The past three years have taken the BOSTON far afield. Twice 'deployed to the Mediterranean as a member of the SIXTH FLEET, she has partici- pated in both good will missions and as astrong arm of'American demo- cracy overseas. She was the proud flagship in the International Naval Review at Hampton Roads in 1957, and participated in the funeral of King Haakon of Norway later in the year as the official United States representa -r tive. Her many cruises have included voyages through the Panama Canal, across the Equator, and across the Arctic Circle during the 1957 NATO exercises, A veteran of 100 Terrier Missile firings, BOSTON has had a major part in the development and fleet use of this lethal weapon. From the days of muzzle loaders to the present era of over-the -horizon guided missiles , the name BOSTON has stood for a firstline fighting ship. As the deadliest of her name, USS BOSTON QCAG-ll stands prepared as did her forebearers to fulfill any mission assigned by her country and her people. Missiles Away! I

SOUTH PACIFIC LIBERTY xg CASUALTY She anchored in Tokyo Bay on Sep- tember 3 , 1945 with silent guns pointed at the Japanese shore line. N0 threatening planes roared overhead, On deck ,sailors pointed at misty Fujiyama and boarded liberty boats to go ashore. The war in the Pacific had come to an end. and the BOSTON had earned ten battle stars livingiup to the record set by her predecessors. The next decade was a quiet one for the BOSTON. Nested and moth- balled she waited the call to action and it came in 1955. Singled out to become the world's first guided missile cruiser, she received ex- tensive renovation 'and alteration be- fore leaving the yards at Camden as USS BOSTON QCAG-ll. U.s.,s. ' Nw 27 Another year draws to a close. For the BOSTON it was a year which again made clear our dual mission as a go-boat and showboat . The re were moments of gaiety and frivolity in such ple as ant liberty ports as Athens and Palma. There were also moments of knife edge suspense so well illustrated by our part in the Mid East Crisis and at the time of the Nixon incident in Venezuela. And between the re We re the never ending labors of the seafaring man--the chipping, the painting, the drills, the shooting - the myriad tasks which make up our day to day existence, the summation of which spells battle efficiency. The pages which follow tell the story of our life and that of our ship during the past twelve months.
