The 1981 cross country team placed sixth out of a seven team field in the Southern Athletic Conference meet. The num- ber one finisher for the Braves was senior Rusty Franklin, who finished in eighth place with a time of 18:59. Rusty finished first for the team in every run and was named Most Valuable Runner for the second consecutive year. In sectional competition, Bor. den placed eleventh by defeating SaIem, Lanesville, Silver Creek, and Clarksville. They continued to improve throughout the season and won their last three matches to post a winning record. in Southern Athletic Conference action, the Braves finished in 4th place with a 4-3 record. In sectional play, the girls defeated Madison Shawe in their first game to become the first BHS Volleyball team to win 10 games in one season. Unfortunately, the Braves couldnit keep this momentum going. With players lack- ing varsity experience, the Braves were plagued by a iione-bad- quarter syndrome. The most heartbreaking loss came at the hands of Henryville when the Braves lost by two points in four overtimes! The team placed seventh in the eight team, South- ern Athletic Conference. Statistically the Braves shooting per- centage of 41.17, was slightly higher than their opponents at 39.596, however, the Braves were out rebounded and commit- ted more turnovers than their opponents. Individually, senior Mac McKinley set a new school record for field goal accuracy 157.4701 and led the team in rebounding U 191. Junior Jim Beam was the team's leading scorer with 12.5 points per game and was second at the charity stripe181.37o1. VARSITY: The girls' basketball program at BHS remained strong again in 1981-82. The team regained their Silver Creek Sectional Championship and posted an 18-4 record. Two early season losses to North Harrison and Floyd Central were dishear- tening because the girls had been in control of both games but lost them at the very end. North Harrison scored on a rebound basket off a missed free throw with five seconds remaining, and F. C. had to overcome a twelve point deficit to win. Borden snapped back immediately, however, to capture the Washing- ton County Tourney. Sophomore Donna Graf was named MVP. Joining her on the AIl-Tourney team were seniors Elaine Book and Cheryl Pearl. Borden lost the annual battle for the SAC crown to Austin, an eventual Semi-State contender. Donna Graf and Cheryl Pearl were named to the All-Conference team. Drawing the most difficult route, the girls played with determination and defeated Charles- town, Silver Creek and Salem to capture their fourth IHSAA Sectional title in five years. Statistically as a team, Borden led in every department and averaged 53.8 points per game to their opponents 32.5 points. Leading scorer was Donna Graf 00.6 points per gamei. Cheryl Pearl was the leading rebounder 18.2 per game, while senior Sherry Cavins had the most assists and the most steals. JUNIOR VARSITY: With nine freshmen and two sophomores the J.V. squad did a creditable job in posting a 6-8 record. Mo.......-tu.m VARSITY: The 1982 baseball team consisted of three seniors a tJim Jaocbs, Mike Ooley, and John Trainorx five juniors, two sophomores and seven freshmen. The Braves finished the season at 6-14. With only 3 seniors, the team members are en- l couraged about the future. Most of the pitching was done by ' sophomores, Gary Ooley and Chris Gray, whose records were 4-4 and 2-7 respectively. In sectional play the Braves faced New Washington, a team with whom the Braves split in regular season. The game lasted 23 hours and 15 minutes including a 20 hours and 50 minutes rain delay. Ultimately the Braves lost 10-3. During the season, the leading hitter was Chris Gray at .311. The Most Valuable Player was Jim Jacobs who did the majority of the catching and led the team in RBl's and home runs. The school records were all set by seniors so there is a great challenge to the retur- ning team members to maintain the levellof excellence. New records are as follows: Todd Boling, Mac McKinley, Chris Stumler, Travis Martin: 400 m. Relay, 0247.3 Chris Stumler, Travis Martin, John Trainor, Mac McKinley: 1600 m. Relay, 3:37 Chris Stumler: 400 m. Dash, 0:52 Mac McKinley: 110 m. High Hurdles, 0:15.65 The 1600 meter relay team went undefeated for the season and compiled a two-year record of 27-3. Chris, Travis, John, and Mac were named SAC All-Conference and qualified for the sectional where they placed fifth. Other sectional qualifiers and their placements were Chris Stumler, sixth in the 400 m. run; Rusty Franklin, ninth in the 1600 m. run; Mac McKinley, seventh in the 100 m. high hurdles. Mac also qualified in the pole vault, an event in which he was undefeated this year and was beaten only twice in two seasons. These performances earned BHS a team finish of 17th of 24. Mac McKiney was named overall Most Valuable Trackman and earned SAC All- Conference honors in three events. These seniors were part of one of the best track teams in BHS history. The future looks bright as only one senior was among the record holders which are as follows: Sophomore Donna Graf: Discus, 88'; Junior Jana Rickard: Long Jump, 15'11 and 100m. Low Hurdles, 0216.8; Freshman Les1ie Stark; 1600 m. Run, 5:43 and 800m Run, 2:36; Jana Rickard, Freshman Michelle Green, Senior Cheryl PearI, Leslie Stark: 1600m Relay, 4229.4. Overall the Most Valuable Track Girl was Jana Rickard who was also SAC AIl-Conference. Sectional qualifiers were Jana Rickard in the long jump and the low hurdles and Leslie Stark in the 1600 meter run. Jana placed sixth in the low hurdles equalling her record time. Leslie placed fourth, cut a second off her record time and qualified for the regional. These performances gave Borden a fourteenth place finish out of 24 teams.
