the boys and Ill put '1 team on thc field that wlll do honol to the school The splendld manner 1n whlch he moulded a group of green men Sen1ors most of them and out for the team for the first t1me mto a matured and capable foot ball machlne and then placed the team on the field to shame teams of heralded fame was a source of wonder to us all and a great trlbute to h1s lnsplrlng splrlt and h1s football ab1l1ty We started the season wlth practically no schedule, owlng to the same dlffi culty wlth the local schools but Mr Sulllvan SJ and Mr McManus soon had some kmd of a schedule patched up The first game we had w1th F1tchburg, but that only served to show how far we had to go We lost but not wlthout glvlng evldence of a rapldly mouldlng team of good players Then came the St Marys game that brought the crowds to Waltham to see our 1nexper1enced team trounce the seasoned players of that clty After a very hard struggle we lost to Medford and then came the St James game agam Each year brmgs a new thrlll to that game Thls year we had a new coach and a new team that had not as yet proved all 1ts worth St James had had an epxdemlc that kept xts players off the field for more than a month Would these equahze the advantages for both? We dld not know and xt was a dellclous gamble Thus the rallles ln the hall and the rush for seats ln the now annual bus trxp were more hvely than ever before and the crowd that finally gathered at the St James stadlum before the three cheer leaders Joe Conley Merrlck and Red Greaney was blgger more enthuslastlc and hvely than ever before What a game that was' There was not a throat 1n that Whole crowd that could do more than whlsper when the game was over But the game was not ours The St James crowd may have lacked practlce but It was a veteran team and they were rldlng hlgh and handsome that day and the green team of B C Hxgh went down to defeat but not mglorlously for on that day there arose heroes who had not as yet swum mto our ken Rlce was a brllhant halfback McCullough 30 flashed as a back Connaty 29 as an end and a host of others that gave hope of B C Hlgh supremacy ln the future Thus ended the football career of the men of 1928 The dlfficultles of havmg no home field on whlch to practlce and play games of gettmg games w1th local hlgh schools that would enable the team to have the support of a cheerlng section the hostxllty that seemed so evldent agamst the bearers of the Maroon and Old Gold were offset by the enthusiasm of an ardent body of supporters that followed the team whenever lt was posslble by the eagerness of the squad and especlally the mem bers of 28 to equal and surpass the glorlous records of the past by the constant care and teachmg of the coaches Mr Heaphy and Mr McManus and the devo tion too llttle mentloned of Mr McHugh of Speclal Class who never falled to attend every game the team plaved to g1VQ them the benefit of h1s knowledge of first a1d IH thelr lI1JuI'l6S All these serve to make happy the memorles of these games and these trlals lhe players will always recall the games and the d1Hicult1es of practlce wlth many a laugh at the worrles that then seemed so momentous and the cheermg sectlon w1ll ever thrxll wlth prlde at the efforts of the team and with thanks for the opportunity they gave them to be once agam ln a new wav proud of Boston College Hlgh School and the banners of I old md Maroon 3.469 Pu 0 Um' llumlrul forts nmc 1 , K f i I Y. - 4 l .U 1 y 9 . y - 3 ' , . , . ., . . . - s , . . , ' ax N ' ' u H ' ' 1 1 , . , . , . plaved Ie lry Shanahan He nny Buekley the three Swans Joe Ed and Iat Jlm Murray, Pat Bellew Red Whlte many of them All Seholastle choxee s, anel what a team that was' Par and wlde they traveled over the state evelvyvhe le takmg game s with that easy fac1l1tv of forwarel passmg, end runnlng and line plungmg that made Mr Heaphy famous as a high school coach It was ln thls year that we stalted the first of the famous gathermgs at the annual St James game at Haverhlll It had been commg for a long tlme and the won derful smoothness of thls team had stlrred such hopes ln the student body that thev thought the tlme was surely rlpe to glve the Haycrhlll school the trlm mmg of thelr llves Hence several busses were chartered and the crowd of 800 strong, all cheerlng and happy, took the road to Haverhlll early on Thanksglvlng morning Some took the cold rlde ln Colleege HIVVCFS others ln opulent sedans but the best rlde of all was ln the school busses Then we started the cheers that had been practxced so sedulously ln the Hall for a whole week But the fates were agalnst us once more and, although the Old Gold and Maroon squad played rlngs around the boys from Haverhill we were not able to pull the game from the fire and lost to the sad score of 17 to 14 As the football season goes so goe the rest of the athletlc year and the splrxt of enthuslasm and support that made thls season such a memorable one was cirrled along tell the followmg fall Several of the best players were lost by graduatlon but thls vear saw the hne from tackle to tackle lntact and all of the Senlor class The season of 1927 then lookeel llke a propltlous yeir for the beatlng of St James and the whole school was rxrlng to go Jerry Shanahan had gone to Holy Fross, Pat Bellew had departed for St John s Prep , Hennv Bucklev was wlth Boston College I VK Sulllvan Comerford Sllney Red Whlte, and Eel Swan had gone but we had Bud Gorman Hlckev, Murray Mason, Froton Coleman and Fltzpatrlck from the year befole, md George ONe1l Joe Kelly Bull Bennett Martln Bud Sulllvan and Muggsy Mallctt Joe Mahoney and Woody Shanahan were new llghts that began to show super excellent ab1l1ty at the best of games In thls year the stars of 28 began to make themselves known and thelr good work had a great deal to elo w1th the wonderful showmg the team m xde The same dlfliculty of games was agaln experlenced and we had to travel at New Bedford later they won amld a r1ot at Leominster and then a trlp to Portland Me , to play a game on Armlstlce Day there Here they showed thelr callbre by wmnlng by three touchdowns George 0 Nell was hlgh scorer Joe Kellv a sure man ln the backHeld At Portland Mallett broke h1s collarbone and we gaye a groan of despaxr as we thought of the St James game w1thout hls off tackle SIICGS But Thanksgxylng dav came round and a broken and patched up team went to Haye rhnll accompanled by ln eye n greater crowd than that of the prevlous yeal Before the game we had no quartelback slnce Cole man had been 1nJured the diy before But this team had the light and the clowd we ll begglng them to aye nge the flukey defeat of the year befole Cole man responded though lnjured and hls memorable dash for a touchdown wlll never be forgotten Nelther w1ll we forget the lme plunglng of George O Nell nor the slashmg play of Bud Sulllvan or Bell Bennett nor Joe Ke llv s wonderful earrylng of the ball We won anel It wls a happv erowd that wendeel the lr w IV b xek to thelr Th lnksglymg turkey Then e eme our Senlol yeal It found a new eoaeh it the llnes anel almost 'ell the olel lfleltllldl gone Of the famous team of the ye ir before only Blll Bennett Buel Sulllyan George ONexl and Captun Joe Kelly remamed A new te un hed to be bullt from the ground up Woulel St James beat us again lt looked as though we were In for a bad season But, here we should say a few words about the new eoaeh Mr McManus Art McManus as he had been known to all of us when he was a star at B C came at a eruclal tlme He had to equal the record of the superb Heaphv md he had no te lm to help him We owe hlm a great debt of gratltude for his wonderful efforts to put a team on the field that would uphold the prestlge of his old Alma Mate r He rece lved the devastatlons from last years graduation Wlth hes wonderful smlle and sfud Glye me a llttle time and co operatlon and have patlence wxth Page Une Hundred Forty Plbhf , U 11 L , ,yy I ee A ,yr I X I x ,, , ee vs se ya , ' I , 1 4 . 1 ' f 1 1 I ee 3, H u - n , le , H A A , s j U ' , 1 1 , , . 1 ' . 1 - e 1 . 1 - f ' ' .
