THE 1967 SPOTLIGHT Published by the Annual Staff of Boonville High School Boonville, North Carolina From Boonville Academy to Boonville High School has been a rich, rewarding experience for the entire Boonville Community. Watching the growth and de- velopment of this educational system, the citizens of Boonville have taken pride in its strides of advance- ment and achievement. Thus the Annual Staff has turned the SPOTLIGHT to years of Boonville history in the ’’Search For Our Heritage” in grateful appre- ciation for the interest and concern shown for Boon- ville High. But we have also looked ahead, hopefully, for those younger citizens who will find their places at Starmount, and then in the community and world. We hope to have given everyone something that they can truly enjoy and appreciate for this is our last ’’thank you” to Boonville as a high school and also our final ’’goodbye”. TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword............2 History.............4 Faculty............29 Classes............35 ENTERING BOONVILLE INC. 1895 Athletics. Activities Sponsors. 2 STORY 3 A Search For Our Heritage According to legend, Daniel Boone once camped at a spring about 300 feet west of the present Baptist Church. The c r o s s r o ad s settlement established here was known as Leonora. A post office was established under the name of Boon- ville on November 20, 1857. Perhaps the rea- son Boonville grew up just where it did was due to the fact that two main roads crossed here. One of these roads led from Mt. Nebo to Jones- ville, and the other one led from the ford of the Yadkin River at Crutchfield to Yadkinville.” This house, opposite Boonville Farm Equipment Company, is the oldest house in town. It was built by Dr. N. B. Dozier, the town's first doctor. It was later occupied for many years by Jacob Spencer. The oldest continuously-operated firm in town is Day's Dry Goods Store. It was started in 1894 by Foard W. Day, and inherited by his son, R. Carlyle Day in 1939. The Commercial and Savings Bank opened here in 1911. 4 Men close to the soil are close to God. The principal industry has always been farming. The people of the community today follow the example set by their ancestors in leading a quiet and unas- suming life, and in taking pride in their homes, churches, and their school. Miss Mary Lynn Coram, Class of 1964, is pictured with a cow from the herd of her father, Ralph Coram. There are many modern dairies in our community and Boonville boys and girls are always to be found among the winners at cattle shows. The growing of tobacco is still one of the chief means of income of the community. Here mem- bers of the Woodruff family are shown harvesting tobacco. The Boonville Motor Company, operated by H. J. Steelman, was the first Ford dealer in Yadkin County. Tobacco has always been a leading money-maker in Yadkin County. Jim Speer operated a sizeable tobacco factory duringthe 1890's. Employing about ten persons, he manufactured plug tobacco. He delivered it while traveling over the country with horse and buggy. Abner Davis and Isaac Shugart also manufactured tobacco in the early 1880’s. Today Yadkin County tobacco is taken to market in Winston-Salem, where many of our citizens are employed. 5 “Good, the more communicated, Not too much is known concerning the very early days of the first secondary school here. It was the year 1887 according to the best records avail- able that the Academy opened for business in Boonville at the present site. Prior to that time a free school was operated about one-half mile west of what has since been Boonville High School. In 1891 the school took the name of Yadkin Valley Institute under the direction of Mr. R. B. Bob Horn. His chief assistant was Mr. John Allen, a Boonville native. The Institute was a boarding school for boys and girls. At one time, more than 100 students from many different parts of North Carolina were enrolled. The original building, which housed the Yadkin Valley Institute was built of wood. Additions were made from time to time as facilities became in- adequate due to an ever increasing number of pupils. In 1898 Boonville citizens donated 700 logs toward an addition to the original structure. From the beginning of the school in 1887 until 1918 the operation of the school was strictly on a private basis. All expenses were borne by funds derived from tuition fees paid by the student body. In 1918, however, the local people formed a school district, which consisted mainly of the town of Boonville with some nearby outlying areas attached and voted a local tax for the purpose of financing the operation of the school. It became a public high school as well as an elementary school with public money being used for operation. This system was supplemented, however, by students from other areas, who continued to pay a tuition fee. 6 the more abundant grows.” Room and board was provided for students at the Hotel Angel and at private homes for $6.50 per month, including washing, lights, etc. The Hotel Angel was located at the intersection north of Day's Store. This picture was made about 1909. '«tor Tflww R. a. HORf rftlNl-li'AU Probably the first principal of the Academy was a Mr. Yarborough. He was followed by a Mr. Brown from Sparta and he by Mr. Tom Watkins. Mr. R. B. Horn was head of the school for approxi- mately 12 years. Upon his departure, about the year 1903, a succession of principals followed for a period of ten or more years. From 1903 to 1913 the Yadkin Valley Institute was headed by the following men: Mr. Bright Woodhouse, a local man; a Mr. Teague, the Rev. J. J. Burch, Mr. Lee W. Truitte, the Rev. Joe Carter and Mr. Jerry Day. Professor H. F. Pardue followed as principal in 1913, Theaimof the Yadkin Valley Institute was stated in the catalogue for 1898-99 as follows: It is the aim of the school to furnish educational advantages of a high order, which shall combine thoroughness of instruction with ideas and enlarged conceptions of the duties and responsibilities of life. It is our aim to give students thorough preparation to enter col- lege and prepare those who do not for the active duties and responsibilities of life. A special feature of our school is to prepare young men and ladies to teach in the public school. Tuition ranged from $2.50 per month in the Teachers normal Depart- ment to $20.00 in the Business Department. “Make each day a critic on the last.” 7 There were three literary societies con- nected with the school. The Adelphi Liter- ary Society was organized at Siloam in 1893. Its objects were to stimulate an interest in literature, to encourage oratory, to culti- vate the reasoning faculties and to acquaint its members with parliamentary laws and usages. When Professor Horn left Siloam and came to Boonville, many Adelphi boys came with him, and the society was re- organized in 1894. Among the officers in 1898 were M. Q. Snow, J. W. Mosley, C. H. Stone, A. B. Weisner, A. C. Hurt, H. F. Pardue, and W. L. Newton. Officers - Adelphi Literary Society Officers - The Clio Society When Professor Horn came to Boonville, he also brought several of the boys who were members of the Philomathean Society. The purpose of this society was very similar to the Adelphi Society. Among the members were G. H. Hasten, W. C. Linville, R. L. Nelson, F. E. Stafford, H. J. Briggs, J. A. Dwiggins, J. C. Smith, and J. M. Frye. “A moment’s thinking is an hour in words.” Every young lady of The Yadkin Valley Insti- tute was urged to take an interest in the workings of the Clio Society. It met weekly to cultivate the powers of expression through recitations and essay writing and to give attention to singing and instrumental music. Officers were listed as Miss Bessie Wood- house, Miss Louzana Long, Miss Carrie Huff, Miss Nannie Douthit, Miss Ethel Bur- rus, Miss Cora LeGrande, and Miss Ina Davis. 8 Officers - The Philomathean Society “Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers.” In 1958 the Golden Shield Honor Society was founded in honor of Professor Pardue. The By-laws state that the purpose of the society is to give special recognition to those boys and girls of the Boonville High School who are good and worthy students and who meet the standard of excellence required for membership as set forth in the By-laws. - A 2 In the school year 1924-25 the first transportation provided school children in Yadkin County was at the Boonville School. The bus was driven by Fred Hobson who is shown here with his passengers. Mr. H. F. Pardue In 1913 the name Yadkin Valley Institute was dropped and the name of the school became Boonville High School. It was at this time that Professor H. F. Pardue, a man who had received his secondary education at the Academy became princi- pal. He served in this capacity from 1913-1926, a period of 13 years. Boon- ville High School was accredited by the North Carolina Department of Education in 1922, the first school in Yadkin County to be accredited. In 1918 the first building of brick construction was erected. This building constitutes the front part of what is the elementary building at the present time. The transition from a private to a public school took place over a few short years and took place under the leadership of Professor H. F. Pardue. 9 To live in hearts we leave behind The student body of Boonville High School in 1921. War was raging in Europe and Asia during the early 1940's, and soon many of these boys would be putting their books aside and taking up guns to fight for their country. But when they posed for these pictures, there were ball games to be won, and win they did. The Beta Club of Boonville High School - 1938 Basketball Team, 1942 - Undefeated Football Team - 1943-44 The WSJS tournament had been discontinued for the duration of the war, but these Boon- ville boys were awarded a trophy for being undefeated in basketball. They set a record by winning 14 games. The starting five in- cluded Donald Casstevens, Henry Shore, and the Pardue brothers - Gilbert, Bernard, and Thomas. This record was not broken until 1964. 13 “Our todays and yesterdays Many improvemen s had been made in transporta- tion by 1943. Approaching the midnight hour 25 Three Coins In A Fountain We Dedicate Mr. Charles Walker, teacher and coach, has earned the respect of both teachers and students at Boonville High School. He has given freely of his time to assist us not only in the class- room but also in our many activities. He has been constantly interested in and concerned with the students of our school. It is with pride and appreciation that the graduating class of 1967 dedicates this last edition of the SPOTLIGHT to Mr. Charles Walker. 26 We Appreciate Mr. Albert Martin In 1935 Mr. Albert Martin came to Boonville High School as principal. His career in education includes service as teacher, coach of both athletics and drama, and principal. Those of us who have worked with Mr. Martin are aware of the determination, the foresight, the endurance, the faith, and the trials that have car- ried through in his devotion to young people. The people of the Boonville community deeply appreciate the efforts of a man who has served us well while serving his profession faithfully. In our quest for knowledge at Boonville School many of our teachers were outstanding. Three who worked diligently to instill in us the ideals of greatness have retired in recent years.
