Being a member of the Quill and Scroll is a very high achievement to members of the Bearfacts and Les Memoires staffs at B.H.S. It promotes higher standards of iournalism in high school publications. To be eligible, the student must be a iunior or senior, in the upper third of his class scholastically and recommended by the adviser of the organ- ization to which he belongs. The advisers, Mrs. Neal and Mrs. Stamper, keep accurate records and carefully select the students who are to belong to the club. The students on the Bearfacts and Les Memoires staffs strive to maintain their high scholastic average so they may become a member of the Quill and Scroll. In February, the new members are notified of their acceptance into the club. An initia- tion ceremony is held in the spring to present them their pins and membership cards. Director Q The T959-60 Bossier High Band, under the direction of Kenneth L. Green and assistant Frank Hess, had an exciting and eventful year. The Lions International Parade in New York City on June 30 was one of the high spots. The band repeated their Miami and San Francisco triumphs and again took first place in the competitive parade. The trip itself was filled with many fine opportunities for picture taking and sight-seeing. For fun and relaxation, the two day stay in Atlantic City was tops. The real high point of the year came on January l, l96O. The band performed a six minute half-time show at the Sugar Bowl game. The spontaneous national acclaim the band received far exceeded Mr. Green's expectations. The Sugar Bowl committee stated: the Bossier High Band performance was the best witnessed in the 26 years of Sugar Bowl History. The band continued its winning ways during the season in the State marching and playing contests and are eagerly looking forward to another year of competition and shows. The Pep Squad is composed of about one- hundred girls. It is divided into four small squads each composed of twenty-five,girls with a squad leader. The squad leaders give five merit points to the girls at each meeting, practice sessions, and ball games. Merit points are given for promptness, conduct, attendance, appearance of the uniform and co-operation with squad leaders and fellow Pep Kats. The Pep Squad attended both out of town games and home games. The chartered buses for the out of town games, were paid for by cake sales, the sale of Bearkat pins, and many other worthy protects. At the end of the year an award is given for the most spirited Pep Kat. Promote School Spirit One of the highest honors that a girl can re- ceive is to be elected to the position ot cheer- leader. The present cheerleaders were elected at the close ot the last school year. All are previous Pep Kat members and were elected by the stu- dent body. Last summer the cheerleaders attended a cheer- leader school held in Huntsville, Texas, at Texas State Teacher's College. The school was attended by other cheerleaders from Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, and many other parts ot the United States. Competition was held among these cheer- leaders each day. ln this competition the Bossier High cheerleaders ranked first. The cheerleaders are in charge of our pep meetings and have done a tine iob boosting our school spirit. BILL McCLUNG Bearkats March to State Semifinals The T959 football season was an interesting one for Bossier fans. Although the Bearkats posted a not-too-impressive 6-5-l record, they won the District l-AAA championship and marched to the state semifinals before losing to eventual state king, lstrouma, 27-12, in a hard-fought game at Baton Rouge. Head coach Bill Maxwell and assistants Chuck Birtman, Bobby Ray McHalffey, Joe Murry, and Neal Thompson used a small nucleus of veterans and inspired play of iuniors and sophomores to add another successful campaign to the B.H.S. record. When the firing was over, 230-pound tackle-fullback Robbie Huckle- bridge was named to the Class AAA all-state team and guard Richard Enis and halfback Bill NlcClung were avvarded second-team berths. Hucklebridge, Enis, McClung, and center Archie Wilson made the all- district and all-city teams and tackle-end Thomas Harr joined that quartet on The Times' All-City team. Fumbles and other offensive mistakes hurt the Bearkats all season, especially early in the campaign. Bossier carried a poor 2-4-l record into its crucial district game with Fair Park, but the Bearkats won that one easily. The 'Kats gained 402 yards against The outmanned Flyers. McClung gained 180 yards in 21 carries and quarterback Dennis Kile scored twice on runs of 92 and one yards. McClung scored the other TD and Hucklebridge kicked Two extra points. The Flyers trailed only 13-6 aT halftime, Thanks to a 16-yard Touchdown pass from Tim Nliciotto to end Don Clark. Bossier - 7 North Caddo - 7 The Bearkats, playing at home again, needed an 80-yard Touch- down drive in The fourth quarter to tie the Rebels from North Caddo. Although Bossier gained 340 yards and owned a 22-7 edge in first downs, 10 fumbles nearly wrecked the Bearkats. Tommy Taylor went five yards for the touchdown and bulled across for the tying extra point with 2:22 left in the game. Kenny Tidwell's 67-yard run and Ronny Loyd's conversion had given North Caddo a 7-O lead. Hucklebridge, Enis and Wilson were top hands on defense. McClung gained 144 yards in 23 carries, Taylor added 137 in 17 lugs. Bossier - 6 Minden - 19 Minden fullback Bobby Ashley's one-man show stunned the 'Kats, 19-6, in this annual grudge battle at Bossier City. Ashley scored all three Tide TD's - one on a 95-yard kickoff return - and gained 140 yards in 15 efforts. David Lee kicked one extra point for Minden. Bill Alley, who gained 116 yards in 15 carries, set up Bossier's score with a 41-yard dash and then scored on a one-yard plunge to give the 'Kats an early 6-0 lead. The Bearkats threatened throughout the fourth period, but couldn't score, Bossier - 6 Springhill - 14 The slumping 'Kats went to Springhill in their first road outing and dropped a I4-6 decision to the Lumberiacks. The flu-weakened Bearkats lost three fumbles deep in Springhill territory and lost despite outgaining the hosts. The penalty-plagued 'Kats, playing without ace guard Enis, scored in the second half on McClung's five-yard romp. Bossier - 21 Fair Park - 7 Hucklebridge was moved to fullback for the important Fair Park game and the 230-pound blaster sparked the 'Kats to a 21-7 triumph. The 'Kats drove 94 yards for a fourth-quarter score which sewed up their first win over the Indians since l955. McClung went 54 yards for one score, Alley galloped 67 for another and Hucklebridge bulled one yard for the third. Alley scored one extra point, Huckle- bridge two. Billy Vice's one-yard lunge and extra point put the Tribe ahead 7-O in the first period and the passing of Donnie Carroll gave 'Kat partisans several anxious moments the rest of the way. Bossier - 26 Ouachita - 6 Bossier wrapped up the 1-AAA flag with a one-sided 26-6 decision over Ouachita in the rain and mud at Monroe. l-lucklebridge, running like a tank, annihilated the lighter Lion forward wall with 183 yards in 19 carries and McClung added 129 in 16 charges. Hucklebridge pounded 60 yards for the go-ahead score on the first play of the third period and McClung and Alley scored later on runs of 3 and 13 yards, respectively. Hucklebridge and Cook added extra points to complete the scoring. A great defense choked Ouachita after its first-quarter drive, Bossier - 13 Haynesville - 6 The Bearkats returned home and shattered 1-laynesville's three- year iinx with a 13-6 triumph, but it took a pair of fourth-period touchdowns to stop the fired-up Tornado. Eight fumbles and a blocked punt ruined Bossier's state championship dreams, but the great defensive play of Enis, Fitzgerald and Kile and the running of Hucklebridge and McClung gave Istrouma its hardest game of the season against a Louisiana team. All-state halfback Donnie Cotten scored Istrouma touchdowns on runs of 59, 30 and five yards and Gene Achord added another on a tvvo-yard slant. Jack Webb con- verted three times. McClung Went 19 yards for one Bossier tally and Huclclebridge went tvvo yards for the other. Alley's dazzling 46-yard punt return set up the first 'Kat touchdown. Cecil Upshaw and Max Nix make last attempt to defeat opponents. Surrounded by host of opponents, Donnie Lewis comes to the aid of Upshaw. Probably the best Bossier team in history and one of the greatest high school teams in North Louisiana history - that's what sports writers were saying about the 1959- 60 Bearkat squad after it had compiled a fabulous 37-4 record, nailed down its second straight District l-AAA title, and entered the state playoffs. Coach John CHoundl McConathy's tall, tal- ented aggregation had a remarkable season. The Bearkats won five of the six tournaments they entered, wound up the season ranked No. l in The Shreveport Times' North Lou- isiana cage rating, gained countless all-tourna- ment berths, placed four men on the first two All-City teams, and another on the hon- orable mention list. The Bearkats' all-senior starting unit was composed of 6-6 Cecil Upshaw, 6-5 Max Nix, 6-4 Tommy Rachel, 6-3 Dennis Kile, and 6-2 Donnie Lewis. Upshaw and Kile were All-City first-teamers, Rachel and Nix made the sec- ond team and Lewis headed the honorable mention list. With this tremendous height, the 'Kats gen- erally outrebounded their opposition by whopping margins. They were a sharp-shoot- ing bunch, too, and as a team connected on almost 42 per cent of their shots from the floor. Upshaw had collected 662 points in AO games prior to the playoffs, an average of l6.6 per game. Lewis, the forgotten man, was a fine all-around performer who re- peatedly broke loose for easy layup shots that demoralized the foe. Rachel, cat-quick and versatile for his size, was the finest de- fensive performer in the city. Kenneth Young, also a senior, was a valuable sixth man. Donnie Lewis eyes goal for another basket. Bossier's baseball team paced by All-State Cecil Upshaw and All-District Clifford Rowe had an above average season finishing fourth in a rugged l-AAA race. The baseball team ended the season strong by defeating powerful and undefeated Spearsville, Louisiana, by 7-O score to take the Dubach High School tournament. Cecil Upshaw, who hurled for the most part of the season, alternated the pitching chores with Durwood Wilson and David Colvin. Clifford Rowe, Robert Clifton, Kenneth Young, and Cecil Upshaw lead the team in batting with Upshaw ahead with a .323 mark. Bossier's 1960 team should be another strong team with returning lettermen Kenneth Young, Robert Clifton, Cecil Upshaw and Frank Campisi.
