Borden placed all seven of its winners in the top ten including the first six to cross the finish line. Consider these accomplishments by this talented dedicated crew. They were undefeated in dual, tri- angular, and all regular season meets and obtained a season record of 89 wins against only 9 losses. In one triangular meet at Silver Creek, Borden placed the first six runners with the other two runners in the top ten. Losing only a few places in invitational meets and the sectional, the following is a breakdown of their perfor- mance in these meets: lst of 10 teams at Shoals lst of 6 at Paoli 2nd of 15 at North Harrison 3rd of 13 at Ieffersonville 3rd of 12 at Providence lst of 20 in Thomas Jefferson Junior Race 2nd of 22 in T. J.'s Senior race 4th of 28 in Columbus Sectional According to coach Charles Jackson the season's highlight was defeating ALL schools in our southern Indiana area with the exception of Madison, Provi- dence, Salem: and Seymour. Consider THAT you non-bel'ievers in BHS Cross Country. Luck, you say? Tell that to the dedicated boys who ran 600 miles and gave up sleep for early Saturday morning practice runs. No, luck is not involved in a cross country win. Cross Country success depends upon dedicated individuals combining their efforts with the effort of a dedicated coach to achieve a TEAM win. Selected as Most Valuable Cross Country Runner not only for BHS, but also for the entire Lost River Conference, Bill Eurton capped a fine career by bring- ing home seven trophies and three medals. In addition to being on the All-Conference team, Billy made All- Invitational in every invitational in which Borden par- ticipated, and holds the 2 122 mile course record for a senior runner with a 13:04 time. But it takes more than one runner to have a great cross country team. Borden's cross country team had talent to spare. Every Borden runner made All-Conference except Mark Ooley who was plagued with illness at mid-season. Rickey Graf, who holds the 2 mile and 2 122 mile course records for a junior runner with times of 10:13 and 13:10 resPectively, was also All-lnvitational in every meet. Bob Koerber holds the 2 mile and 2 1l2 mile course records for a sophomore with times of 10: 10:46 and 14:10 re5pectively. Kenny Alexander, Randy Graf, Mike Stumler, and Gerald Blalock were All-Invitational in the Shoals and Paoli meets. After turning a 23 point third quarter deficit into a '75-'70 overtime vic- tory against English in the second game of the season, the Braves' fans were encouraged about the season. But things just would not fall into place for the Braves until after Christmas break when they won four games in a row. This feat had not been accomplished in five years. The streak was broken in the last game of the season in a tough game with Madison Shawe. This setback, however, did not dim the Braves' spirit; in- stead, they went into the Floyd Central Sectional with .high hopes of beating Salem. In what was probably the best matched game of the sectional, the Braves led at half-time, were down by 14 points at the third quar- ter mark, and roared back to within two points with just under a minute remaining in the game. Much to the despair of the team and their fans, the dreams of winning that elusive sectional game were shattered again as the final scoreboard read 80-85 in favor of Salem. Leading scorers for the season were senior Bill Eurton and sophomore Robert Sampson. Bill reached double figures 16 times during the season with a game high of 24 points and an average of 13. 9 points per game. Robert, averaging 13.6 points a game, scored in double figures 17 times with a 28 point season high. Seniors Bobby Allen, Bill Burton, Tim Thomas, and Mike Wilcher will be missed tremendously next year, but Coach Arnold looks forward to the future with what he calls a good group of sophomores and freshmen and an experienced group of juniors. He believes that next year the Braves will have the first winning Coach Arnold flanked by his statisticians , Alan Zumstein; and Steve Kirchgessner, discusses game strategy. season in ten years. JUNIOR VARSITY: As the season started , it looked as if the J . V. '5 might improve upon last year's record. Due to inconsistent play and poor free throw shooting , however, this thought did not materialize. Even though things did not seem to go their way, the J. V. '5 did not surrender but kept their record on the winning side at 11-9. The highlight of the J. V. season was avenging last year's double overtime loss to Pekin Eastern. Having one of their better defensive nights, the J. V. 's also did well on the offensive side, shooting 50070 from the field. Coach Carter believes these boys will be a real asset to the Varsity next year if, they keep up their hustle and determination. FRESHMEN: Getting off to a slow start did not dis- . courage the Freshmen who worked hard and came back to defeat such teams as Floyd Central, Salem, Pekin . Eastern, Henryville, and New Washington. As the sea- son progressed the boys had showed great improvements ..- 34;! .3? in working the ball, playing defense and hustling. This was evident at the Silver Creek game. Determi- nation and hustle plus the hot shooting of Roger Harbe- son, who hit 9 of 11 from the field in the second half, put the Freshmen back into a game which saw them down 15 points at half time. They tied the score with 17 seconds remaining, but as luck would have it. they were defeated by two points on a last second shot. The Freshmen finished their season with an even 5-5 mark and showed they are good prospects for the J. V. and Varsity squads next year. EIGHTH GRADE: The eighth grade finished their sea.- son with an outstanding 11-3 record, defeating teams considered to be powerful in their own right. They competed in the Charlestown Eighth Grade Tourney and defeated St. Michael's 52-31 , in the first game , but were defeated by Charlestown, 37-35, in the quar- ter finals. However, the team received the Sports- manship Tr0phy and Danny Rowan was named to the All Tournament team. SEVENTH GRADE: Although the seventh grade did not have a winning season accord 4-81, they played hard every game and showed much improvement by the end of the season. In the West Washington Seventh Grade Tourney, the young Braves won the consolation trophy by defeating Pekin Eastern 48-26. David McKinley received the Most Valuable Player Trophy for the tour- ney. Coach Lockmund feels this will be a fine ball club next year with added experience. 52 t 75. $ Overtime BORDEN OPPONENTS New Washington ------ 61 English ----------- 70 North Harrison ------- 95 Tunnelton --------- 7 2 Eastern ........... 7 8 Marengo ---------- 76 S outh Central ------- 60 Milltown ---------- 5 9 Salem ........... 80 West Washington ------ 66 Orleans ........... 70 Lanesville --------- 8 6 Crothersville -------- 64 West Washington ------ 53 Leavenworth -------- 68 Heltonville --------- 7 7 Henryville --------- 74 Fayetteville -------- 49 Medora ........... 5 0 Mad ison Shawe ------- '7 9 Salem tsectionan ------ 85 Cheerleader Spirii 31m m-gvrgmH-T'w. r6295 +7.4; 1 ; - A . 1' Swan. i 1 VARSITY: Darlene Koetter, Captain Stephanie Blackman Kathy Lewis Kenny Alexander Melinda Lee Debbie Wilson JUNIOR VARSITY: Kyna Miller. Borden's athletic program has made great strides in the past few years in winning conference championships in cross country, baseball, and a baseball sectional. This year the athletic pro- gram made another giant step towards a program for which we can all be proud. Girls' Track was added this year and a total of Sixteen girls braved criticism to help start the program. Consider these obstacles: no previous experience, no uniforms until the season was finished. These girls didn't even have any sweats to keep warm when they practiced in the rain, which they did! 'Despite these obstacles, some students, who did not understand that Championships are the result of many years of experience and improvements in the pro- gram, criticized the team for not winning. -But the vast majority of the students realized that what was really important was that these girls were out there try- ing. They were giving Borden its first taste of girls' athletics, Be patient BHS! In time the program will be competitive. The yearbook staff looks forward to next year's season and wishes to congratulate these girls and their coach, Iaunice Dunn, for a job well done. One is tempted to take this page of the yearbook and say, Canceled due to rain. The Braves were plagued this year by persistent rain which when it wasn't raining out a game, it was raining out practice. It is extremely difficult for a team to per- fect skills which they have not practiced. DeSpite this , the team managed a 6-9 record for the season. An inexperienced pitching staff coupled with batters who dropped far below their last year's batting aver- ages yielded a disappointing season for the Braves. As if the weather was not enough of a headache, the Braves learned of their switch to the powerful Jeff sec- tional. Thinking they had gotten a lucky draw , the st Henryville, a team they Unfortunately and allowed Braves were paired again had beaten soundly in regular season. the Henryville team rose to the occasion only one hit to Gerald Blalock to spell the end of a frustrating season for the Braves. beson, Kevin Jackson, Jay Jordan , Charley Hurst, Coach Jim Arnold, Manager Steve King, Lonnie Wilson, Robert Sampson, Mark Alan Zumstein, Jeff Callam, Manager, John Schleicher. BHS: During his four years at BHS , Mike followed an academic course of study. In his first two years, he participated in basketball, cross country, and track, but concentrated on the latter two in his last two years. Mike's dependability gained him the lead male role in the Senior c1a$ play. Whether running cross country or working in the library as a student assistant, Mike displayed his loyalty to BHS and this made him the students' pick for Mr. BHS. MISS BHS: Serving as President of the Senior class, Betty revealed her leadership ability by ably directing the many class activities. Although active in GAA, StudentACouncil, and the Booster Club, Betty also found time to participate in' the Senior class play and to dedicate much of her spare'f time to the yearbook. Betty's school spirit made her a natural choice in the selection of Miss BHS by the student body.
