In the first year for Varsity Tennis the interest and enthusiasm shown was exceptionally high. While the boys team record was 0-6, they did have some individ- ual victories and had close team matches against Floyd Central and New Washington, both 3-2 losses. The girls fared somewhat better gaining 2 team victories against 6 losses. Both teams did quite well for their first year in competition. Since there were no seniors on either team, the future should be marked with continued im- provement. m W Wt We'll WIAPA m... In spite of a 4-11 won-lost record, however, the girls had many close games. Only four defeats were by more than two or three points, and in three games the time expired with Borden, unfortunately, behind in the score. Senior Laura Popp was named Most Valuable Player, and senior Linda Meunier was named to the SAC All-Conference Team. Other Varsity players lost to graduation are Stacy Gray, J anice Martin, Lisa Por- ter, and Julie Rickard, and scorekeeper Kelly Sumner. VARSITY SEASON: tRecord 5-15i: In spite of a losing record, the 1980-81 Braves were very competitive. The average losing margin was only five points. In every game the Braves had a height disadvantage, but the players compensated with their quickness and their desire. The season-opening victory over Pekin Eastern showed the skeptical fans that the Braves would give a total team effort throughout the season. Senior leadership was also apparent. Troy Cook tpictured at . the lefti was named Most Valuable Player. Dexter Wilson, who was ; named an SAC All-Conference player, set a school career record for I assists. Other seniors who contributed greatly were Bart Drescher, Greg Lamb, and Eric Smith. After an opening 26 point loss to Eastern and a first-half season record of 4-6, the young Braves went on to win every remaining game and post a fine 14-6 record. In accomplishing this record the team had faced adversity and regrouped every time. Freshman Chris Gray was out twice during the season with a broken wrist once and another time with pneumonia. In the second half of the season, the J .V. squad lost their leading scorer when sophomore Jim Beam moved up to the Varsity. In spite of this, the team kept winning. Freshman Cary Ooley led the team in scoring with an 8.8 point average and in free throw shooting with 73?;3. Leading rebounder with 88 total rebounds was fresh- man Tim Haas followed by freshman Brian White and Chris Gray with 5.2 rebounds per game. The hustle and guard play of junior Travis Martin was also an impor- tant factor in the teams success. EIGHTH GRADE: tRecord 8-10i While compiling a season record of 8-10, the eighth grade team was run- ner-up in the Washington-County Tourney. Season high points included wins over Charlestown, Salem, Henryville, New Washington and Eastern. A strong 53- 36 win over Eastern in the Washington County Tour- ney showed great improvement by the young Braves. SEVENTH GRADE: tRecord 0-17i The 1980-81 sea- son was very disappointing for the seventh graders. They started the season with high expectations, but their lack of experience took its toll. With only seven team members the boys each gave a maximum effort, practiced hard, and showed much improvement as the year progressed. Perhaps not quite as good as the last two season records but still, by any measure, very successful. The team won the Washing- ton County Invitational Tourney by defeating Salem in the first round with a last second shot by senior Gloria Cavins and then defeating West Washington by 16 points in the championship game. With two conference losses Borden placed third in the Southern Athletic Conference. One of these losses was to Austin, the even- tual conference champion. The Varsity will lose to graduation the following starters: center Julie Rickard, forward Gloria Cavins, and guard Linda Meunier. Also graduating are relief forwards Stacy Gray and Laura Popp, and guard Joy Koerber. The two returning start- ers, junior guard Elaine Book and junior forward Cheryl Pearl, were named to the SAC All-Conference team. JUNIOR VARSITY: tRecord 9-D With five fresh- men, two sophomores, and two juniors the J .V.,s posted an excellent 9-1 record. Their only loss was a three 1- point loss to Floyd Central. Leading scorer UQW and rebounder 00.D was freshman Kim Schleicher. Fresh- : man Donna Graf led in assists while sophomore Jana Rickard served capably as the floor general.
