600 the 1000 and QRS the relay races, has had a rather poor exlstence from the standpolnt Jw fs of the cheerlng spectator and rooter at B CH1gh for the past four f years due to the bulldlng of the outdoor track The track IS fine l lndeed but when It IS covered wlth a foot or more of snow as It usually IS durlng the wlnter when the track squad must do thelr DIAC tlclng, lt IS not very servlceable Even when lt has been cleaned by lndustrlous managers and thelr asslstants, the coatlng of ICQ that remalns renders practlce on It more hazardous than beneflclal Besldes the outdoor track wlth 1tS large stretches of stralghtaway and lts smooth corners do not glve good tralnlng for lndoor meets ln gyms that have short stralghtaways of narrow track and sharplv banked corners It also prevents our holdlng com petltlve meets at our own school slnce the aforementloned snow renders It useless for the greater part of the season Hence the track meets from the standpolnt of the spectator are few, and from the standpolnt of the runners are dlsappolntlng, slnce thev are forced so oft n to find themselves boxed on lIlClO0I' tracks Wlth WhlCh they are unfamlllar Thls IS the real relson fol the apparent lack of success ln track for the past few years because after all there lb no denylng that there IS a certaln technlque ln runnlng ln the stuffy lndoor alr and on lndoor banked tracks that must be acqulred by long and constant practlce Nelther can It be denled that most schools have such tracks and that B C Hlgh due to the lack of one IS forced to run away from home So then the greatest good Wlll and constancy ln practlce IS obvlated by the lack of proper tralnlng facllltles and our boys do not wln as many races as they ought our rc y al, undel the ellvectloll of Jake Drlscoll the famous B C and Olympic star we had Junlor Intermedlate and Senlor dlvlslon teams and meets wlth all the Clty Schools The Junlors and Intermedlates were very successful, and It was ln thls dlvlslon that the men of Z8 began to attract 'lttentlon Al 0Shea and Johnny Donahue especlally That same ye lr the qenlor dlvlslon was made glorlous by the names of Cadran John Sulllvan 'VIcCabe Mulcahy and others They had the champ relay team of the clty and Cadran was unbeatable ln the dash Sophomore found only the relay team le ft and Mr Heaphy as coach The most remalkablc feature of thls year was the wlnnlng of the Senlor relay champlonshlp at M6Ch3HlCS Bulldlng by Cadran, Kamlsh Donahue and Mulcahy Onlv Senlor dlvlslon teams were ln competltlon but Donahue was elected captaln for the next year Devlln appeared as a hly,,h Jumper and O Shea stlll contlnued to star as a dashman Junlor found Donahue as Cdptaln Devlln supreme ln the hlgh Jump and O Shea leader ln the dashes Once agaln Junlor and Intelmedlatc teams were competlng and Lang Knlght and several others began to show real class No champlonshlp was won thl vear but the bplrlt was never better Mr Nolan SJ coached the track can illtldttgg Then came our Senlor Year and found Devlln as captlln OShea stlll leader ln the dash and Donahue runnlnsf wlld ln the 300 and 600 Indoor runnlng tracks were agaln the cause of our defeats and therefore thls team, that was characterlzed by the most wonderful snlrlt of all. was not as successful as some others of our past The Splflt was there all the tlme, but the- dlfficultles of practlce and strangeness of competltlon on 1FlflOOl' tracks marred the track career of '98 Page Une' Hundrvcl Sun Ihrvr'

CAPTAIN JIMMY DEVLIIN Jlmmy wlth hls smxle and cheerful confi dence and courage would have made one of the best competing captalns we had lf lnjurxes to hlS ankle had not kept hlm out of compe tltlon durmg' Senior As It was even before hlS ankle was even half healed he lnslsted on leadlng hls team ln the Jump The pam was terrlnc as hls dlstorted face often showed and hls great heart was sad when he saw lesser men beatlng hlm at helghts he had achieved m first vear But he would not gave up and we have a noble example of B C Hlgh courage to cherxsh all our days All hall to Jlmmy ' THOMAS TOM BARRY Broad Jumpers were scarce ln the begmmng of Senior year and the coach saw all the pomts m thls event golng to opposing schools But Tom Barry with the Splrlt of 28 was not of the same mlnd so he loosened up h1s legs and put on a track suit and entered compe 1 event dld not go to other schools He 1orced all the foe to stretch themselves to the llmlt and but for hlS lnexperlence would have come 'lW'lV with the tltle ln the final meets IOHN JOHNNY DONAHUT Thus tall and lanky vouth was the sensatmn of the track season as a Junlor an Intermcdl ate and 1 Senlor Llke clastxc lands those logs of hls stretched OVCI the course to fre quently carry home the bacon for B C Hlgh The blgger and better the competltxon the bet ter he llked It So good was he that he wls elected to captaln the team whlle he was stall a Junlor and how he led hxs team to vlctorx Even as he was always a xlctor ln hlgh school so we expect to see hlm smlllngly capture all honors In the colleglate 600 Page One Hundred Slxty four V 44 n 1 as ' rv ' ' ' - , X .
