Dedication When the 1974 yearbook staff met to decide this years Echoesl dedication, there were several people who came to mind who are deserving of this honor. But 1974 was a unique year for BHS and this is a unique dedication award. The yearbook staff sincerely hopes that this particular dedication may never be duplicated, for it is dedicated to the victims of the April 3rd tornado. Never before has the town of Borden faced such destruction, and while our school building itself was unharmed, BHS was still touched Closely by the tornado. The twister which disrupted our small community destroyed the homes of our principal, Mr. Wynn, our bus driver, Tommy Hurst, and several of our students. Others who lost their homes and businesses included relatives and friends of us all. Even those students whose homes were unharmed will never forget the hours of anxiety as they waited for word about friends in the devastated areas. We are grateful that only one death resulted from this disaster and that the number injured was small when compared to what might have been. As the event shall never be forgotten, neither should the Spirit of the Borden community. BHS became an emergency station manned by the Salvation Army and volunteers from the community. Spring vacation started two days early as students and teachers pitched in to help. After the initial shock, the victims were determined to get back to normal as quickly as possible. A barn was raised, fields were cleared, and houses were started. While our beautiful trees will never be the same in our lifetime, Borden is still llthe valley beautifulll because of the people who live here. For the victims courage in the face of their loss and for the townis peoplels efforts on their behalf, the 1974 yearbook is dedicated. Bringing home five trophies and compiling a season record of 96 wins and 21 losses, the Braves won the three-year old Lost River Conference Championship for the third straight year! In winning the conference, the Borden runners made the All-Conference Team by finishing as follows: Rick Graf lst, Mark Ooley 2nd, Al Zumstein 3rd, Kevin Coats 6th, Bob Koerber 7th, and Gerald Blalock 9th. Another season highlight was defeating powerful Providence - the first time a Borden team has ever accomplished this. Other teams which fell to the mighty Braves were New Albany, Floyd Central, Corydon, Silver Creek, Clarksville, and Scottsburg. The cross country team featured three seniors: four-year letterman, Rick Graf, three-year letterman, Gerald Blalock, and first-year man, Al Zumstein, who came in and did a fine job. The 1973 Most Valuable Runner was Rick Graf, who finished first for Borden in every meet and set a two mile record at Thomas Jefferson with a 9:57 time. Junior Mark Ooley received the trophy for liMost Miles Runl, with well over 450 miles. Even though the seniors will be missed, the future still looks bright, eSpecially with prospects like Kevin Coats who was named Most Valuable Freshman Runner. Kevin set freshmen records in both the one and a half mile t8:00l and the two and a halfmile t13z59l runs. Next yearls team has the potential to be as good as this yearls team and we wish them success. f ..,. . .$ qude:Wunmdqwiiniw .l' . . . Two teams - a varsity and a junior varsity - competed in six meets with both teams earning identical 4-2 winning records. tTo win a volleyball meet a team must win two out of three games. A game is won with a 15 point score and at least a two point differenceJ For many of the girls it was a new learning situation, but they showed much enthusiasm, teamwork, and talent which contributed much to the winning seasons. Even though it will be difficult to replace the six graduating seniors, the team looks forward to next year with hopes of another winning season. VARSITY MEETS 1:1. They closed the season at 10-9 winning their last three games, including a win over powerful Madison Shawe. Even this winning record might have been better had it not been for the month of November. This first month of the season accounted for almost half of the Braves losses t4 of the 9i. Errors played an important part in these early defeats. In six games in the first half of the season, Borden committed twenty or more errors. However, as the season progressed, the Braves cut their errors in half, reaching a season low of five errors in both the Heltonville and Fayetteville games. Free throw shooting continued to be a headache for most of the Braves. iiGames are won and lost at the free throw line? so the saying goes, and Borden certainly cannot disagree. For the season, Borden scored five more field goals than its opponents, but lost the charity stripe by ninety-six. Nine losses-ninety-six. On the plus side, rebounding was an important edge for the Braves this year. In all but six games tall lossesi, the much smaller Borden squad outrebounded its opponents 778 to 603, thanks to the efforts of Most Valuable Player, Mark Cavins, who pulled down 175. Cavins was ably assisted by Rick Graf with 132 and Mark McKinley with 103. Leading scorer for the Braves was Robert Sampson who had a 14.2 average and led the team in assists. With twenty-six steals, Robert also led the team to an impressive 136-52 advantage over the opposition. The 1973-74 Braves were also blessed with somewhat of a varsity at Borden - bench strength. With a strong bench, Coach Arnold could keep fresh players in the game to employ an effective pressure defense. Bench strength and total team effort pulled the Braves through some very close situations. We can be very proud of this team as they never gave up, but instead, turned some opponent defeats into victories. Looking back at the season we find most of our losses coming at the hands of the more powerful teams in our area. tThree teams were eventual sectional contendersJ The Braves continued to search for that elusive sectional victory. In the Floyd Central Sectional, the first three quarters saw a real battle as Borden frustrated the Pekin Eastern team which expected an easy win. Ahead by only one point at the start of the fourth quarter, the Braves 32 to 15. The Braves just could not buy a basket and the pressure collapsed the dreams of a sectional upset. If it is any consolation, the eventual Sectional Champs, the South Central Rebels, were defeated by the Braves in the regular season. A break here and there and it could have been us. JUNIOR VARSITY: In the five years that Mr. Carter has been Junior Varsity Coach, this years team compiled the best record of 13-5. The boys had a bad start by losing to New Washington, but they came back and won six in a row before bowing to Salem in the Holiday Tourney. They finished the season by winning five of their last six games. The season was a great success for the J.st and Mr. Carter feels that these boys will be a great asset to our Varsity Squad next year. FRESHMEN: The Freshmen started the season with a big win over Austin. After this victory the team started having problems with injuries and some boys sidelined for various other reasons. The boys didnlt give up, however, they continued working hard and eventually won another game against Pekin Eastern. The season wasnlt as successful as Mr. Carter and the team had hoped it would be. Nevertheless, Mr. Carter feels that if these boys work hard and came back with the right attitude they can be a great help to the Junior Varsity team next year. EIGHTH GRADE: Our eighth grade basketball team had another winning season this year. Although this group of boys only won three games as seventh graders, they finished this years season with a record of six wins and live losses. These boys continually improved their game through much hard work and devotion. Mr. Lockmund expects them to make a fine ninth grade team next year. SEVENTH GRADE: Even though the seventh gradels won-lost record 6-81 may not be impressive, Borden can be proud of this team. They never called it quits, but instead, worked diligently and improved throughout the season. With continued work they will be a much improved eighth grade team. The returning lettermen, Rick Graf, Alan Zunstein, Mark Ooley, and Bob Koerber had to provide much of the team scoring. Even though weak in the field events, the track team was strong in the middle and distance runs. Rick Graf excelled in the l mile and half-mile runs and qualified for the sectional in both i runs. Rick established a new half-mile record of 2202.4, beating I t the record he established as a sophomore. For his outstanding and constant performance in totaling 73 points throughout the season, Rick was named Most Valuable Trackmen. Also turning in good performances, Bob Koerber, Mark Ooley, and Al Zunstein qualified for the sectional in the two-mile run. Borden consistently has been able to compete in the track Q events, but the field events have been our downfall. Lacking a ! track field, it is difficult to perfect the skills needed to be successful in the field events. But track season for next year looks i brighter with people like Dan Rowen, and David Jameson ll returning to run dashes, and many freshmen who will help : strengthen the field events. In addition, Bob Koerber, Mark .l Ooley, and Kevin Coats will be valuable distance runners. Varsity Girls Track Girls, track works under the same hardship that hinders the boys track team; we have no track field at BHS. It is definite handicap when a team has no real place to practice and must run ?i all meets away from home, losing the psychological edge of having a home crowd to boost them. Despite this, the girls track team is in its second year, had six girls letter by scoring at least two points per meet or a total of ten points. The letter winners were as follows: Senior, Bert Koerber, in the 880, longjump, and shot put; Junior, Debbie Hardsaw, in the shot put and softball throw; Sophomores, Barbie Grantz, in the high jump; Rena McKinley, in the 80 yard hurdles; and Myra Wright in the shot ' i put tMyra also qualified for the Jeffersonville sectionaD; and ; Freshman, Janet Bierly, in the 220. Rena McKinley, with a 27 i point total, was chosen Most Valuable Player for her consistently fine performances. Since Bert was the only senior on the team, l we hope our returning letter winners will lead the track girls to a l successful season next year. The baseball team, under the direction of Coach Wes Porter, again had to contend with the weatherman as well as the opposing teams. The Braves were rained out of six games and finished with a regular season record of 6 wins and 6 losses. The Braves started the season with a 10-0 shutout of Austin as Kevin Jackson pitched a 3-hitter and Mark McKinley led the hitting with a home run and a single. Robert Sampson followed with a one-hit, 5-0 victory over Milltown as Alan Zumstein slammed a home run. Borden suffered three conference losses before downing Henryville 3-0 on a 2-hit pitching performance by Kevin Jackson. Mark McKinley collected 2 doubles and Gerald Blalock and Mark Cavins figured in the scoring with timely singles. The Braves second conference victory came at the expense of Orleans 4-3 as Mark McKinley rapped 3 singles, Kevin Jackson and Rick Schleicher each had 2, and Richard Eve drove in the winning run with a double. Kevin Jackson started on the mound and was relieved in the third inning by Richard Eve, who gained the pitching victory. The Braves clinched the win with a four run seventh inning, highlighted by Mark McKinleyis two run single. Leading the hitting attack in the game was Jeff Callam with three singles and Mark McKinley with two. The Braves were pitted against Silver Creek in the semi-final round. The title of Mr. or Miss BHS is the highest honor bestowed on a senior by the student body and is based on all phases of life at BHS. Recipients of this honor must display the qualities of leadership, loyalty, character, patriotism and school spirit. To say these two students are leaders is an understatement. Together they held four presidencies. Mark led the Senior class and the Student Council, while Bert directed the GAA and FHA. Active in sports, Bert showed her loyalty to BHS by being the only senior on the girls, track team. She also helped the volleyball team to have a winning season in its first year at BHS. Whether in athletics or in the classroom, Mark revealed his fine character as an example to others. He received the Lions Club Sportsmanship Trophy for basketball and was selected by the faculty to receive the Outstanding Senior Award. Much more could be said about Bert and Mark, but it can be summarized by the fact that they were exemplary of the school spirit needed by students to make a high school rise above mediocrity. No matter what the school activity, they were participating to help make it a success. Mark and Bert have truly typified what it means to be Mr. and Miss BHS. The llPride of Southern Indianali is the new name chosen for the Borden High School Band. Under the direction of Philip Pitt, the band went on an award winning Spree this year. Starting the year off right, the band won a Superior Rating and Sweepstakes at the State Marching Contest held at Salem. They followed this by winning second place at the Tell City Invitational, second place in the Western Kentucky University Homecoming Parade, first place at the Tobaccoland Marching Contest in Mayfield, Kentucky, and a 11 rating at the State Concert Contest held at Madison. Because of these ratings the band was invited to compete in the Festival of Champions Contest sponsored by Moore High School of Louisville. The Borden band was the only Indiana band invited to participate. Even though busy with all these contests, the band still found time to raise money for additional uniforms, to entertain at ball games, and to give their annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Thanks to Mr. Pitt and the dedicated band members, the band had another successful year and maintained their number one standing. Band Director Philip Pitt and Senior Jacket Recipient Debbie Beckett.
