ECHOES '77 A Time for Every Purpose Borden High School Borden, Indiana Dedication The 1977 Echoes Dedication is a dual award given to Melva Carter and Charles Graninger. When choosing a recip- ient for the yearbook dedication, many people came to mind who deserved our thanks, but the two who were chosen had been associated with many of our most cherished memories. Not only did they educate us and become dear friends, but most of all they taught us to believe and have confidence in ourselves. As our class sponsors, they brought the class of '77 a long way toward adulthood in the few years in which we worked together. For the respect that they showed the class of '77 , we presented this dedication award with deep honor and pride to our sponsors, Mrs. Carter and MI. Graninger. tRighU: Yearbook editor, Anita Thomas, presents a yearbook dedication momento to Mrs. Caner and Mr. Graninger. . We Remember Bruce BRUCE WAYNE COOLEY In this 1977 Echoes we will reveal the pleasant memories of our senior year, but first we pause to reflect on the loss of our classmate, Bruce Coo- ley. He was taken from us by a fatal car accident in September, 1976. But it is not the loss for which we will remember Bruce, but rather our gain for having known him. We will always remember our friendship and the happy times we shared with Bruce, even as we turn the pages of this - our senior yearbook. Table of Contents A Time To Remember A Time To Teach . . . Although losing to larger schools such as Floyd Central, Salem, and North Harrison, the varsity held its own against schools of comparable size to Borden. Hard work on funda- mentals paid off as the season progressed. In the match with Medora, Borden's serving was perfect with no misses; in the Medora and West Washington matches, the varsity gave up only two points. Climaxing the season was the final contest when Lanesville jumped out to an early lead and won the first game. Borden took the second; and with spirited efforts by players and fans, the varsity went from a 14-15 deficit to score the next three winning points. Leader in individual performances for the season was Most Valuable Player, Senior Kim Nicholson, who had the small- est percentage of errors and the highest percentage of suc- cessful serves 192 out of 941. Kim. along with Sophomore Karen Meunier, was voted All-Conference in the SAC. Sen- ior Donna Everage made 81 out of 84 serves during the sea- son. Other Senior regulars, Melanie Martin, Lonita McKinley, and Melinda Nicholson will be sadly missed next year, but returning Sophomore regulars Karen Meunier and Linda Higdon should provide the leadership for a young, but talented team. JUNIOR VARSITY: After a disappointing season opener with Henryville, the J.V. team posted an impressive 10-2 won- lost record. Rarely challenged as the season progressed, the team showed the determination and courage of true champi- ons as they battled twice-beaten Lanesville in the final match of the season. With the score tied several times, the last at 15-15, the girls quickly added two points for the win- ning margin. Outstanding performances were given by many girls in var- ious games, but of particular note was the serving of Fresh- man Gena Porter. Gena served 172 successful serves out of 181, including a perfect game, 15 straight points, against West Washington. The Junior Varsity girls will have a bright future on the Varsity next year. Seniors Melanie Martin, Kim Nicholson, and Melinda Nicholson pause to rest as a substitution is made. Sophomore Karen Meunier leaps in the air to return a serve. a Freshman Gena Porter launches a powerful serve to her opponents. tTop Lefty Senior Lonita McKinley returns a volley to the opponents. tMiddle Lefty Playing the middle, Senior Kim Nicholson watches the server as the signal is given to start the play. tMiddle Rightt: Senior Melanie Martin sets up the ball as teammates get ready to return it. With a season record of 61 wins and 21 losses, invitational victories at West Washington and Clarksville, and the South- ern Athletic Conference Title , the Braves continued as one of the top teams in our area. Basketball in Review VARSITY: The 1976-77 Borden Braves basketball team put together the best won-lost record T12-7l since the 1964-65 team. This was accomplished by long hours, hard work, and three years of preparation for many of the players. Highlighting the successes of this team were the victories in the Washington County Tourney. For the first time ever. the Braves captured the tourney title by beating West Wash- ington t69-49l and Salem t60-57l in the championship game. Seniors Danny Rowan and David Robertson were named to the All-Tourney Team. The Braves dueled Dubois for the Lost River Conference Championship and lost a two point heartbreaker to finish sec- ond in the conference with a 4-1 record. iThe loss was eased somewhat when the Dubois team became an eventual finalist in the Evansville Semi-State TourneyJ Danny Rowan and David Robertson were named to the LRAC All-Conference Team. In the Southern Athletic Conference. the Braves fin- ished with a 2-2 record. Danny and David again made the All-Conference team. The 1976-77 Braves were a very good defensive team; they held their opponents to 63 points per game while scoring an average 70 points per game. The team shot 42070 from the field; 58.8070 from the free-throw line, and out-rebounded their opponents by a 44-33 average per game. To show the balance and depth of the starting line-up, we need only list the following accomplishments. Scoring an average of 20.6 points per game. senior guard Dan Rowan never scored out of double figures. Voted Most Valuable Player. Danny had a season high of 37 points against Orleans and twice scored 30, against Pekin Eastern and Crothersville. To complete a fine career at Borden, Danny was named All- State Honorable Mention. Senior forward David Robertson averaged 13.3 points per game and led the team in rebounding with a 10.2 average. David battled the opponents' top forwards and for his efforts he earned the team's Defensive Award. Another fine defensive performer was senior guard Frank Brown who continually harassed the opposition's top guard. Frank, the team's leader in assists with 82, was also awarded the coveted Sportsmanship Award . Senior center Pete Roth used his 6'4 frame to intimidate the opposing centers and drew numerous fouls in taking the ball to the basket. Pete's 7470 performance at the charity stripe earned him the Varsity Free Throw Award . As the only returning starter, sophomore forward Eric Her- zog will provide the nucleus for a rebuilding team. Eric averaged 9.6 points per game and in spite of good defensive hustle , Eric committed the lowest percentage of fouls. Depth was one of our strong factors this year. The bench consisted of seniors Don Balentine, Rudy Cook, Tony Hedrick, Mark Koetter, and Tim Rice; and juniors Tom Hig- don and David McKinley. These players are to be com- mended for their excellent attitudes and their strong reserve roles. In expressing his feelings about the team. Coach Wes Porter said, It was an extreme pleasure for me to have coached a group of young men who worked as hard and dedi- cated themselves to the game as much as this year's team. This record will certainly be a challenge for future teams at Borden High School . ' ' JUNIOR VARSITY: The Junior Varsity's 8-10 record does not necessarily indicate the success or failure of the J . V. season. As the season progressed , the team continued to improve and play better ball. The statistics show that the team's free throw percentage increased, even though the field goal per- centage fluctuated somewhat. One of the bright spots in the J.V. season was defeating arch-rival Pekin Eastern. Another plus was the steady play of freshman Brian Robertson who received the Junior Varsity Free Throw Award $90701. Brian played consistently throughout the season and earned a start- ing position by mid-season. Coach Carter feels that if the boys work hard during the summer, they cannot help but add success to the basketball program next year. FRESHMEN: This year's Freshman team had a winning season at 4-3. The victories came over Pekin Eastern, Salem, Clarksville, and Henryville. Even though five games were i canceled due to weather problems, the freshmen were very successful in demonstrating their basketball abilities. This . team was one of the best all around freshman ball teams that Borden has had for awhile. Coach Lockmund believes these boys will continue to improve and be successful in the years 4 ahead. EIGHTH GRADE: Led by Troy Cook, Dean Klein, Greg: Lamb, and Dexter Wilson the eighth grade posted an impres- I sive 12-4 record. Winning the Washington County Tourney was one of many high points in the eighth grade's season. Success has marked the eighth graders throughout their junior high careers. This team had a junior high record of 29-6, including two Washington County Tourney Championships. 1 VARSITY SEASON RECORD 02-3 OPPONENTS Medora Eastern New Washington Crawford County South Central West Washington Salem Austin Moores Hill Henryville Medora Portland Christian West Washington Orleans Lanesville Henryville Dubois Crothersville SECTIONAL: 45 Lanesville 55 The team shows great promise for the future because of their quickness, their attitudes and their enthusiasm. SEVENTH GRADE: The seventh graders, whose record was 2- 11. suffered a great disadvantage from their lack of height. Just as the team was showing marked improvement, the long snow lay-off caused them many set-backs. At the end of the season they were beginning to show some consistent team work and improved ball-handling skills. The athletic depart- ment would like to express appreciation to Coach Tony Akers for coaching the seventh grade team. 4. .r.4m. 68 JUNIOR VARSITY: Grono: Kelly Popp, Denise Bogusz, Shirley Balemine, Janet Bogusz. In only its second year, the girls' basketball team posted a very fine record of 7-4. Having played the toughest teams on the schedule before the winter snow storm forced cancella- tion of the last six games, it is almost a certainty that the record could have been even better. l , Highlights of the season came during tournament play. The girls brought home the runner-up trophy from the Salem Invi- tational Tourney and followed it at season's end with a sec- ond place finish in the Floyd Central sectional. The girls played New Albany, a team many considered to be the best in our area, but lost the chance for their first sectional crown. The game was close in the first half with Borden leading throughout much of it, but the girls finally succum- bed 35-58 . a. :r l, ; This year's basketball squad consisted of six seniors, four sophomores, and five freshmen. The seniors demonstrated 1 h much leadership and determination which was certainly a 1 vital ingredient in the team's successful season. Senior for- ward Theresa Kirchgessner was named Most Valuable Player; senior center Lu Ann McKinley received the Sportsmanship Award; and senior guard Lonita McKinley earned the Varsity Free Throw Award with her fine 7570 performance. Together with seniors Melanie Martin, Kim Nicholson, and Melinda Nicholson, these girls have pioneered the girls' basketball program at BHS and they will be greatly missed. The performance of the underclassmen showed a potential for continued success. The Junior Varsity squad posted a 5-2 record, losing only to New Albany and Floyd Central. The girls on the J.V. team gained valuable experience and with continued hard work and dedication will find many of the vacancies created by graduation. iTopl: Theresa Kirchgessner shoots over a Lanesville defender as Karen books positions for the rebound . . tBottoml: Karen Book fires a shot while Kim Nicholson and LuAnn McKinley g prepare to follow-up. 1'- -.uII4I I VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL: Girorm: Student Manager Connie Martin, Connie Book, Karen Meunier. Three freshmen had broken the starting line-up by season's end, and we can expect continued improvement from these young players. As a team, the Braves worked very hard and a noticeable improvement was seen from last season. While at times the bats seemed to go silent or fielding errors occurred, the Braves didn't lose their spirit. The fact that the Braves could battle New Washington, Orleans, and Crawford County before falling with identical 2-3 scores shows the improve- ment of the 1977 team. Fine pitching and consistency won the Most Valuable Player Award for Senior Ronnie Jacobs while Junior Tom Hig- don, batting .348, won the Batting Trophy. Along with Ron- nie the Braves will lose the following starting seniors: Don Balentine and Chuck Ballard, outfielders; Frank Brown, catcher; Pete Roth, pitcher and first baseman. With no seniors and only five girls returning from last year, the 1977 Girls' Track team definitely faced a rebuilding year. With the opening of the new track facility this year and the potential displayed from this year's team, next year could be an outstanding year. Twelve runners and two man- agers tover half the teaml lettered for the Braves this year. Ten freshmen finished the season and since all these girls will be returning the nucleus is there for a fine team . Gena Porter. an outstanding freshman runner, was named Most Valuable Track Runner for 1977. Participating in the 220 yard dash, the 440 relay, and the shot put, Gena did equally well in all three events. Not far behind Gena in accumulated points was Junior Theresa Grantz, a returning letter winner from last year. Theresa participated in the 100 yard dash, 440 relay, and the long jump.
