Borden High School Borden, Indiana Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Dederich ..4 MN Ht U. o'N! IIHL .-----$- -,-4 While attempting to pick one special person to dedicate our 1972 annual to, we found that there is more than just one person who deserves this honor, so our task was somewhat difficult. There was one person though, that we have all grown to love and marvel at. She has the stamina to put up with all our teasing and yet tease us back; the courage to face us everyday and still smile. She has been a tower of strength for when we have wanted to give up and said, It'll never work, she said Of course it will, and she showed us what patience means because with her help it always did work. Many times when we knew what we had finished would do but could be better. She told us it was good which gave us confidence so that we believed in our- selves and strived to to do our best. But we were never told that she went back on her own and made it perfect for us too. She has built us up but never let us down, and all of the honors we could give her would never be enough to re- pay what she has given to us. We hope that this one small honor ShOWS in some small way our sincerest appreciation and thanks for being the wonder- ful person that you are. Even though we'll never be able to fully repay you Miss Nicholson, we hope that you'll accept this honor with the class of '7 2's love. Special Thanks r : l n n 7 a u m H ' H H I; n. I? 1-. ' 10 II J! ll 24 ' '. IN .N m II During our twelve years of schooling, there are so many people who help us and are deserving of special recognition, sbutithis is an impossible task. However,. there are four people this year to whom we feel a special thanks is greatly deserved. The first is Loretta Roberson who is retiring after forty- two years of helping students. How do you give an adequate thank- you to someone who has dedicated her life to education? Mrs. loretta may be retired but she will never be forgotten by all those she has taught. Next, our sponsors, Charles Graninger and Juanice Dunn, have helped us in countless ways. We would never have made it if it had not been for their tireless dedication. They looked out? for our welfare even when We were too unconcerned to look out for ourselves. We will always remember their patience, kind- ness, and dedicated service tohour class. Lastly, Jack Lawson, janitor and friend, is retiring this year. A member of the silent force, he deserves our special thanks. What we messed up, Jack fixed up. We're sorry we kept you so busy Jack. Borden High School Is . . . A Sectional Crown. Sports at Borden High School are on an upward trend. This year has been a good one for Borden teams. Three conference championships and a sectional title certainly indicate an upswing in the Braves athletic program. The Braves missed winning the new Lost River All- Conference trophy by a mere half peint. When the 1972 Echoes went to press the baseball team was the proud owner of the Salem Sectional Title, and anxiously awaiting their up- coming battle with Jeff in the regional. . We do not know what will happen in that regional, but no matter what the outcome, these boys have made their mark on Borden athletics. They will forever remain the first team to bring home a sectional championship! CON- GRATULATIONS TEAM! SECTIONAL SCORES: FIRST ROUND ------ Borden- - - 5 Eastern ------ 2 . What was ex- pected to be a great Borden season ended on a somewhat dismal '7 - 13 note as the Braves were constantly hin- dered by poor shooting and frequent injuries. However, the season was not wasted by any means. The 86-80 victory over a highly touted North Harrison team was certainly the highlight of the season, but there were others. Yes, the Braves did play up to their potential in some games as they crushed such teams. as Marengo, South Central, and Medora and nearly defeated powerhouses Pekin Eastern, Lanesville, Madison Shawe. Certainly a highlight and also a very rare occasion in a small school is having two Honorable Men- tion All-Staters on its basketball team. All of Borden is proud of Mike Sizemore and Sid Sampson, our own representatives to the most elite athletic group in the entire state of Indiana. A special part of this account must be used to praise the tremendous job that new head coach James Arnold did with the Braves. Using what must have been one of the youngest varsity basketball teams in Borden history tthere were four sopho- mores and a freshman on the teaml, Coach Arnold instilled a winning attitude into these young athletes that will stay with them not only in basketball season but also for the rest of their lives. Statisticians Darrell Eicher and Jerry Helbig. Jerry also wrote the sports reviews for the Echoes. Cross Country Team Made History With Two C onferen ce Championships! Proud Cross Country runners display their trophies won in two conference championships. 1 9 71 Cross C0 1111 try Season An excellent regular season plus tw0 unbelievable victories in conference meets equalled one of the most remarkable cross- country season that Borden has ever known. The Braves, under the tutlage of new head coach Charles J ackson, crushed weaker teams such as Pekin Eastern and Henryville; and nearly defeated some of the best teams in the area such as Floyd Central and Silver Creek. The regular season readied the young Braves for the coming conference meets. An aura of confidence surrounded Borden's youthful two-milers as they prepared themselves both mentally and physically'for the Dixie- Monon and Lost River Conferences. They prepared themselves beyond imagination as seven Borden runners finished in the top eight positions giving the Dixie-Monon its first conference winner in its his- tory with a perfect score. It would have been almost impossible even to attempt an encore in the Lost River Conference, yet the Braves nearly pulled it off. Missing only third place, five Borden runnners finished in the top six positions. The Braves were thrown into huge Columbus Sectional to compete against such teams as Seymour, Providence, and Jeffersonville. Yet Coach Jackson's runners did re- markably well as they finished twelfth in a field of twenty-two. Borden defeated much larger schools like Clarksville, Scottsburg, Austin, Silver Creek, and Brownstown. There are many reasons for the team's amazing success; talent, a different coach with a different system, and a strong competitive spirit. Yet the most important reason was the boys themselves. They dedicated themselves entirely to the sport in which they wanted to 'excell. Long, tiring, endless miles of practice is the prime in- gredient for a championship cross-country team. The boys sacrificed most of their free time in order to achieve their goal, and they were successful. They are each a credit to their school and families and have gained respect from others not only as athletes, but as dedicated, outstanding young men. During Honors Day Ceremonies, Mr. J ackson presents conference awards to the members of his championship team. .1. xr. ?:qgtg? h .In TRACK TEAM: SITTING: Bruce Brown, Water Crane, Paul Ehringer, Kris Smith, Jerry Wright, Bob Koer- ber, John Schleicher. But the name of the sport is track-and-field, and the latter severly hurt the Braves' chances of having an undefeat- ed season. The Braves held their own in track but they were lacking in depth and experience in the field events. The Braves had some outstanding individual performances this year. Bill Burton broke the school record in the mile with a time of 4:43. 5 and was unbeaten in the mile run during the season. Bill also made the All Conference Track Team in both the Dixie-Monon and LLST. River Conferences. Other members of the Dixie-Monon All Conference team were Randy Graf t2 milel; Mike Stumler who set a school record in the 440 with a 0:53. 7 time; Ricky Graf with a record time of 2:04.3 in the 880; and the mile relay team of Mike Stumler, Ricky Graf, Tim Thomas, Kenny Alexander, which set a school record of 3:43. Next year's team will consist mostly of lettermen as the Braves lose only three members of this year's team by graduation. Coach Charles Jackson has done a tremendous job with these young boys and because the team of 1973 will be so much stronger and more exper- ienced, the chances are that the Braves will vastly improve their somewhat weak field team to be one of the best track- and-field teams in the county.
