CAPT. ROBERT L. TAYLOR Captain Robert L. Taylor served as our Commanding Officer from 9 August 1957 until July 1958. Born in Russelville, Arkansas, the Captain attended high school in Michigan and graduated from the Naval Academy with the class of 1931. Twenty-seven years of naval service found Captain Taylor ina series of assignments which were as varied as they were inte resting. Before World War II he served' aboard the USS TENNESSEE, USS LEA, USS HENDERSON, USS HALE, and USS PRESTON in addition to attending a postgraduate course in ordnance engineering at Ann- apolis. The war years found him serving on the staff of Commander South- west Pacific and as Commanding Officer of the USS VALETTE. While serving in the latter assignment, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for assisting in destroying about 1000 enemy troops at- tempting to withdraw from the Solomons. In the last year of the war he returned to the U. S. and worked at the Naval Proving Grounds., Dalghren, Virginia.
