Text from Pages 1 - 148 of the 1984 volume:

To the students of Borden High School, the Borden Institute was a landmark which found a place in our ttschool-day,i environment. We grew to learn and accept the fact that it was tioff-limits to us. As for many other people of Borden, the nearly lOO-year-old former college served a purpose in their lives. In 1884, the Borden Institute was built by William Borden as a liberal arts college. Since then, the building has endured many years and several changes. One change the students can ap- preciate as part of their high schools history is the conversion of the Borden Institute into Borden High School. Also, in 1973, the Borden Institute was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior in cooperation with the Indiana Department of National Resources. Several reasons brought about the demolition of the Borden In- stitute. One reason was the unsuc- cessful attempt in securing money for the buildings preservation. The Historical Society was form- ed to try and save the building, but did not succeed in their many efforts. Herman Miller, superintendent of West Clark Community Schools, said the building presented a safety hazard to students who might have been playing near the building. The life of the Borden Institute was one year short of being 100 years old. The memory of the Borden Institute shall live on although the building no longer exists. r! a I. 12. 74c am 7am Waazm 30W, 7nde'aaa 4 W 1133 so .... .. 2. 2.. 5.... .... .. ...2..2.. 2.2.... .. . -. 2 .2 - .2.- 22. -.-.2.- -.. . .a . 2 2. 2.2.2.2. . .: 2... 2 2 .. 2. ,9:- ,lno HES! This years Girls Basketball Team posted the best season record ever; 2-2. The Team managed to go as far in State Tournament play as any other team weive had-to the Finals of the Regional. While meeting several of the Teams goals, we managed to accomplish a few Firsts. The win over Floyd Cen- tral was especially gratifying because we had never beaten them before. We had lost to Cor- ydon twice last year; during regular season play and by one point again in the first round of the Regional and we defeated them this year. Last year we were defeated by Salem in the Holiday Invitational Tournament and we made a good correction with that competition this year by defeating them three times: for the Championship of the 1983 Holiday Invitational Tournament, in regular season play, and for the Championship of the IHSAA Silver Creek Sectional. Our most difficult lack of success was with our Conference rival, Austin. We finished in Second place in the conference standing with only one loss-Austin-which was our only loss in regular season play. The end of our basketball season came with the loss to Austin in the finals of the Regional at New Albany which gave us our second loss on our record. While there is little consolation in losing, there can be some comfort in knowing the loss was to a team ranked in the top ten in the state. Losing three Seniors; Donna Graf, Nancy Graf, and Kim Schleicher, will create a serious gap for the retur- ning players to fill. Kim, this years MVP and leading scorer, Donna, our point guard with tremendous outside shooting ability, and Nancy, with her strong defensive ability, gave us the kind of team balance that few teams could match. Kim Schleicher uses good form in shooting free throws. The 1983-84 Borden Braves boys basketball team compiled a record of thirteen wins and nine losses. This winning record was accomplished in spite of the fact that this was the toughest schedule ever played by the Braves. The strengths of the team were: tough defense, balanced scoring, good rebounding, and good free throw shooting. The weakness was once again the lack of size. The victory over Graceland by two points in the sectional ranks as one of the best played games in Borden History. This victory came one week after the Braves had lost by twenty- eight points to the Warriors. Other victories, were over Salem, Austin, Crothersville, Henryville twice, South Central, Ninth 8; 0, New Washington, Clarksville, Lanesville, and Medora, twice. This team for their size achieved vv' as much as any Borden Team. T This page is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance 71 The Cheerleaders enjoyed the successful season almost as much as the guys. The fall of 1981, Cary's sophomore year, yielded him seven wins-four losses while playing part of the season number one singles and the rest number two singles. With the start of his junior year, Cary played ex- clusively number one singles and established an impressive four- teen wins-three losses record for that season. Caryts senior year brought him success that was to make him one of the most outstan- ding tennis players of Southern Indiana. He established an in- credible twenty wins-one loss record tall number one singlesx He was conference number one singles champion, All Conference, undefeated in regular season competition, MVP at Borden for the second year, and advanced to the finals of the IHSAA number one singles tournament, Regional Competition at North Central High School in Indianapolis-this was his only defeat of the season.
