Pearl Harbor Day found the Admiral aboard the NEW MEXICO, and he served aboard that battleship as gunnery officer until the spring of 1943. The final two years of the war found Admiral Martell carrying out duties on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief, U. S. Fleet. After the war, the Admiral commanded first the USS UNION QAKA-1062 and then the USS AUCILLA QAO-561 before returning to the office of CNO in 1948 as Assistant Director of the Atomic Energy Division.
