Language Arts at its best is a rich pot- purri of both the past and the present. In keeping with this spirit more new English courses with an expanded approach increased student choices. Sophomores selected trom a variety of ten new 9 weeks mini courses ranging from those with an emphasis on native Americans, mysteries, man's relation to his environment, or Puritans, to the United States' Western experience. A team taught American Studies pro- gram stressed history and literature. This humanities course was open for the first time to sophomores who had taken the American Studies program in the 9th grade. Juniors chose Mythology, How to Write, Shakespeare, or Romantic Literature from among other 9 weeks courses. Universal Themes in World Literature gave both juniors and seniors new choices. The Advanced Humanities class explored philosophy, art, and read and dis- cussed several Greek and modern plays. Debaters won the sweepstakes' trophy and 1st place in the senior division at the University of Idaho. Journalism students took their usual quota of both state and national awards for excellence in newspa- per and yearbook production.
