Returning only three players with mentionable playing time from a 12-6 1976-77 team, the Braves were thought to lack the depth needed to win ballgames. But through practice, determination, and the leadership of seniors ' Tom Higdon and David McKinley and Junior Eric Herzog, the Braves posted an 1 1-8 mark despite their inexperience. Highlights of the season included a close contest with heavily favored Crawford County and a 7 of 8 game winning streak down the stretch. The Braves faced 6 much stronger Floyd Central in the sectional and played a superb first half only to I be out-manned by the Highlanders in the second half. i Statistically, Eric Herzog led the Braves with a 15.5 points per game average fol- lowed by David McKinleyls 12.2, McKinley led the rebounding with an 11.6 aver- age, and the field goal shooting with a 4570 accuracy mark. Sophomore Brian Robertson led the team in free-throw shooting with a 70.570 mark. Tom Higdon led in assists dishing out 98 for the season. The Braves as a team led the opponents in all categories except field goals attempted, the opponent averaged 50.2 points per game compared to 56.3 for the Braves. The Braves held a 6-1 mark on their home court; they lost only to Austin. Coach Porter will have juniors Eric Herzog, James Jackson, Mike Everage, and f sophomores Brian Robertson, Steve Klein, and Greg Snyder to build next years team on. I J UNIOR VARSITY: The 1977-78 junior varsity basketball team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in some time. Their record was 13-4, which is a win- ning percentage of 76.5. This was one of the most balanced teams that we have had. There were fourteen boys on the team, and eleven of them shot 5070 or better from the free-throw line. None of them averaged in double figures for scoring, which is an indication that several of the fourteen boys played in all of the games. In six of the games at least 10 boys scored. 6 One of the highlights of our season was defeating Austin. The JV finished with ' a 4-0 record in the Southern Athletic Conference, which consists of Austin, Bor- den, Crothersville, Eastern, Henryville, and New Washington. They also defeated Eastern three times and New Washington twice. Two of the things that contributed to their success were their attitude and will- ingness to work hard. If they continue with this same attitude and willingness, they cannot but be an asset to the varsity or junior varsity team next year. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL: The 1977-78 Freshmanls 1-5 record this year would on the surface indicate an unsuccessful and uneventful year; however, the record does not necessarily indicate the full scope of this yearls team. For exam- ple, we defeated our long time rival, Eastern, by a score of 71-59. Several of this 5 years games were very close scores such as: Borden 47 - Henryville 48 and Bor- den 42 - Clarksville 44. Good free-throw shooting, 6670 avg. as compared to 5470 5 avg. for our opponents, demonstrates the potential of our Freshman team. Our fouling record also points to our success, we averaged only nine fouls per game for the year. Even though the season was interrupted badly by snow, coach Lock- mund feels that the Freshmen did a good job of representing Borden and will con- tinue to do so during their high school years. 8th GRADE BASKETBALL: Bordenls eighth grade team completed the sea- son with a record of two wins against eight losses. The team started slowly, but as the season progressed, showed steady improvement. The team seemed to solve its : scoring problems by Christmas because they won two out of three games, beating Salem and Henryville. The teamls season was hurt due to the bad weather which i prevented the team from practicing and causing cancellation of seven games. Mike Ooley twinner of defensive awardl, Chris Stumler twinner of free-throw award with 68 percent; John Trainor, Junie Bierman and Todd Boling were responsible for much of the teams offensive and defensive contributions. The team received much support from Rusty Franklin, Travis Martin, Pat Young, Steve Graf, Chuck Huber, Jim Jacobs, and Steve Johnson. The group as a team shot 6070 at the free-throw line. The team showed a great desire to work hard and to improve their abilities. These boys will certainly make a contribution to the basketball program of BHS in the future. 7th GRADE BASKETBALL: The team had a record of one win and eight losses for the 1977-78 season. The season was highlighted by a victory over Salem and a very strong performance against Eastern in the season ending Washington Co. tournament. -4-44q 5:9... 3303 :quU 98 .5832. x200 demxos. 8E2. uocmowzotx Em $25202 Ego domtunoz carm .ono: 25 6353.. 8:2 5:30 8:2 580 E852 unintsm .5335 :2. :Euzmcm.m can .505. 32w .houzcm mEO dovwf th .565 8:2 :2:th 8:2 .bbzwzmo EC. .uwmcaz 5ng 2 $1: wEEEQ 446Nmrmem4mm ?memdqcr S E V M B IN ACTION commas: Eouam 8.3L 8.. van .5352 :5me 813m zccxx .5293. 82m .Bzomqum wsoo .6me ?ok 6:25.20 :Sox ism Ego .EEBZ 52:52 uogcw wEO .Btav 3:2 580 ..m5.u:3m. .5332, 5:2 93 .xooU ho; .285 wEO 58:3 6:80 58:3 EU .85. The team is very proud of having won the GirPs Sectional at Silver Creek this year. Due to the inclement weather. much valua- ble practice time was lost, but the girls were able to overcome this obstacle. The team came onto the floor and played their own type of game. In the preliminary round the girls defeated Henryville 47-33, and defeated Silver Creek for the Sectional trophy by a score of 54- 42. In the regional, the team played Floyd Central. After giving their much taller opponents a really close first half, the girls were defeated by the final score of 49-35. 59Wm:; QHWFM wkymeuww?Fr amxrz kzmmzzm ka 3 ENE? 0033 onEH mEaaE Kmammo? 003:8 woor. They ended the season with 10 wins and 4 losses. Due to the icy weather. five games were cancelled, which could have added to the successful season. The Varsity was very young; both by age and experience. Since Borden doesnit have a Junior High program, the girls first opportunity to compete is at the Freshman level. Only seven girls returned from last years team, none of which were Seniors. The team was led in scoring and rebounding by J unior forward Karen Book. She averaged 17 points and 15 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Gena Porter did most of the ball-handling on the point, hit the best percentage from the field. and was the second leading scorer with an average of 15.7 points per game. Gena was also on top at the free-throw line. hitting 50.6 percent. Junior Karen Meunier. the teams defensive ace and second guard. was the chief reason the opponents average score was under 41 points per game. It is certain that the girls success was at least half due to their defense. Sophomore Monica Hurst. substitute guard for Karen Meunier, did a great job at defense when Karen was out of the game. Sophomore center Lisa Roth was the key to the teams inside game. Lisa went strongly to the boards and took charge inside. Junior forward Connie Book was the main strength on the weak-side offensive pattern. Connie may be small, but her ability to think quickly and her excellent set shot served the team well. Sophomore Donna Koerber substituted for both Lisa at center and Connie at forward. She battled hard both on the boards and on defense. Donna lacked the experience for a polished player, but has the will necessary to become one of the teams strongest players. To complete the 12 member Varsity squad. girls were brought up from the Freshman team. These girls had never played in competition before, but before the season was over, they were out there going strong. The Freshman members were Gloria Cavins. Joy Koerber. Julie Rickard, Linda Meunier, and Stacy Gray. J. V. The J .V. team was composed of girls who had had no previous playing experience. They started out slowly. but at the end of the season there was a noticeable improvement. The experience they gained this year will be an asset to next years team. Other shotputters were: Julie Farmer, Linda Meunier, Julie Rickard. Yvonne Lee. and Stacey Gray. The softball throw was led by Karen Meunier followed by Donna Koerber, Kathy Baxter, Julie Farmer, Yvonne Lee, and Mattie Allen. Lisa Roth led the longjump. with Linda Meunier and Pam Denham improving throughout the season. There were only two high jumpers, Lisa Roth and Lisa Porter, but their efforts were not unnoticed. One member of the team qualified for the Sectional. Gena Porter qualified in the lOO-yard dash, placing fifth. Genals efforts and ability were rewarded with the MVP award in girls track. The girls are looking forward to next season with high hopes and enthusiasm. The experience gained this year will hopefully benefit next yearls team. . .-. A . m V . vv. Is!
