WW i AM QVM Q? I M i v, WXKP i505 6'14 ogwt : x Q? Mr. Carl Wynn, principal of Borden School, has been serving with distinction and dedication to the educational process for the past 13 years. It must be remembered that principals are taken for granted, because we arenit always aware of many little things that they do to insure a smoothly operating educational environment. We recognize the larger things he does, but what about the time he takes to speak to the students, to joke around with them, to go out of his way to say iihif or to try to really help the students with their problems? Maybe you donit realize it, but it takes a lot to be a man who can be both loved and respected like Mr. Wynn. The Yearbook Staff W W 1; A . Lisa Nalc CHEERLEADERS -n 3'...th I VARSITY: This has been one of the most gratifying years of my coaching life. After a slow start with a two and five record. the young Braves started rolling. From that point in their season. they went on to a very good eight and five record. The Braves defeated some highly regarded schools during this stretch drive. Starting with Salem. they went on to defeat Orleans. Austin. West Washing- ton. New Washington. Lanesville. and Dubois. This years team finished with a major effort in the sectional by defeating Corydon 69-49 and then, just barely losing to Floyd Central in the championship game 48-56. Winning these games has been satisfying for me as the coach. However. the most satisfying of all is to have coached such a dedicated. hard-working group of young athletes who had an excellent attitude. This team has pre- pared the way for what could be an exceptional basketball future for Borden High School. JR. VARSITY: The Junior Varsity team enjoyed a successful year. Our record was l5-5 and the largest margin of defeat was only 6 points. The high- light of the season was defeating Eastern twice. They had one of the better teams we faced this year. The second time we played them. Troy Cook had 17 of his l9 points in the first half, which enabled us to go into the locker room at halftime leading by 5 points. We defeated such teams as Dubois. South Cen- tral. Lanesville. Orleans. and New Washington. Some of the leaders in the statistical department were as follows: David Scott - leading rebounder 207 Cliff Wilson - assists 56 Greg Lamb - freethrows 63572; David Scott - best field goal percentage 59.770 Cliff Wilson - leading scorer 9 pts.lgame As a team. we shot 4070 from the field and 5570 from the freethrow line. We averaged 38.l rebounds per game. and 48 points per game. The team had good balance in scoring since 7 players averaged between 3 and 9 points per game. By putting in a lot of hard work over the summer. some of these young men will be able to contribute to the success of the Varsity team next year. FRESHMAN: The l978-79 Freshman record was 2-l4. The team started slowly. but as the season progressed, steady improvement was evident. Many of the early problems encountered by the team centered around poor execu- tion of offense. and the inability to put the ball through the hoops. At mid- season. the team seemed to solve its offensive problems. beating Henryville and having a close contest with Silver Creek. who had defeated our team ear- lier by a very large margin. The season was highlighted by a triple over-time victory over New Washington to revenge an early season loss. Much of the mid-season improvement was due to their attitudes and will- ingness to work hard. I feel that these young men will contribute greatly to the future success of Borden's basketball program. ,. Just after a good victory over a tough Sale rash of injuries. illness and grade problems took their toll on the teal rest of the team never gave up. and kept battling even though she With such determination and hard work, these young men will I asset to the Borden High School basketball teams of the future. SEVENTH: The l978-79 Seventh grade basketball team complet successful season with a record of ll wins against 6 losses. Starti wins out of the first 9 games before Christmas vacation. Two of were won heading into the West Washington Jr. High Tourney. E first game. the Braves outscored Salem 30-7 in the second half to c score on Salem. and win with the final score of 46-23. They won all but 3 of their regular season games and advanced to the finals of.the regional where they lost to Scottshurg. This year's team was the same as the team that won the Silver Creek Sectional last year. Unfortunately. three members of this team will be graduating. Connie Book. a senior. was starting forward and was the stabilizing element when the team was under great pressure. Connie played the weak-side forward on offense and with her successful shooting. managed to keep the opponents defense honest. Karen Book. a senior. started in the other forward position. Karen's offensive power and rebounding strength were well known by our opponents 7 if not before. at least after the game was over. Karen averaged better than I5 points per game and IS rebounds. Karen Meunier, a senior. started at guard. Though not as tall as most of her opponents. Karen had the impact of a giant on defense. She and her running mate could take any opponents out of their game plan. Karen was the llspark plug and kept the defense of the entire team alert. During the regular season. the girls also won the Washington Co. Invitational Tourney by beating Eastern in the preliminary round and defeating Salem for the championship. The team had 3 girls named to All-Conference; Gena Porter. Karen Book. and Lisa Roth. Two girls were also named to the Courier-Journal 8: Times All-State listings. The Borden girls basketball team has established a tradition of winning and everyone is extremely proud of them. JUNIOR VARSITY: The girls'junior varsity team also had a very successful season. The team compiled a record of twelve wins against one loss. The loss was to Floyd Central by two points early in the season. After this defeat the team gathered momentum which carried them through the remainder of the season. This youngjunior varsity team of freshmen and sophomores should give us a lot of good basketball to look forward to in the future. Basketball 89 maneuozvr HME: I 'IV... Julia Farmer also competed in the shot put at the Jeffersonville Sectional. Several school records were broken this year. The 440 relay team consisting of Eileen Smithy Janice Martin. Cliff Wilson was the winning pitcher in each of these victories. Our conference record was 3-3. This yearis team consisted of two seniors. ninejuniors. four sophomores and six freshmen. This was a young team which was demonstrated at times by our play on the field. We were not aggressive at the plate. but looked good in base running. At times. though. the boys showed promise of becoming a good baseball team. If they work hard next year. they should improve greatly upon this yearis record. The winner of the batting trophy was Troy Cook. His batting average was .282. Dexter Wilson was the recipient of the MVP. He earned this by his consistent play in the field and at the plate. 6 Hz. w r Jam ' r3. . . e35 50133.9: 32 .53 $?qu .mzwwrwm $2 .32 ?chsvgw , no.0 .552 no.5 60.5: 25 conga: .8259 E53 .5923! .33: 93 .I 33.
