JONES Trustee of Wood Township School Principal 2 PRINCIPALiS MESSAGE Mr. Harry A. Jones, Principal MEDITATION S I have the honor of having had the longest tenure of any principal to serve Borden High School. One of the nicest things about this job is the opportunity it affords to talk with young people about their problems and their futures. Nothing is more challenging than facing enthusiastic boys and girls. If during the 30 years I have been connected with youth Ihave been able to encourage them to seek higher education, I am thank- ful. If during this time I have been able in a small way to lead them by word and in example to be better citizens and better men and women, I shall always be grateful. Teaching has been a labor of love for me and I know that my interest in boys and girls will not end with my retirement from the teaching profession. HIGH SCHOOL FACU LTY MRS. D. , mil novecientos sesenta y cuatro. nib; '7 SENIOR CLASS. PROPHECY l Soothsayers Frances, Brenda, and Karen predict Senior happenings. Dancing, Music, and Fun! The annual Mardi Gras has begun. Let us venture to New Orleans to find out who attends this gala event. It has been twenty years since the Seniors of '64 left Borden High School. --'-'---.-.-u -uu. .--.-n-......-... -..-.u........ Now we journey to the Schleichy-Knuk, one of the most famous night clubs in New Orleans, to see two of the more talented members of the Senior C1ass--Steve Schleicher and Kent Knuckles. They not only own the night club but head the fabulous combo with their fine guitar playing. Many cities are represented at this annual event. In the distance we can see one of the signs of these cities. As we draw near we can make out the lettering. Why, it's the Chamber of Commerce from Salem, Indiana, and who's the head of it! Our own Jane Ann Hunt! After talking to her we find she gained most of her knowledge about the city from her many trips to Salem in her Senior year at Borden. While walking about we casually pick up the local newspaper, SMILEY'S GAZETTE. The word Smiley seemed to ring a bell so we hurriedly looked for the editor of this fine newspaper. Yes, our hunch was right. There in big black letters was the name of Alan Wagner. This great city gets more fascinating to us as we learn more about it. While strolling down Main Street we see a huge gymnasium for physical fitness. As we approach we can see the proprietor's name. Imagine! It's Ernest Raab. It seems after graduating from Borden High he was determined to better him- self. And so he did! N. .r- 4. ..- - am a- nu- WWWWWMWMmde W wmmxumAvmnnxmt-mmmlm We decide to leave our car in a nearby parking lot. Upon driving in we find the owner to be none other than Terry Akers. We stop to chat with him and find he has been very prosperous. He now owns a string of parking lots throughout the United States. We find he got his know-how when he and a couple of classmates opened their own parking lot in their Senior year at Borden. 42 -u-n..-.-...-:u-u-nu-u-T..m.-.uu -un..-..--auuu.-u-. Speaking about cars, we hear that this city has a world famous race track. The name? Hurst's Speed- way. Motto? Drive more, live less. It seems Rita Hurst is still at it. tWe learn that she gained most of her experience in her Senior year at BordenJ Main Street wouldn't be complete without a local barber shop and here we come upon one. As we enter we find Richard Banner busily at his job. No wonder the price of wigs has gone up! We walk on down the street and meet another senior, Robert Scott. Robert has a job, but he also has a problem. It seems he can't break a habit carried over from his school life. He never shows up for work. We see another familiar face, now. Why! It's Bobby Temple. It seems as though he's a busy person. He's now the manager of the Jerry's Drive-In in New Albany. He decided to quit wasting gas running back and forth and just stay there. A shipment of logs just came in. There's something written on the side of the truck. As it comes closer we see it's Barry Martin. He now has his own log mill in which he made his first million and is now trying for his second. And now look who's coming down the street. Why it's Susie Wagoner. After high school Susie decided to get married and be a housewife. Well she did and she now has her own basketball team--five little boys. Night approaches and the lights start flashing. We have heard that there is a sawmill located here that has the biggest neon lights in the world. Naturally, we want to view this sight, so after finding the loca- tion we were off. Yes, the lights were big! But not half as big as our surprise! Guess who owns this lay out? Our own Melva Jacobi. It seems she decided to follow in her Dad's footsteps. And of course, we always knew she'd get her name in lights. Melva tells us she's married to--yes, you guessed it--that famous world champion basketball star, Mike Carter. Mike attributes his skill from his high school experience. No city would be complete without its many doctors. We now see a very enterprising one named June Martin. June is now a very successful neck specialist. We learn that she decided to take this road after her many neck experiences in high school. There are many representatives from foreign countries here. We now run into Raymonda McKinley. It seems she now represents Cuba and all of its inhabitants. Through her magnificent work the U. S. and Cuba are now very good friends. We mustn't forget Donald Bower for he too has found his goal. He is now owner of an enormous brewery. Be careful and don't drink up your profits, Donald. As we leave this fair city, we hope that our future friendships will be as long and lasting as those of the past. And that everyone will agree that success comes to those who are worthy of it. TOP: James Jackson, Boyd Wright, and Bob Rehmel. The Borden High School Cross Country Team, under the guidance of Mr. Wes Porter, made a strong showing during the past season. The Berries participated in three dual meets and three triangular meets during the regular season. James Jackson proved to be the Berries most consistent runner as he placed first in one dual meet, second in a dual meet, and second in a cross country match involving three schools. Boyd Wright gained a second place position in a threeway meet and Johnny Miller sped his way to a first place victory in a triangular contest. Borden finished strong in the Southern Monom Conference meet at Salem as they powered their way to a second place team finish. James Jackson, finishing in third position individually, turned in the best time of the season for a Borden runner as he ran the two mile course in 11:02. With all the team members being underclassmen, the prospects for the next year appear to be ex- cellent for the Borden cross country squad. FRONT: John Lee, Robert Scott, Jim Rockey, Steve Schleicher. MIDDLE: Butch Whitson, Mike Carter, Terry Akers, Terry Smith, Russ Akers. BACK: Coach A. J. McKinley, Torn Livingston, Jerry Fordyce, Mike Dougherty. The Borden baseball team opened the season with an impressive '7-5 victory over the Silver Creek Dragons. This was the first baseball victory over Silver Creek in the history of our school. Robert Scott pitched the Berries to victory as he struck out 12 Dragons. The Berries downed Tunnelton 11-0 for their first 8. M. A. C. victory. Mike Carter fanned 8 in posting the win, and also provided the big offensive blow with a grand-slam home run. Borden was unable to gain another victory in their remaining four games. Robert Scott struck out 12 against Pekin but the Berries were downed 6-0. West Washington scored an unearned run in the last inning to nip the Borden nine 5-4. Fayetteville and Borden battled to a 6-6 tie before the game was called because of darkness. The Berries rallied for 3 runs in the final inning to gain the tie. Steve Schleicher's triple sparked the comeback. Medora, the S. M.A. C. champion, defeated the Berries 10-4 in the final game of the season. Major letter winners were Terry Akers, Mike Carter, Robert Scott, and Steve Schleicher, Seniors; Jerry Fordyce, Tom Livingston, and Butch Whitson, Juniors; Russ Akers, Mike Dougherty, and Terry Smith, Sophomores; and Jim Rockey, Freshman. l1 , H U A , A . , MA A UnlhanuldxnlI: I.-7WH:H.HI;, .ul.,.il.n..ll A L;. The Berries started the hardwood season with an impressive 60-51 opening victory over Tunnel- ton. Boyd Wright with 18 points and Mike Carter with 1'7 led the Berries' attack. New Washington stopped the Berries with a spine-tingling 73-72 decision in the second game with James Jackson pitching in 20 points and Boyd Wright adding 19. Lexington became the second victory with Mike Carter scoring 31 points. Borden could not seem to win the close games as Pekin squeezed out a hard fought 69-64 victory as Jerry Fordyce scored 19 for the Berries. Heltonville won a close decision in a 68-64 double-overtirne encounter with Mike Carter racking up 24 points. South Central felt the scoring power of the Borden quintet as James Jackson scored 22 and Jerry Fordyce 18 in a 80-68 romp. The Berries won their second straight in downing Freetown 78-62. James Jackson and Mike Carter shared scoring honors with 23 points each. In the Holiday Tourney at Salem, Borden defeated Tunnelton for the second time as Jerry Fordyce scored 21, and Mike Carter added 23 points to his collection as the Berries took a 70-61 defeat by Marengo. Borden pulled a big upset in downing highly favored Milltown by a 69-53 margin. Terry with, just moved up from the Junior Varsity, scored 20 points to pace the victory. Mike Carter canned 29 points as the Berries dropped a hot close one, this time a 73-70 loss to Cortland. The first victory on an opponent's floor was gained at Lanesville as James Jackson scored 22 and Terry Smith 19 in a 70-59 win. Still unable to win the close contests, Morgan Twp. downed the Berries 62-56 as Mike Carter scored 17 and Henryville nosed out a 56-54 overtime decision. 1963-64 SCHEDULE Tunnelton New Washington Georgetown Lexington Pekin Medora Heltonville South Central Freetown Tunnelton Pekin Marengo Milltown Cortland Lanesville Morgan Twp.
