Meet a Runner-Lesiie Stark. mews m W Sophomore Leslie Stark has a T-shirt that says Itl'd Rather ' ' Be Running, and that is exactly what she does best. Leslie has become Borden's resident expert at middle distance races. Her successes are worthy of special recognition. Leslie's running career began in the spring of 1982 when as a freshman trackster she set school records in the 1600 and 800 m. runs. She qualified for the sectional in the 1600 where she placed fourth and the regional where she placed eleventh, each time breaking her own school record. During the summer Leslie began Amateur Athletic Union competition where competitors are grouped in age brackets. In the AAU Junior Olympics Sectional she had a clean sweep, winning the 400, 800, and 1500 m. runs. In the Indiana AAU Finals, Leslie won the 800 and ran third in the 1500 and sixth in the 400. Capturing the 800 advanced her to the seven- state Region VI Finals where again Leslie won the 800. Mem- phis, Tennessee and the National AAU Junior Olympics were next for Leslie. In her first-ever national competition Leslie survived the trials and placed seventh in the finals with a time of 2:22. When school started this year, Leslie joined the boys' cross country team to build stamina and continue her running. She became the first girl at Borden to win a varsity letter in boys competition. In the meantime she began competing in AAU 5000 m. runs. She placed first in the sectional and state levels. A fourth place finish in Region VI earned her another trip to the AAU Nationals in Kansas City, Kansas where she finished fifty-second among all competitors. In the spring Leslie was back with the girls' track team and again setting records in the 400, 800 and 1600. She won all three events in record-setting times at the SAC Conference Track Meet and was named AII-Conference. Qualifying for the sectional in all three events, Leslie placed second in the 1600 with a school record time of 5:22, fourth in the 800, and fifth in the 400. Competing in the regional in the 1600, she ran second with another record time of 5:15. Leslie had reached her goal-the state finals in IHSAA competition. As the youngest Borden girl to reach the state finals, Leslie will have two more years for a return trip. Good Luck Leslie! 77 78 Cross Country Team Has No Seniors. Gary Smith ran fifth while Leslie Stark, the first girl at Borden High School to win a major Ietter in boys' com- petition, was the sixth runner. Leslie competed in the girls cross country sectional where her 9th place finish with a time of 12:17 qualified her for the regional. In spite of a disappoin- ting sixth place finish in the Southern Athletic Conference, during the season the team finished ahead of Clarksville three times, and West Washington, New Albany, and New Washington twice. Having lost 5 of the previous year's starters, the Braves were very inexperienced and a winning season was not expected. However, the girls hard work, dedication, and positive attitude greatly contributed to their record-breaking season. After dropping the first match of the season to Clarksville, the girls won 5 consecutive matches over Medora, Graceland, Henryville, Eastern and Silver Creek. The follow- ing four games were the toughest part of the season with a win at West Washington and losses to North Harrison, New Washington and Floyd Central. The girls finished the season with six straight wins in- cluding a victory over Austin which was the first for a BHS varsity volleyball team. In the Southern Athletic Conference, the Braves posted a 6-1 record for a 2nd-place finish, the highest ever for a BHS volleyball team. Senior Jana Rickard and sophomore Pam Nolot were named to the SAC All-Conference team. Jana was also chosen Bordenis Most Valuable Player at seasonfs end. JUNIOR VARSITY: The JV volleyball team also established a new school record with 14 victories against only 1 defeat. The JV squad won the first 13 matches against Clarksville, Medora, Graceland, Henryviiie, Eastern, Silver Creek, North Harrison, New Washington, West Washington, Floyd Central, South Central, Medora, Salem, and Austin. 'r E v VARSITY: The 1982-83 year was what the coaches call a year of transition. A transition from a losing record to what is hoped to be a winning record next year. The team worked very hard through some very difficult circumstances. The Braves played their best basketball of the season down the stretch when they beat Eastern, West Washington, and Graceland. Perhaps their best game of the year came during the sectional. After a slow first quarter start against Floyd Central, the Braves were out-played by only three points in the remainder of the game. The Braves outrebounded the taller F. C. team tonly the second team all season to do soi and showed the fans a great effort against a team which eventually reached the Sweet Sixteen. Statistically, the team led their opponents in the following categories: free throw percentage t67.3Voi, rebounds per game t29.3i, steals t96i, and points per game t61i. Individually, senior Jim Beam received the Free Throw Award t76.8Voi and led in scoring t14.9 ppgi and rebounding t5.9 rpgi. Second to Jim in these categories was sophomore Jerry Kirchgessnert11.2 ppg and 5.1 rpgi. Jim received the Defense Award and Jerry the Hus- tle Award which shows that they did more than just score. Junior Chris Gray totaled first in assists t88i and steals i22i. During the season junior Brian White was named WXVWis Player of the Game in the win over Clarksville. VARSITY: The 1982-83 varsity girls' basketball team finished the season with 17 wins and 5 losses, placed second out of eight in the Southern Athletic Conference, and won the Silver Creek Sectional Championship for the fifth time. These achievements were a continuation of the winning tradition which has been established by the girls' basketball program in its eighth year of existence. Defense was a key element to this year's team. A normally strong defensive team, Borden was even stronger this year. During the season Borden girls outscored their opponents by an average of 20 points. In the last 9 out of 10 games the opponents scoring average was held under 19 points. Responsible for much of this was defensive leader, Jana Rickard, one of only two seniors on the squad. Defense is a team effort, but Jana was an influen- tial factor to the rest of the girls. Her defensive prowess earn- ed her the Defense Award at seasonis end. The other senior was Rita Kirchgessner. While switching to a new role on the perimeter which would utilize her ballhandling capabilities, Rita provided the kind of senior leadership necessary for a good team. Rita, who received the team's Sportsmanship Award, was named SAC All-Conference along with junior teammates, Donna Graf and Kim Schleicher. This was a balanced team with everyone contributing. Donna Graf led the team in assists MD and free throw accuracy t60.3lVol, while sophomore Pam Nolot had the most rebounds t220t. Kim Schleicher was named Most Valuable Player, not because she led in any one category, but because she shared the load in all categories while performing very consistently. Kim averaged 12.5 points per game, shot 5004 from the field and 600A, from the charity stripe, had 29 assists and 122 re- bounds. Every starter and every reserve contributed throughout the season to the success of this years team. With the graduation of Rita and Jana will come the challenge to the younger girls to fill the void and keep up the hard work and dedication which yields success. JUNIOR VARSITY: t15-1l: The J.V.'s won the SAC and suf- fered only one defeat at the hands of Corydon, a loss they later avenged.
