“Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers.” In 1958 the Golden Shield Honor Society was founded in honor of Professor Pardue. The By-laws state that the purpose of the society is to give special recognition to those boys and girls of the Boonville High School who are good and worthy students and who meet the standard of excellence required for membership as set forth in the By-laws. - A 2» In the school year 1924-25 the first transportation provided school children in Yadkin County was at the Boonville School. The bus was driven by Fred Hobson who is shown here with his passengers. Mr. H. F. Pardue In 1913 the name Yadkin Valley Institute was dropped and the name of the school became Boonville High School. It was at this time that Professor H. F. Pardue, a man who had received his secondary education at the Academy became princi- pal. He served in this capacity from 1913-1926, a period of 13 years. Boon- ville High School was accredited by the North Carolina Department of Education in 1922, the first school in Yadkin County to be accredited. In 1918 the first building of brick construction was erected. This building constitutes the front part of what is the elementary building at the present time. The transition from a private to a public school took place over a few short years and took place under the leadership of Professor H. F. Pardue. 9

There were three literary societies con- nected with the school. The Adelphi Liter- ary Society was organized at Siloam in 1893. Its objects were to stimulate an interest in literature, to encourage oratory, to culti- vate the reasoning faculties and to acquaint its members with parliamentary laws and usages. When Professor Horn left Siloam and came to Boonville, many Adelphi boys came with him, and the society was re- organized in 1894. Among the officers in 1898 were M. Q. Snow, J. W. Mosley, C. H. Stone, A. B. Weisner, A. C. Hurt, H. F. Pardue, and W. L. Newton. Officers - Adelphi Literary Society Officers - The Clio Society When Professor Horn came to Boonville, he also brought several of the boys who were members of the Philomathean Society. The purpose of this society was very similar to the Adelphi Society. Among the members were G. H. Hasten, W. C. Linville, R. L. Nelson, F. E. Stafford, H. J. Briggs, J. A. Dwiggins, J. C. Smith, and J. M. Frye. “A moment’s thinking is an hour in words.” Every young lady of The Yadkin Valley Insti- tute was urged to take an interest in the workings of the Clio Society. It met weekly to cultivate the powers of expression through recitations and essay writing and to give attention to singing and instrumental music. Officers were listed as Miss Bessie Wood- house, Miss Louzana Long, Miss Carrie Huff, Miss Nannie Douthit, Miss Ethel Bur- rus, Miss Cora LeGrande, and Miss Ina Davis. 8 Officers - The Philomathean Society
