r 197 6 IND Bonden High School COLL yearbook . . 371 . 897 Bar We celebrate the past to awaken the future . John F . Kennedy EA few years ago if you asked someone to define the Spirit i '76 you would probably get an icy cold stare. But now if in asked the same question to twenty different people, you uld probably get twenty answers, most of which would be ed in with the word bicentennial. Since the term icentennial means the 200th birthday of the greatest buntry on Earth, it is used quite frequently when speaking of be Spirit of '76. iThe Spirit of 76, which was the driving force inherent in lr founding fathers, led to the development of the two most leaningful works of literature besides the Bible, upon which iey are based. They are our Constitution and the Declara- ion of Independence. Men like Thomas Jefferson, Ben tanklin, and George Washington, just to name a few, had lis spirit which led them to strive for a free and independent puntry. This spirit guided these men and others through the 'tuggle of independence, the Civil War, World War I and II, brea, and Vietnam to preserve the idea that all men are teated equally and should be free to choose their religion, Teak freely, and free from worry of harm. This driving force 1 l ECHOES 1976 Borden High School Borden, Indiana is properly called the Spirit of '76 . We, as members of the Bicentennial Year Graduating Class of Borden High School, feel that we experienced something that no other graduating class will ever experience again. We had the privilege of graduating in 1976, the year that Americans everywhere will celebrate the 200th birthday of our country. America's Bicentennial year is a very special year. It is a time for Americans to recall the events of all the past years of our country's existence . Remembering our past, helps us to build for the future. This year is a time to reflect upon, not only our past achievements, but also our past mistakes. America has much to learn from its past. Our hope is that the Bicentennial celebrations will awaken the American people to their responsibilities. We would like to see a renewal of the spirit of achievement upon which this country was founded. Americans must continue striving to build a better world, not only for the present, but for future generations as well. M, Vm -.- MAT TA '; f As teacher, athletic director, and friend, Mike Carter has helped each of us in many ways. This 1976 dedication is made to show our appreciation for the countless hours he has given to Borden High School. Being athletic director for boy's and girl's sports is a time consuming job. Whether making schedules, trying to buy uniforms and equipment, coaching basketball, or transporting teams in his own car, Mr. Carter has handled his duties efficiently and with the students wel- fare always as top priority. But never has he let these respon- sibilities interfere with his first responsibility - the students in his classroom. We want to thank him for helping us in and . out of the classroom. Above all he has been our friend. We a, thank you Mr. Carter for all you have done for us and for - a everything you will do for all future students. '4 n. r .. rah , . .. h. The LRAC Cham- pionship was the fifth consecutive one that the Braves have brought to BHS. The SAC Championship slipped away from N L the Braves this year, but since the team loses only one run- ner, the possibility of returning both crowns next year looks very good. Although the team will miss the dedication of senior Jeff Hunt, returning next year will be the Cross Coun- try Most Valuable Runner, Kevin Coats who was All Confer- ence in both the LRAC and SAC. Other All Conference run- 7'2 11ers who will be returning are David McKinley, who placed i first in the SAC title run; Donnie Balentine , who received the Most Dedicated Runner award; and Terry Lamb, who placed sixth out of forty runners in the LRAC. All of these runners placed within the top ten in BOTH conferences. However, the junior varsity did somewhat better by win- ning three big matches over Salem, Pekin Eastern, and West Washington. Even though its varsity record is the worse, this year's varsity team made more improvement in individual skills than any of the previous teams. The greatest problem was lack of experience. Three of the starters had had no experience, and one had had no varsity experience. There were times when the team played well enough to win, only to see the victory slip away at the end. With more experi- ence the team should gain the confidence needed to hold on and be winners. Next year's team will miss Brenda Koetter's serving and Myra Wright's spiking as well as the able substituting of Carol Faske. However, the team should be strong because of the returning better men. Providing good serving will be Kim Nicholson, and LuAnn Morris; at the set up position will be two good competition, Melanie Martin and Lonita McKinley. Melinda Nicholson has the potential to be an excellent spiker. These girls should be good all-around play- ers. Three Juniors from this year's junior varsity who will be competing for a starting position are Donna Stephens ta good all-around playerl, Donna Everage ta better than average serverl and Connie Martin. Also in the running for a starting position will be Cathy Sparks, a much improved sophomore, and two promising freshmen, Karen Meunier and Beth Wynn. Borden High School made another step into the world of girls' athletics by beginning interscholastic basketball for the girls. The varsity record was 4-8 but the junior varsity enjoyed a winning season at 6e3. While the varsity did not have a winning season, it must be remembered that in their very first attempt at competitive basketball, our girls' team played the biggest schools in our area . Consider the following competition: New Albany tthree timesi, Jeffersonville, Floyd Central, and North Harrison. The varsity defeated North Harrison, lost by one point to Floyd Central in a game which they had led by as many as ten points for almost the entire game, and leading at half time, surprised Jeff for three quar- ters. To top it off the girls went into the Floyd Central sec- tional and won their first game! Borden averaged 41.9 points per game on the season to their opponents 43.3 points. The team loses its starting center, Myra Wright, but all others return, including Most Valuable Player, Theresa Kirchgess- ner. With the experience gained this year, BHS can hope for improved results next year. It is always difficult to be first, to pave the way for others, but this year's squads gave a fine effort, one to remember with pride. The worse of which was inexperience with only three members of the 1974-75 varsity returning for this year. Inju- ries also took their toll including Mike Kirchgessner's second broken wrist at sectional time. Despite the difficulties the Braves still managed to win nine games while losing thir- teen. Team statistics show that errors caused the major trouble for the inexperienced Braves who had 373 errors to their opponents 303. On the positive side, the young Braves has a better field goal percentage than their opponents 69.5070 compared to 38.9070i, had more rebounds i730 to 665i, had more assists i235 to 208i and lost the free throw category by only two percentage points 60070 to 62701. The fact that the Braves point average was 68 compared to 71 for their oppo- nents, shows how close some of those thirteen losses really were. This is certainly a credit to these young men. The most satisfying of the victories was the sectional win over arch-rival Pekin Eastern. The first sectional win for the basketball boys since 1954 caused quite a stir in our small community. Individual leaders in every category, except senior Mike Kirchgessner's offensive rebounding, will return for next sea- son. With much determination, dedication, and hard work, the future looks bright for the Varsity Braves. JUNIOR VARSITY: The J.V. 's enjoyed a very successful sea- son finishing with a 15-5 record. Some of the season's high points were the defeats of Pekin Eastern itwicei, Austin, Orleans, Milltown, and New Washington. Some of these were thought to be the team's toughest challenges and the I. V. '5 passed these challenges and many others in their quest for a highly successful season. The leading scorer for the team was Eric Herzog who aver- aged 10.3 points per game. David McKinley was the leading rebounder with 120 and Tom Higdon led in the assists depart- ment with 29. As a team, they averaged 45.1 points per game, while holding their opponents to 39.1 points per game, and out-rebounded their opponents for the season. Coach Carter said he was pleased with the season and proud of the way the boys conducted themselves on the court. The team showed great hustle, defense, and desire for the game throughout the entire season. FRESHMEN: When faced with saying something about a sea- son record which includes no wins, the task becomes very difficult. Consistency is something every team tries to achieve - but not consistency in losing. Nevertheless, the Freshman team was consistent in a very much more notewor- thy than the losing. They were consistent in their efforts to keep trying. There are many things which was combined to cause a losing season, and the Freshmen suffered through them. The easy thing to do when faced with a situation like theirs is to quit. It takes a far better person to keep trying than it takes to quit. We congratulate the Freshman team , as we do the Volleyball girls, not for their records, but because they cared enough for BHS to try. EIGHTH GRADE: The eighth grade team completed a win- ning season with a record of 11 wins against 9 losses. The high points of the season came in their 54-45 win over Silver Creek and in capturing the West Washington Tourney. Steve Klein, serving as floor general , scored in double fig- ures in eleven of the twenty games. The high game for Steve was his 25 point effort in the Braves 72-36 win over Henry- Varsity Season Record t9-13i BORDEN OPPONENTS 64 Lanesville 7O 85 Medora 6O 67 New Washington 69 67 Peking Eastern 71 72 English 66 84 Marengo 73 78 South Central 84 55 West Washington 9'7 94 Salem 97 OT 67 Austin 86 80 Crothersville 54 69 Cannelton 67 7O Henryville 82 74 Leavenworth 68 OT 43 Milltown 60 71 Portland Christian 57 46 West Washington 57 67 Medora 64 52 Orleans 63 60 Dubois 75 SECTIONAL 56 Peking Eastern 53 52 North Harrison 83 ville. After two highly successful seasons as winners in junior high, these boys are expected to continue their winning tra- dition as Freshmen. SEVENTH GRADE: Borden's seventh grade basketball team had a very successful season with a record of 16 wins and only 2 losses. Highlighting the season was defeating Salem and West Washington to win the West Washington T ourney. Dean Klein, Joe Kaelin, and Troy Cook were the main rebounding forces that permitted the team to get extra shots on the offensive end of the court. Dexter Wilson and Greg Lamb aided the team by leading many fastbreaks and pene- trating the opponents' defenses, enabling the team to score easily. The strongest part of the seventh grade game was its defense. They held their opponents to an average score of 22 points per game, while scoring an average of 38 points per game. fax: JUNIOR VARSITY: Kneeling: Tim Rice, Mike Farmer, Kent Haycraft, Tom Higdon, Mike Glover, Don Balemine. $tandingk Coach Mike Carter, Manager Jeff Walton, Mark Koetter, Eric Herzog, David McKinley, Derek Jackson, Tony Hedrick, Billy Kirchgessner, Manager Tim Daugherty. The Track Braves placed third in the Lost River Athletic Conference and fourth in the Southern Athletic Conference and finished their regular sea- son with a 3-8 record. The high point of the season came when sophomore David McKinley broke a sixteen year pole ,. - vault record with his jump of 12'. We hope with the comple- -. tion of our new track field and with better equipment that 5 David will be able to break his own record before graduating. x David also qualified for the sectional in the pole vault and in the two mile run. Returning next year with David will be Most Valuable Trackman junior Danny Rowan. Danny's spe- w; cialities are low and high hurdles and pole vault. Also, in the first year for the Southern Athletic Conference Girls' Track Meet, Borden with 41 points placed third behind Crothersville's 79 and Pekin Eastern's 44. Theresa Grantz won the 100 yard dash while the 440 relay team tTheresa Grantz, Taresa Bezy, Kelly Popp, and Rena McKinleyl also came in first. Two school records were broken and one was tied in the SAC meet which shows the total team effort the girls gave to try to win the SAC crown. Wif- V .ilwi gg' '5 To say the 1975-76 baseball season was a frustrating year is an understatement. It was a year which saw the Braves lose every game, but much to their credit, they never gave up. They were in the game trying until the last out was called. While many of the scores were very lopsided, the hits were not. But throughout the entire season, errors killed the Braves. It even seemed as if lady luck was against the Braves in many games. With many of the players young and unaccustomed to their starting roles, this was very definitely a rebuilding year. While losing senior Jeff Hunt who won the Batting Trophy with his .325 hitting, junior Pete Roth, who was named Most Valuable Player because of his versatility in hitting, pitching, and playing first base, will return to help lead the Braves back to the winning road. .geooood :mv'O't'..q11K I :I'lh '- 555 ; a X .' i'ti'V'i :1 v. .Aadqua-H' w..'...'.h I u'fx'. h'.'.'h$mm t l p. WNW -4. 78 Mr. BHS Jeff Hunt The qualifications needed to become Mr. BHS encompass every phase of life at Borden High School - academics, ath- letics, clubs - all combined by a person who displays the best character and school spirit. This description made Jeff Hunt the natural choice of the student body to become Mr. BHS for 1976. A Hoosier Merit Scholar, Jeff was a member of the stu- dent council for two years, serving as treasurer his senior year. For four years Jeff participated in band, basketball, and baseball and received honors in each. Serving as presi- dent of the band, Jeff was named outstanding marching bandsman in his senior year, received the coveted basketball sportsmanship award, and the baseball batting trophy. As a junior, Jeff was vice-president of his class and named by the faculty as delegate to the Hoosier Boys' State. Working on the yearbook staff, running cross country, and participating in the senior play completed a very busy year for Jeff. Miss BHS Brenda Koetter Like Mr. BHS, the senior girl chosen as Miss BHS must also be the best all around supporter of Borden High School. A two year member of the National Honor Society, Brenda served as Secretary her senior year when she was also named a Hoosier Merit Scholar. A booster club member for four years, Brenda was president this year and was selected 1976 Homecoming Queen. She has played volleyball for three years and was captain of the team this year. Active in cadet teaching for four years, Brenda spent much of her free time helping tutor in the grade school. She was president of her class during her junior year and was a two year member of student council. Working on the yearbook staff for two years gave Brenda the experience needed to be co-editor her senior year. Like Jeff, Brenda participated in the senior class play and gave her total support to Borden High School. Jeff and Brenda certainly exemplify what it means to be Mr. and Miss BHS and will be missed at school next year. 79 Echoes Queen Cathy Cavanaugh Queen's Court: Kelly Popp, Debra Purlee, Cathy Rice ' x . n x... .
