Mostly we remember the happy times that we have shared, but some of the memories are painful ones. We remember an unfortunate accident which changed the course of this person's life. If it had been one of us, we would surely have given up. But she did not do so. Her strong faith and will power. and the great amount of love she has received from those around her, have enabled her to persevere. Instead of being bitter at the world, the incident served to make her sweeter and more gentle, and we all love her more for it. There is no doubt in the hearts of the class of '75 as we dedicate the 1975 yearbook to our former class- mate. but our FOREVER friend - Willa Beth Brown. It is an end to our high school days, and a beginning of our adulthood. We must take our place in society and strive to achieve our goals - to make our dreams become realities. In the words of Plato, The beginning is the most important part of the work. Yes, commence- ment is the most important beginning. Eugenio Padilla , an exchange student from Monterrey, Mexico came to spend the year studying at BHS. Eugenio, who lived with our Spanish teacher, A. J. McKinley, understood very little English when he first arrived. Eugenio made friends quickly, however. and we became English teachers. Eugenio learned from us and we learned from him. In the course of the year, we all profited from the experience of sharing cus- toms and ideas. T f 75:41 1.3.:5 CROSS COUNTRY: Five championship trophies, including two conference championships, highlighted another success- ful year for Borden Cross Country. For the fourth consecutive year the Cross Country Braves won the Lost River Conference Championship. To accomplish this feat. the team defeated previously unbeaten Dubois, who had beaten the Braves earlier in the season by 20 points. Jeff Callam's 16th place finish broke a tie score to win the meet for the Braves. In addition to winning the L.R.A.C. , the Braves also captured the conference title of the newly- formed Southern Athletic Conference. The over-all season mark of 50 wins and 9 losses included the following finishes: North Harrison Invitational, 3rd of 18 teams; Clarksville Invitational, 1st of 9 teams; Borden Invi- tational. lst of 4 teams; Paoli Invitational, 2nd of 12 teams; New Washington Invitational, 2nd of 7 teams; Providence Invitational, 3rd of 8 teams; Thomas Jefferson Invitational, bby Koerber, John Finn, Mark Cavins. Coach Jane Heavrin, Student Manager Lonita McKinley, Kathy Lewis, Mary Higdon. - ax Borden's second year of competition in girls' power volleyball ended with a 5-9 record for the varsity and a 5-3 record for the junior varsity. Even though it was the second year of competi- tion for the teams, it was the first year for many of the girls. With only Rose Mary Book and Rose Ann Campbell as returning letter winners from last year, the lack of experience was evi- dent even though the girls worked very hard. Coach Jane Heav- Iin looks forward to next year with confidence that the experi- ence gained this season will be beneficial. Even though our four graduating seniors tRose Mary Book, Rose Ann Campbell, Vivian Hayes, and Kathy Lewisl will be missed, the returning letter winners of Lonnie Chappelle, Carol Faske, Brenda Koet- ter, Myra Sue Wright, and Kim Nicholson, along with the returning Junior Varsity players, are expected to lead next year's team to a winning season. Despite some close losses in the first half of the sea- son, the Braves gave their fans a thrill by defeating arch- rival Pekin Eastern. not once but TWICE. This second victory came in the Washington County Holiday Tourney and set the stage for a championship showdown with Salem. Unfortu- nately, the Braves dropped a one point loss to Salem. Heading into the final part of the season and owning a 4-7 record, the Braves had their backs to the wall. Retaining their self-confidence, the Braves responded with greatness and won seven out of their last eight games. This enabled them to place second in both the Lost River Conference and the newly-formed Southern Athletic Conference . Team statistics show an impressive mark for this year's Braves. They scored 66 points per game while playing great defense and holding their opponents to 63 points per game. The Braves held the rebounding edge, averaging 53 rebounds to their opponent's 39. The team also led in field goals attempted, field goals made, free throws attempted, free throws made. assists, fewer number of fouls, and total points over the opposition. A great defensive club, the varsity showed great desire and determination to become winners, and winners are what they are! mu: 1 3123;; a X .s r E q JUNIOR VARSITY: Finishing with a 14-5 won-lost record, the Junior Varsity enjoyed its most successful season in the past seven years. The manner in which the season began left much room for improvement and the J .V. 's were struggling with a 3-4 record at Christmas time. Much like the Varsity, the J . V. 's pulled themselves together and finished the season with a string of victories. The turning point in the season for the Junior-Varsity was the Washington County Junior Varsity Holiday Tourney. Taking their cue from the Varsity, the I . V. 's defeated Pekin Eastern in the first game. A last second shot by Larry Wade in an overtime period gave the victory to Borden. Unlike the Varsity, the J.V.'s went on to defeat West Washington by 14 points in the championship game. This first-ever Championship for the Junior Varsity did much to give the players the confidence they seemed to lack in the opening of the season. With only one conference loss, the J .V. 's tied West Washington for the Junior Varsity Lost River Conference Championship . As a team, the Junior Varsity shot 41070 from the field. averaged 35 rebounds per game, shot 50070 from the free throw line, and averaged 49 points per game. Some of the individ- ual statistics were impressive also. David Robertson shot 54.2070 from the field and 62.770 from the free throw line. Averaging 10.3 points, David led in scoring and also in ,. assists with 31. David Jameson led the team in rebounding with a total of 145 or '7 . 6 rebounds per game. All of the boys on the team worked very hard and each one played an important role in the course of the season. We are encouraged about next year as we look to these boys to fill the vacancies left by the nine graduating varsity players. FRESHMEN: Despite their 2-10 record, the freshman team made a good acceunting of themselves. Throughout the year the team was plagued by illness and injuries and they lost many close games. The boys showed a tremendous amount of dedication to-BHS by continuing to play in spite of their inju- ries. We are sure these boys will be of great value to the bas- ketball program, both at the junior varsity and the varsity levels. EIGHTH GRADE: The eighth grade Braves compiled a record of 8 wins and '7 losses to maintain a winning season. The team was led by Eric Herzog and James Jackson, but all the players had an important role in obtaining a winning record. SEVENTH GRADE: The seventh grade completed their season with a winning record of 9-4. The young Braves maintained balanced scoring and displayed much hustle throughout the season. The following eight letter winners performed consistently well throughout the season: Seniors John Finn, Jeff Herzog, Bob Koerber, and Mark Ooley; Juniors David Jameson and Rick Schleicher; Sophomores Danny Rowan and Glen Weir. The highlight of the track season was the defeat of Silver Creek which showed that hard work does have its rewards even in a disappointing year. Individual efforts also brightened the year. Two new school records were set by the following: Mark Cavins and Jeff Herzog with identical marks of 5'8 in the high jump; and Rick Schleicher with a 103' discus throw. Senior Mark Ooley qualified for the sectional in the two mile run with a 10:38 time. Named Most Valuable Trackman this year was Sophomore Danny Rowan who will have two more years as a Brave Trackman. Also performing for the Braves this year was Eugenio Padilla, our foreign exchange student from Mexico. We thank Eugenio for his efforts to help BHS, and we wish for all the returning trackmen a winning season next year. tSITTINGl: Rudy Cook, Glen Weir, Tony Hedrick, David Jameson, Mark Herzog, Tim Rice, Don Balentine. tKNEELINGl: Mark Koetter, Dennis Eve, Danny Rowan, Kevin Coats, Terry Lamb, Paul Ehringer, Shawn Ooley, Mike Farmer. tSTANDINGl: Coach Charles Jackson, David McKinley, Rick Schleicher, Bob Koerber, Mark Cavins, John Finn, Mark Ooley, Eugenio Padilla, Jeff Herzog, Jeff Callam. gou' i , t Varsity Girls' Track In spite of a 2-8 won-lost record, the 1975 Girls' Track team did show improvement over last year. Meet scores were much higher and closer than last year, and in addition, many individual accomplishments were made. Still hindered by the lack of a track field, the girls worked extremely hard and dedicated themselves to building a competitive girls' track program for BHS. The following letter winners made great strides in improving their point totals over last year's totals. Most Valuable Player for the second year was Junior Rena McKinley whose specialities are the long jump, hurdles. and 100 yard dash. Rena more than doubled her point total from last year. Other letter winners were Junior Myra Wright - shot put; Junior Barbie Grantz - 440 yard dash. high jump, 880 run; Sophomore LuAnn McKinley - 880 run. shot put, softball throw; Freshman Leisa Cavins - mile run, softball throw; and Freshman Theresa Grantz - 220 yard dash, 100 yard dash. Four girls qualified during the season to compete in the sec- tional. lAgain an improvement over last year when only one girl qualifiedJ Those qualifying for the sectional were Rena McKinley, Myra Wright, Theresa Grantz, and Leisa Cavins. The team was led by four very capable seniors: Jeff Callam. Mark Cavins, Jeff Herzog. and Robert Sampson, who received the Most Valuable Player Award at the end of the season. Following the pattern of the basketball team, the baseball team started the season slowly with a victory over Salem being the only bright spot in five starts. With hard work and determination to have a winning season, however, the young team reversed themselves and completed their season by winning ten of thirteen games. Much credit must be given to a team that will shake off a bad start and not let it harm their self-confidence. With most of the Braves returning, the pro- spects for the next two years look even better. V . M a ' x . . x H 0 . j 9'0! He'q '0 .. 'A 'd'ak'a , I of. i. ' h Pride of Southern Indiana The Pride of Southern Indiana known for its marching and playing ability, participated in many activities this year. Four major marching contests in the fall yielded the following results: Tell City Invitational, parade competition - II, field competition - II; Indiana State Marching Contest at Salem, Superior; Tobaccoland Marching Contest at May- field, Ky, parade competition - 11 field competition - V; Charlestown Marching Contest - V. In the spring the Concert Contest was held at Madison and the Pride received a superior rating . Individual band members participated in the solo and ensemble contest at Clarksville and received 11 firsts, and 12 seconds. In addition to competitions the band played in two Christ- mas concerts. One was held at Silver Creek and consisted of band members from Silver Creek, Henryville, and Borden, and one was held at Borden for the community. Also a big factor to basketball games this year was the presence of the newly formed stage band called Pride, Sec- ond Edition. The Spring Concert, Spring Festival, and Night of the Stars rounded out a busy year for the band. The Pride of Southern Indiana really added much to Borden High School this year and it was possible because of the sincere dedication of the band members and Mr. Pitt who worked constantly throughout the year for. the betterment of the band. This truly was a great year for the Pride of Southern Indi- ana.
