is to have done it.” Class of 1938 The first SPOTLIGHT was published in 1939. War was raging in Europe and Asia during the early 1940's, and soon many of these boys would be putting their books aside and taking up guns to fight for their country. But when they posed for these pictures, there were ball games to be won, and win they did. The Beta Club of Boonville High School - 1938 Basketball Team, 1942 - Undefeated Football Team - 1943-44 The WSJS tournament had been discontinued for the duration of the war, but these Boon- ville boys were awarded a trophy for being undefeated in basketball. They set a record by winning 14 games. The starting five in- cluded Donald Casstevens, Henry Shore, and the Pardue brothers - Gilbert, Bernard, and Thomas. This record was not broken until 1964. 13

“The reward of a thing well done 1937 Boonville School Faculty 1937 Senior Class 1934 - Girls Basketball Team In 1937 Boonville Girls again won the Yadkin County Championship. In 1939 Mr. Albert Martin coached these girls into a championship team. They won the Anston-Salem Journal-Sentinel championship title. 12

“Our todays and yesterdays Many improvemen s had been made in transporta- tion by 1943. Os aid Parker poses with one of many buses that transported children to Yadkin County schools. The Senior Class of 1947 chose Jay Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Martin, class mascot. The little girl is Sarah Pardue. Baseball Team - 1943-44 After World War II ended, many of our boys returned to the classroom to finish their high school education and to win trophies for BHS. This 1946 team was the first one in Yadkin County to win a state champion- ship. Team mascot is Edward Lakey, who, in 1965, coached the boys basketball team to victory in state competition. This team was coached by Grover Brown who was named Yadkin County Coach of the Year, 1967. | -1 ir f ?rrt 14
