Borden High School Borden , Indiana Appreciation The members of the yearbook staff have come to a decision this year that they would not have a dedica- tion each year, but only when they feel it is very special. However they would like to say a very special thank-you to Miss Brenda Nicholson. She is someone $ who has helped each one of us to struggle through things that seem to bother us and she is always there if we need someone to lend an ear. With our deepest admiration, gratitude, and appreciation, we again say thank-you to Miss Nicholson. At Awards Day the yearbook editors, Kelly Sumner and Gina Jack- son give flowers and hugs to Miss Nicholson. Mr. And Miss BHS Brian Robertson And Gena Porter Mr. and Miss BHS are nominat- ed by the faculty and selected by the student body. Brian Robert- son and Gena Porter are excellent choices for this honor. Athletically, they have brought honors not only to themselves, but also to the school. They each hold individual records and have been named to All-Conference teams. Brian participated in track during his sophomore year and basketball for four years where he led the team in almost every sta- tistic. Also a statistical leader, Gena has lettered three years in volleyball and four years in track and basketball. She has the dis- tinction of being the first Borden athlete to qualify for the State Fin- als in track. Brian and Gena have been aca- demic leaders also. Both are two year members of the National Honor Society and have served three years each in the Student Council, either as representatives or as officers of their class. As ju- niors they were delegates to Hoo- sier Boys' and Girls' State. In the classroom, on the playing floor, and in all phases of life, Brian and Gena have set high standards for all students to follow. The band placed in the following com- petitions: first in Charlestown, Indiana; in Kentucky: second, Grayson County; second, Shelby County; third, LaRue County; first in parade and second in field show, Thomas Jefferson High School. Despite a losing season, the varsity volleyball team defeated their rivals Silver Creek and Henryville to claim the unofficial title of West Clark Champs. In the sectional the girls defeated Silver Creek again to reach the semi-finals where they lost to powerhouse Scottsburg. Statistics for the season show that the girls put forth a tremendous effort. For example, in the first game against Pekin Eastern, the clock expired, which is a rarity, and the play included a triple block. In the North Harrison and West Washington matches only two serves were missed and seven girls served 1000A in both matches. Individual leader for the sea- son was Most Valuable Player, Senior Gena Porter . who had the least errors on hits and the highest per- centage of serves, sets, bumps, and spikes. Gena was named to the SAC AIl-Conference team by confer- ence coaches. Other seniors were Julia Farmer, whose powerhouse serves intimidated opponents and yield- ed the most points i52i scored on serves; Monica Hurst, who worked hard to become a strong spiker; Jeri Martin and Barbara Book, who always came ready to play hard. Providing the nucleus for an exper- ienced team next year will be Laura Popp, this year's outstanding server with 72 of 74 successful serves; Linda Meunier; Julie Rickard; Lisa Porter; Stacy Gray; Janice Martin; and Kathy Baxter. Above average ability, super dedication, and a great desire to win marked the 1979 Braves as a potentially tough team. Then injuries began to take their toll when number one runner, Sophomore Mac McKin- ley, was forced out because of a hip injury. Senior Tony Missi moved into the top spot for the Braves until a sprained ankle sidelined him. Mac finished the season as number four runner while Tony was number five. By the time of these injuries, Senior Steve Klein tlast season's MVRy had recovered from mono. Steve led the Braves for the rest of the season to finish as top runner. Steve's dedication and leadership, again made him the Most Valuable Runner. Completing the team roster are the following runners: Number two runner, Most Valuable Sophomore, Rusty Franklin; Number three, Chris Stumler, who missed the Most Valuable Sophomore award by one point; Most Valuable Junior John Hagest, showing good consistency, dedication, . and improvement, became the number six runner; ; j Seventh, eighth, and ninth runners were Greg Lamb, 1 also hampered by a leg injury; Steve Marlman; and Todd Boling, who had his best performance in the conference meet where he finished as Borden's third runner. With the strength and desire displayed by the senior Tony Missi underclassmen, the prospect of a return to power for the Braves seems likely. 86 Senior Steve Klein 4 . J; . , . k . VARSITY: The Varsity had a very good year with a 14-4 record, the runner-up spot in the Southern Athletic Conference with a 6-1 mark, and their third Sectional Championship. The accom- plishments are even greater considering the knee injury to start- ing center, junior Julie Rickard, in the first game of the season. Julie did not return to line-up until the sectional. Moving up from the Junior Varsity was sophomore Cheryl Pearl who gained valuable experience at the center spot. Senior guard, Gena Porter, who averaged 42.4lVo shooting, led the team in point average l16.41, free throw shooting lGOlVoi, rebound average 0.31, and assists l621. Gena did all this while drawing the toughest defensive assignment, for which she earned the Defense Award, and committing only two fouls per game. She was named SAC All-Conference and her team's Most Valuable Player. Replacing a player of Gena's caliber will not be an easy task. Also lost through graduation wasDonna Koerber, who had a super attitude in both practice and game situations. Donna always gave a good effort and received the team's Sports- manship Award. As a team, the Varsity averaged 52 points while holding the opponents to 38.8. They had 43.4 rebounds and 10 assists per game. In post-season play for the third straight year, Borden faced Silver Creek in the sectional final and the outcome was the same. Borden beat the Creekers for their third Sectional Championship. Borden's defensive press stole the ball 17 times and forced 36 turnovers. Gena, who scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds, frustrated the attempts of the Silver Creek ballhandler to bring the ball up-court and came up with five steals. Julie Rickard, playing in only her second game of the season, helped with 10 points. All this might not have been possible had it not been for junior Linda Meunier whose 18 points contributed significantly to the Braves beating Charlestown in the first game. In Regional play against Paoli, the team entered the last quarter down by two points. They battled the bigger Paoli team with aggressiveness and determination but were unable to gain victo- ry. Win or lose, playing in the regional for three years in a row speaks well for our girls' basketball program. Top: Junior Linda Meunier. They had more assists and more rebounds while committing fewer errors and fewer fouls than their opponents. Top scorer was sophomore Elaine Book who averaged 7.7 points. The 19-1 record tied the mark set by the 1964-65 Porter-coached team, but according to coach Porter, this was the best team he'd ever coached. He felt this team's achievement was greater because of stronger competition, and the fact that they won the Washington County Holiday Tour- ney and a tough conference with a perfect 7-0 record. Quality of competition can be shown by two facts. First, the only loss in regular season was to Crawford County, a team which was defeated only once until reaching the finals of the Evansville Semi-State. Sec- ond, the SAC toughness came through when Henry- ville, Crothersville, and Lanesville, all SAC teams de- feated by Borden in regular season, played in their sectional finals. A feat BHS would no doubt have equaled had they not met Floyd Central in the first round. In spite of the draw, the sectional was eagerly await- ed by the Braves and their fans. Not even a broken finger on starting guard Steve Klein could I discourage the team or the fans. Borden sold its allottment of tickets and fans arrived in a bus caravan to support the Braves. Until the height and physicalness of FC took its toll, the Braves gave the larger school a real battle. Even Floyd Central coach Joe Hinton admitted, We felt for our lives. That's the smartest and best little basketball team we've ever played. The fact that the Braves had scored 75 points on his team, whose de- fensive average had been 57.1, probably had much to do with Hinton's assessment. 47-! Senior Bruce Koetter This page Sponsored by Farm Brueau Insurance, 945 Wall St., Jeffersonville Senior Brian Robertson impressed Hinton and the college scouts with a 30 point effort. tln Brian's last three regular games he had scored 30, 29, 29.i Ac- cording to Hinton, Brian Robertson is as pure a shooter as I've seen. I don't care if he's from a big school, medium school, little school, he's a great one. Coach Porter agrees. Brian is the greatest play- er I've ever coached. Brian's season attests to the fact that his sectional performance was no fluke. Individ- ually, he set a school record with 56.4070 field goal shooting, and his 80.4070 free throw accuracy included a record 25 in a row. In addition, he led the team in rebounds t10.4 per gamei, total points scored t421i, and scoring average per game t21.1i. He and team- mate, Junior guard Dexter Wilson, were named to the SAC All-Conference team. In spite of these impressive statistics, teams could not key on Brian because of the abilities of the other players. This was a team loaded with talent which set five team records: 46.1070 field goal average, 15 con- secutive wins, 401 assists, 167 steals, and a 78.7 scoring average. The final team stats show an edge over its opponents in every category. It was a team which was eight deep with players who could almost score at will, while at the same time badger their opponents with a man-to-man press defense led by Mr. Defense, Steve Klein. With 152 assists, Dexter Wilson broke his own assists record by 40! Greg Snyder led in fewest errors per minute played. Bruce Koetter was second among the starters in field goal percentage and re- bounds. As reserves, Cliff Wilson scored at a 55.2070 clip, Troy Cook was second in free throw shooting With 73.3070, and Ken Meunier was third in rebound- ing. Kevin Farler, David Scott, and Greg Lamb com- pleted a roster which gave Coach Porter total flexibil- ity. This was a team which loved the game and the fans loved the team. Showing constant improvement, the J.V.'s won their last five games thus avenging earlier losses to Pekin Eastern and Henry- ville. The late season success can be traced to better defense, improved free throw shooting, and Skooter . Greg Skooter Lamb had been injured in the first game of the season and with his return to the line-up, the team had the spark which had been lack- ing as they learned to play as a team. FRESHMEN: tRecord 0-13 The Freshman year is the most difficult year for yielding a successful season. The ranks of the squad are often depleted because some players do not return to Borden from the eighth grade and some move up to Junior Varsity play. Sectional qualifiers were Gena Porter in both the 200 meter and the shot put and sophomore Elaine Book in the dis- cus. Leading the team was senior Gena Porter who was named Most Valuable Player for the fourth time in her high school career. Throughout the entire season Gena was hampered in her specialty, the sprints, by a pulled thigh muscle received the day before the first meet. Toward season's end when it became too pain- ful for her to run the sprints, Gena, who still wanted to compete, tried races with more distance, the 400 and 800 meter. Even though she had not trained for these distances and had never run them, Gena not only won, she set school records in both! During her track career, Gena anchored the 400 relay team and holds individual records in the following: shot put l34'1 l, 100m l12.6l, 200m l26.3l, 400m l1:04.6l, 800m l2:36.3l. STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD Citizens Bank 8t Trust Co. is sponsoring for the eighth year, a Student Advisory Board. One goal of the Board is to educate students about managing personal income, accepting credit responsi- bility, and how to finance a college education. To meet this goal, the board makes presentations, explaining these activities to high school classes. Another goal is to demonstrate the need for youth involvement in community affairs. To accomplish this goal the students help at Christmas time with the Student Advisory Board Toy Drive for Orphans , and they participate in the Red Cross Blood program by assisting with blood drives held in their respective schools.
