From Boonville Academy to Boonville High School has been a rich, rewarding experience for the entire Boonville Community. Watching the growth and de- velopment of this educational system, the citizens of Boonville have taken pride in its strides of advance- ment and achievement. Thus the Annual Staff has turned the SPOTLIGHT to years of Boonville history in the ’’Search For Our Heritage” in grateful appre- ciation for the interest and concern shown for Boon- ville High. But we have also looked ahead, hopefully, for those younger citizens who will find their places at Starmount, and then in the community and world. We hope to have given everyone something that they can truly enjoy and appreciate for this is our last ’’thank you” to Boonville as a high school and also our final ’’goodbye”. A Search For Our Heritage According to legend, Daniel Boone once camped at a spring about 300 feet west of the present Baptist Church. The c r o s s r o ad s settlement established here was known as Leonora. A post office was established under the name of Boon- ville on November 20, 1857. Perhaps the rea- son Boonville grew up just where it did was due to the fact that two main roads crossed here. One of these roads led from Mt. Nebo to Jones- ville, and the other one led from the ford of the Yadkin River at Crutchfield to Yadkinville.” This house, opposite Boonville Farm Equipment Company, is the oldest house in town. It was built by Dr. N. B. Dozier, the town's first doctor. It was later occupied for many years by Jacob Spencer. The oldest continuously-operated firm in town is Day's Dry Goods Store. It was started in 1894 by Foard W. Day, and inherited by his son, R. Carlyle Day in 1939. The Commercial and Savings Bank opened here in 1911. 4
