Through the years we have spent at B.M.I., we have come to know Mr. Husker not only as teacher and coach, but also as counselor and friend. His skill as an instructor has enabled us to do well in our advanced courses. Often, when in need of advice, we have gone to him and always found him ready with friendly and helpful wisdom. Beside his constant concern with school activities and sports, Mr. Husker is also secretary of the Alumni Association and editor of the Alumni Bulletin, both of which are rather thankless jobs, yet he has taken them on because of his willingness to help out where needed. For these reasons and many, many more, we are happy to dedicate to Mr. Husker this book. With this dedication go the heartfelt and sincere wishes of the Class of 1954 for all the good things that life can bring. We all feel that we have benefited much from our contacts with you. We shall never be able to express our deep feeling of gratitude, not only for your excellent guidance in the classroom, but also for your sincere counsel, because it is far beyond what can ever be written, As we leave these halls of B.M.I., our memories of you will constantly be with us. Dean Srhith has been working very hard with the academic schedules, It is through these efforts that many Seniors are able to gain entrance to the leading colleges of the country. Dean Smiths work is not done when classes are over, but instead it extends far into vacations, including the summer. This past summer the Dean spent in pre- paring for the coming year, He finally took a short vacation in late September. Mr. Lucas has his hands full with the many roblems of the Cadets. An endless line of weekend passes confront him every week, as well as looking after the manage- ment of the school. His work, like that of Dean Smith's, is never really done. Many problems are unsolved at this time but as Mr. Lucas has often said, They will be solved in due time. The administration is a small light which burns deeply in the hearts of the Seniors of 54. We want to thank them for all they have done for us. SENICR CLASS We, the Senior Class of 1954, will never forget B, M. I., our old Alma Mater. It has played an invaluable part in our education which will serve as an important step to our future goal. XX'e will remember not only the lessons learned in the class- room under our instructors but the lasting friend- ships formed and the many intangibles which will prove, as time moves on, a great benefit to us. The many extra-curricular activities: the Glee Clubg Y.M.C,A.g Landon Ritlesg the school paper, the Sl-:irmisherg and this our Yearbook, will inevit- ably give us a better foundation for our future ambitions. William Dent, Nicholas Krawciw, Harold Wells, and others have set the pace in the academic Held. Anthony Carabelli, Richard Cleary, Gene Studioso, Saul Bendayan, Ron Hibbert, and many others have held honors in athletics. In the Military Department we have had the opportunity of being selected for the higher corps oihcers: the Battalion Commander, Carabelli, the Company Commanders, Krawciw A Company, DeLaurentis B Company, Cleary C Company, and last but not least Band Harvey, C. We all have had many unforgettable experiences, a few of which were disappointments, but the great majority happy and valuable, We will not forget the encouragement B.M.I. has given us to do our best. So, as we graduate and break our class family into its independent members, we thank B. M. I. for what it has done for us. We are proud to have served you.-The B.M.I. Corps. CLASS CF 1955 This year's junior Class is one of the very best, having several leaders in scholastics, military and sports. Many of the cadets have been active in the school activities since they were Freshmen and now, what they have learned in the past few years is beginning to pay off. Scholastically, Cadets Applebaum, Giordano and Markel are leading. Although this is Applebaum's first year, he is already showing that he is capable of doing very good work, On the other hand, Giordano and Markel have been the leaders right along. Several others are finding their studies a little rougher than these Cadets but they are climbing nearer to the top as time progresses. From a military standpoint, Markel, Skidmore, Giordano, Mann, Spivack and Rickett are the higher ranking non-roms. Others have moved into positions where, if they keep up the good work, they will have a chance to become officers next year. In the line of sports, we find that Shevillo, Skid- more, Bennett, Giordano, Amerman and Rickett are the leading members. In football, we nnd Amerman, Shevillo, Skidmore and Rickett on the varsity squad while several others played on the junior varsity squad. Shcvillo and Skidmore also were members of the basketball squads, along with Schenck and Rickett. In track, Gordon, Giove, Spivack and Staley are the future prospects while Giordano and Huhn are the main hopes of next year's wrestling team. To a fine looking prospective Senior Class, the Class of '54 leave their good wishes for a terrihc Senior year. IK 48 .1 35 Trip Rout Baxter, johnson, Scholes, Sottos, Berry, Audino, Slatoff, Knorr. CLASS OF 1956 This year, the Sophomore Class has certainly shown that it contains cadets who are aiming for positions of high standing in the cadet corps and even beyond that. Leading in scholastics are Wernitznig, Slatoff and Mcllwain. These cadets are usually found near the top of the Dean's List and hardly c-ver miss the uppies list. Although these cadets are the leaders, there is an ever present form of competition because several other members of the Sophomore Class are close behind. Looking at the class from a military viewpoint, we nnd Mcllwain, Slatoff and Pingatore leading the ranks. The class as a whole has done a fine job along military lines and many are potential non-roms and officers. Mcllwain, Pingatore, Slatoff, Scholes, Goldberg and Sottos are the leaders on the athletic end of it. Mcllwain and Sottos have seen action on both the varsity football and varsity basketball squads while Slatoff played varsity football. Many others have participated in one sport or another and with these cadets as potential varsity 'players, the outlook for having good teams in the future is very good. To the Sophomore Class, the Class of '54 extends its congratulations and wishes it the best of lutk in the years to come. U7 CLASS CF 1957 This year, the Freshman Class has already begun to show that it has very good possibilities for the future. A few cadets in the Freshman Class have moved up from the junior School and it is quite natural to see these cadets stand out above the others. In the scholastic end of the class, we hnd that Benz, Nagy and Hardin are doing very well. Even though these cadets stand out, there are many others who have been working hard and are beginning to move up in their class standing. Cadets Benz, Candelori, Hardin and Nagy appear to be the leaders in the military department. Having been in the junior School last year, these cadets are putting to good use the instruction which they re- ceived in D Company. Usually, most of the mem- bers of the Freshman Class are new cadets and, therefore, End it somewhat difficult to accustom themselves to the military life but this year's group has done a very good job in overcoming this problem. Naturally, it isn't expected to see Freshmen on varsity sports squads but several have participated on either junior varsity or junior teams. Among the leaders are Barrett, Benz, Canderlori, Nagy, and Peppler, along with many others. In all, the Freshman Class looks to be off to a verv good start in the various school activities, as well as in scholastics. The Senior Class of '54 wishes the Class of '57 the best of luck in the years to come. Tap Rau: Henderson, Osborne, Swinehart. Bray, Morgen. Colscott, Smith, Hardin, Sykes. Second Rout Barrett. JUNIOR SCHOCJL The junior School at B.M.I, is made up of Cadets in the hfth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. There are sixteen boys in the eighth grade this year, and they are all looking forward to their promotion from the junior School and D Company to the Upper School and the R.O.T.C. Scholastically they are a separate school but in military formations they form a very important unit. Every day they have drill under the supervision of Sergeant First Class Gunn. Although the Cadets in D Company use wooden rifles instead of the MI's which are used by the Upper School, it does not prevent them from doing the manual of arms just as well as the Upper School Cadets. Many activities are opened to the Cadets of the junior School. There is a seasonal play period, under the direction of Mr, Wfood, as well as midget football, basketball, track and baseball teams. Sev- eral times during the year special Junior School films are shown. These films are educational as well as interesting and relaxing, Another big occasion of the year is the junior School Christmas party, which is always a big hit among the boys. The Sharpshootern is the edition of the Skirm- isher which serves as a yearbook for the graduates of the eighth grade. This book is produced by the graduates themselves with the help of faculty advisers. To the members of the junior School, we, the Class of '54, wish the best of luck in the years to come at B.M.I. and following your graduation as Seniors. Top Razr: Paul. Witte, Johnson. They are: Cadets Actrich, Gaskill, Katcharian, Kraemer, Lear, Meszarros, Nav- arra. Orenberg, Paul, A, Pingatore, Rosenthal, Samu, Tindall, Vaccaro, Waterbury' and Yohrling. Waterbtiry' and Lear are the leaders scholastically. Both have had very high scholastic averages through- out the year, being very high on the top ten of the junior School. With the excellent instruction which these Cadets have had, it shouldn't be too difhcult for them to make good as members of the Fresh- man Class next year. Cadet Lieutenant Kenn Paul is the company com- mander of D Company this year and, with the help of his platoon leaders. Cadets Lear and Vaccaro. he has developed a fine looking company consisting completely of junior School Cadets. Several of the boys of the junior School partici- pated in organized athletics. It appears evident that these boys realize that to become a winner in athletics, now is the time to start, From the turn-out of junior School Cadets, it looks as though several are slated to be the stars of tomotrow's varsity teams. As we leave the junior School to enter the Upper School, we wish to tell last year's eighth grade that we have tried to carry on with their good work and to next year's eighth grade, who will soon become the leaders of the junior School, we wish the best of luck and success. It is the duty of the ofhcers to maintain discipline and keep a high sense of morale. From the Lieutenant Colonel down to the lowest ranking Lieutenant can he seen the high spirit of morale that characterizes an officer, This year the officers with the help of the NCO's have been unusually successful in making the corps into a well-disciplined unit, After the first promotion late in the fall some 12 officers were commissioned and they are now occupying high positions in the Staff Com- panies and Band. NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS Every organization that is to be run efficiently has to have middlemen and, in the case of our Battalion here at B.M.I., the non-coms are the middlemen. It is the non-coms' responsibility to assist their superior officers in carrying the responsibilities of the units. In doing this, they gain experience in leadership by executing the orders of their superiors and by giving instruction to the smaller units of the Corps. Ranging in grade from Sergeant to Master Ser- geant, the non-coms of the Corps represent a fair sized group. It is from this group that the officers of next year's Corps will be taken, As always, the non-coms have been doing a swell job on the whole and the competition for the higher ranking positions is very keen. With these men taking a major part in the running of the Corps, it has been very successful. We of the Corps want to thank the non-coms on the fine job which they have done and wish them the best of success in building an outstanding Battalion next year. 4 A v W 4 vi Y? 1' QQ vi? ul-N s 3+ .41 tes V? Second in command on the staff is the Adjutant, Cadet Lieutenant Edward Garton, Between these two cadets lies the problem of not only running the Battalion but also of seeing that the other members on the staff do their job. Every successful unit needs a Supply Olhcer and it is on the staff that we find Lieutenant Erwin Apell, assisted by Sergeants Byer and Willis. Cadet Master Sergeant Edel is the Assistant Adju- tant and Cadet Lieutenant john Uribe is the Upper School officer in charge of D Company. With the excellent job which the staff has been doing this year's Corps of Cadets has been very successful, in not only meeting the military requirements but in helping maintain high morale throughout the Battalion. . a' 'g'1vE r . . 'f liwgvf, . . ,A UI' On Monday, September 21st, 1954, the first attempt at organizing B Company was made, At first the tompany looked pretty poor but, after a few weeks of drill, it betame quite evident that this unit was made up ot' men that Could and would put out toward making the company one of the best. After making several changes in the commanding posi- tions of the company, its final makeup had Cadet Captain Robert DeLaurentis as Company Commander with Cadet First Lieutenant W'illiam Dent as the lst Platoon Leader and Cadet First Lieutenant Wfilliani Parker as the 2nd Platoon Leader. Through the combined efforts of these oflicers, as- sisted by Sergeants Noll, Markel, Leone and Rudolph, B Company was developed into a very sharp looking outfit, Although the Company failed to win the Best Company banner at the Washington's Birthday exercises, it has proved time and time again that it is the main contender for the honor and, that when unit competition comes up again on Alumni Day, there will possibly be a change in the honor of being the best Company. The officers of B Company want to thank the members of the Company for helping to make B Company what it is and to wish them the best of luek in the years to tome, Company! Attention! Pass in Review. And once again C Company takes the held to perform in a superlative manner. The precision of their movements was viewed by all with admiration, in the Washington's Birthday drill com- petition, as C Company was given the honor of being the battalion's best Companyu for top performance in drill. This year, C Company was commanded by Cadet First Lieutenant Richard Clearyg upon his graduation last March, Cadet First Lieutenant Gaston Bermudez took over the Company. Through the years C Company has been accorded the dubious honor of receiving the newest and smallest cadets in the battalion. This has been a challenge to the officers in charge, but the good will of the men and the supervision of the fellow officers, made the Company reach perfection. Good luck to the men of this Company and keep up the good work. fr Company Commander, First Lieutenant Clearyg First Platoon Leader, Second Lieutenant Studiosog Second Platoon Leader, First Lieutenant Bermudezg Guidon Bearer, Private First Class Ochoa. SWCRD AND SABRE In April 1953, Cadet Captain Robert DeL.1urentis took on the task of Editor-in'Chief of the year- book. From that time until the end of the school year, he has put in long and hard hours of work in trying to get the book out on time. Assisting was the Associate Editor, Cadet Lieutenant Edward Garton. Much credit is due to Cadet Thomas Leone for the excellent 'job which he did as the Business Manager, It has been a good many years since the money end of the yearbook was settled as far in , advance as it was this year. Meanwhile, Cadet Lieu- tenant William Parker was doing an outstanding job as the journalistic Editor. Not to be forgotten is the Photographic Editor, Cadet Lieutenant Clayton Har- vey, who did a bang-up job in securing the neces- sary pictures for the yearbook. After all, where would a yearbook be without pictures? Last but far from least is the Sports Editor, Cadet Harold Wells. whose job it was to see that all of the yearly sports were written up and a record of the teams season recorded. The Board wishes to thank Cadet Corporal Nicholas, a junior, for his work as Art Editor. We, the Editors of the Sword and Sabre, want to thank our advisors for their much needed assistance in making this 1954 Sword and Sabre the finest to date. We also want to thank our staff members for their co-operation and the fine job they did in helping us to make this book .1 success. 1 FFA 5' -vw gy 5 V sa I 5 wr, fees, Tpf' .. There is also a juke- box Containing most of the popular records which is kept going most of the time. Alternating at the for- ward positions were 'lim Mcllwain and Dick Smith, In the center position it was either Larry Lee or Nick Sottos. The reserves were Gene Studioso, Walt Swayze. Tony Carabelli and Ken Rickett. The cadets opened their season with a loss to a strong Penn Military Prep team but bounced back to win against Trenton jewish Community Center and our chiet' rival Admiral Farragut, They dropped the next three and then defeated Croydon Hall Academy, W'e lost the remaining games. However, several of these, especially the Washington's birthday game with Temple H. S. and the last game of the season with Bryn Athyn, were very closeg the former 58 to 65 and the latter 66 to 67, The team played hard and with good spirit through- out every gameg much credit goes to the coaches and the team for a fine job.
