Q :aww MZJQQQEQE 28 SEPTEMBER 1962 THROUGH 1 OCTOBER 1962 Beirut . . . an Eastern city with Western manners, this cosmopolitan metropolis intrigued the BOSTON crew who visited her. The streets were a hopeless tangle of everything from bat- tered ox carts to shiny new American made carsg the crowds walkingthe streets wore everything from Parisian imports to all encompassing veils and baggy pants. A little bit of everything combined into a big whirl of exciting confusion . . . this was Beirut, Paris in Lebanon. ln brief ceremonies during BOSTON's visit to Beirut, Captain Colbert presented an iron lung, a sterilizer, hospital beds and tables and other equipment and supplies to the Sidon Hospitali later, drugstand therapeutic foods were donated to the Islamic Hospital of Tripoli. l l i 1 62 V L, 1 i i 4 . i , il F if ,H nf! iii 1 . 1 . Beirut and BOSTON have a fine meeting in a mutual craze . . . the twist, and com- municate best through modern song and dance. Qc Lawrence of Arabia had nothing on us as we ven- tured to Baalbek, outside the city. There we found magnificent ruins, great stone staircases, further ex- amples of ruined columns. But, too, we took our first, tentative ride on a camel, sporting sheik's headgear, and understood for the first time what it means to caravan across Africa's huge wastes of desert. 64 -' ..-as +f '::vvwf'Z iii ff. 1-f 1f .:l1i'-TT ?51v .' i+i'tT?'??'T'l . w .W A-1.-,Y,,., J. . ..,.. - - -A ' . -- EAPON S r- . f ' fe?f'fgf W Jw 4 is Z f G QV - W 5 gi g 5 I I ? 1514 1111 5 '31 li' M111 qi gg: 115,324 gn if ,IL E! . The Togni circus was taken over by the ship for one day for an exclusive showing for the orphans of Genoa . . . in all, 1700 children attended. Later that day, they were invited out to the ship for refreshments. Though it was wet and cold, the men enjoyed New Year's Eve in this fine Northern Italian port. Its narrow, medieval alleys and streets set this beautiful city apart from all others visited on the cruise. Her buildings, galleries, and shops are crammed with the treasures of centuries ago. lts cultural splendor is unrivalled, as is its beautiful architecture. Livorno itself is a quiet city, centered around the sea-fishermen, naval academy students, small boats. Nearby, the Camp Darby PX seemed one of the modern wonders of the world, where our wallets emptied quickly for some modern treasures.
