SMYERS Commander Smyers, BOSTON's Executive Of- ficer, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up at Point Breeze before he entered the Navy. He attended Peabody High School in Pitts- burgh and entered the Naval Academy in 1938. He was graduated from Annapolis in 1942 and was ordered directly to the Pacific Fleet. He spent most of his wartime duty on board the USS MIN- NEAPOLIS and USS NEW JERSEY in the Pacific. Since the war, he has served primarily in the Atlantic Fleet, serving in cruisers, carriers and destroyers and participating in eight cruises to the Mediterranean. Additionally, he has been as- signed ashore as an instructor of Ordnance and Gunnery at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the U. S. Naval Academy. Before reporting to USS BOSTON, he was Commanding Officer of the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hingham, Mas- sachusetts. Commander Smyers is married to the former Miss Polly Whites, also from Pittsburgh. Until her marriage she resided in Stanton Heights The Commanders parents Mr and Mrs Charles W Smyers still reside at 634 Kirtland Street Pitts burgh Pa COVI MAN DER ROBERT S. LEWELLEN Commander Lewellen reported aboard at Thes- saloniki in October to relieve Commander Smyers as Executive Officer. Having served mainly' in Pacific waters, this was the Commander's first Mediterranean deployment since World War Il. Graduating in 1943 from the U.S. Naval Acad- emy at Annapolis, Commander Lewellen reported aboard USS QUICK KDD-4903 and before reassign- ment fifty-one months later, was made Executive Officer. QUICK operated as a convoy escort In the Northern Atlantic until the close of World War II, when she was converted to a DMS and transferred to the Pacific Fleet. Before reporting aboard BOSTON the Com- mander had had command of USS VAMMEN lDE-6441 and USS BUCK KDD-7611. His most re- cently completed tour of duty was as Naval Attache at Colombo, Ceylon. Commander Lewellen, a native of Owensboro, Kentucky, is married to the former Miss Jane E.
