Sparked by achieving first class and superior national and state press ratings, the staff of 25 worked diligently to produce another historical, photographic record of merit. Editor-in-Chief Anne Budge and Associ- ate Editor Anne McCormac checked closely with head photographer Steve Blanchard and other staffers to choose representative pictures and to create attractive designs and layouts. Journeying to Portland in April for the National Scholastic Press Association Journalism Conference were 6 staff mem- bers and advisor, Mrs. Lorraine Gunder- sen, and consultant, Mrs. Marge Bue, along with 6 staff members from the Sena- tor. Idaho State and University of Idaho Journalism Conferences also stimulated exciting yearbook ideas for the staffers who attended the fall and spring sessions. Setting the scene for the great orange and Christmas candle sale was the coldest winter weather ever recorded in the Boise valley. Salesmen knocked on hundreds of doors to make money for the learning con- ferences. Selling mugs with the Borah crest also helped to provide needed funds.

Borah's band received acclaim in Ruffles and Flourishes, the National Band Magazine as a marching band with one of the finest marching shows in the Western states. The musicians were pleased in receiving honorable mention to the top 20 bands in the Nation. A great repertoire combined with flashy drill work led the Lions to five consecutive championships in District lll compe- tition at Boise State College. Capturing both the AA class and Sweepstakes Awards, the total band of 140 playing members, 24 flags, 4 twirlers, 2 drum majors and an 80 girl drill team performed again under the direction of James Perkins. The band, which appeared on National television, also rated in Division 1 for Band and Orchestra in the Pacific Northwest. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the year was being selected as one of the top 10 bands to be invited to the International Band Competition in Brussels, Belgium. Unfortu- nately, the school board turned down the request to go out of the country. The symphonic Band was chosen from ranks of the march- ing band. Members performed several concerts during the spring. Forty-five orchestra members once again proved they understood quality and percision of the music. They per- formed at the fall concert and Southern Idaho Conference clinic in Caldwell. They also presented Christmas programs and special Pomp and Circumstance music for graduation ceremonies. BELOW: Band adviser Mr. James Perkins smiles proudly in anticipation of the cherished trophy.
