CLASS HISTORY In September, 1949, Boonville School was a scene of much confusion. Our enormous class of seventy-three was realizing that high school was quite different from grammar school. We soon became adjusted and found that we liked it much better. Mr. Brown was the homeroom teacher for the boys and Mr. Meyers for the girls. We elected our class officers: Edward Brown, president; Shirley Johnson, vice-president; Edward Lakey, treasurer; and Phyllis Fleming, secretary. Our sophomore year was an even greater thrill because we had the new high school building. This year we started with fifty-six members. Mr. Meyers again had the girls while Mr. Matthews had the boys. We kept our same class officers. Nothing of great importance happened except an occasional class party. We finished our so- phomore year with forty-six, losing ten. Our Junior year was under thedirection of Mrs. Reece and Mr. Walker. This yearwe had two important occasions forwhich to look forward-our banquet and our Junior Play. Our banquet, held at the CountryClub in Winston-Salem, was a grand affairand thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. It was given to us by Mr. and Mrs. Garl Stinson. Our Junior Play, Doctor's Orders , was a huge success. We were very proud of our Junior girls' and boys' basketball team because they won the school tournament, fn the spring our fingers were measured for the rings we were to receive the following fall. We elected as class officers this year: Billy Smitherman, president; Joe Reece, vice-president; Shirley Johnson, secretary; and Margaret Gwynn, treasurer. We finished our Junior year with forty-one, losing only two. Our Senior class was under the leadership of Miss Day and Mr. Meyers. We still had to have a girls' and boys' section, because we had such a large class. This year we were thrilled over the prospects of a trip to Washington. We elected Virginia Steelman and David Norman, mascots. The banquet gave us an even greater thrill this year because it was being prepared and paid for by someone else. A wonderful Christmas party given to us by Miss Day was enjoyed by everyone. Then some of our members had the privilege and responsibility of being head staff of the Annual and leadersin our Student Council. All these things made us realize that our days of high school were fast coming to an end. We hope that we have left footprints in the sand of time so that others who follow may be up and doing for the good of our school, community, and state. HISTORIAN Edward Brown CLASS PROPHECY Ten years from now I, Shirley Johnson, will be asked by Life magazine to record in full the prophecy of our class of 1953. Life will be planning a full issue on our state; our school will be used as the model high school of North Carolina. In order to do this correctly and vividly, we will be having a class party at the same old community building. Mr. Martin still says all school socials must be held there. True, we're getting old and grey, parents of many, but to him we are yet a part of the school. 1. Oh, who's that lady that's all dressed up? Oh, it's Betty Adams. They say she's making $10,000 a year as dietician of the hotel, Daniel Boone, here in Boonville. 2. Here comes Reba Adams and her attractive husband. They live on a little farm between East Bend and Boonville. 3. Who's that dignified lady? Why, it's Shirley Allen. She's a well known teacher at Draughn's Business College. 4. I found out by the grape vine that Nancy Baker and Lena Hobson are chasing soldiers with needles, since they are working in an army hospital. 5. I believe we're going to have some music by Edward Brown. He plays in a jazz band on T. V. every Wednesday night. 6. There's Roy Casstevens. They say he's been to the North Pole looking for flying saucers. 7. Who's that guy with the camera? Why, it's J. D. Cave. He's head photographer in Jane Arden. 8. There's John L. Cave talking to Mr. Martin. I almost know they are talking about basketball since John is head coach at Wake Forest. 9. I read an article in the Boonville Journal about Marie Carlton. She's Supervisor of Nurses in the Boonville Hospital. 10. Here comes Josephine Brindle Collins and her husband. Who's that tagging behind? Why, it's little Jr. 11. There sits Cora Lee Crissman with a forlorn look on her face. I guess she's still waiting for Ike to send the boys home. 12. Mr. Meyers is having his picture painted by Jimmy Davis. Jimmy just found his hidden talent. He's a well known portrait artist now. 13. I was hoping Ann Groce could be here, but I Miard on the radio that she was making a tour in London as a concert pianist. 14. Margaret Gwynn, Did you bring me a book to read? Margaret has just finished one of her most outstanding novels, In Starlight. 15. There's Morrison Gwynn. I saw in the paper where he had blown the top off his Chemistry lab, looking for a cure for a common cold. 16. My, isn't that a distinguished looking fellow in that uniform. It's Paul Hinshaw. He's a captain in the navy. 17. Come here, Clara Hobson, I would like to get a good look at that hair-do. How is your business as hair designer in California? 18. Clara just told me Denny Hobson wouldn't be here since he had to chauffeur Marilyn Monroe to the Arthur Godfrey Show. 19. Mary Jester has on a very becoming hat. She's a hat designer in New York. 20. I hear an airplane, I bet that's Edward Lakey landing at the Boonville Airport. He's a pilot for Piedmont Airline. 21. Mr. Martin, Did you hear about Betty Moxley scoring 50 points for the Hanes Hosiery Team? 22. This chic-looking young lady entering the door is none other than Jane Kane Webb, a dress designer at St. Louis. 23. Who's that guy with a mustache? Why, it's Joe Reece. He's a professor at N. C. State. 24. John Reece is going to sing a solo tonight. He sings tenor on the Fred Waring Show. 25. They tell me Ophelia Ring is an excellent dancer. She's the dancing instructor in Boonville. 26. Cit izens of Boonville, If you want to sue anyone, just see Billy Hayes Simpson. He has the honor of being Boonville's first and best lawyer. 27. Doesn't that gentleman have broad shoulders! Billy Smitherman is playing pro-football with the Washington Red Skins. 28. Peggy Snow, Manager of Spainhours, is still looking for her one and only. 29. I don't seem to recognize the lady with the poodle cut entering the building now. Oh, it's Grace Taylor, an owner and operator of Grace's Lunch Stand in Elkin 30. Since Dan Wilhelm is a movie director, he is looking for new talents while here in Boonville. So girls, start combing that hair. 31. Just look at that uniform. It's Grace Williams. She's an airline hostess for the American Airline. 32. Berlie, How's the pro-baseball with the Yankees? I heard that you are having a wonderful season. 33. Hello, Donna Kay. How do you like your job as a receptionist for a lawyer? 34. A real authority on jets is here. Benny Steelman, who is a jet mechanic in Arizona. 35. We just learned at the last moment that Shirley Wagoner and Shirley Moxley will be late. Shirley Wagoner is an x-ray technician in Maryland. Shirley Moxley is a secretary for the Jack Benny Show. 36. Since everyone is looking so young after 10 years, Allan Wagoner is putting us on his television program advertising Stay Young Cream . 37. I have just found out that Bobby Joe Moxley is the soloist on Allan's Television Show. 38. Here is Gerry Hayes who just came in after a P. T. A. meeting. She's teaching at Boonville, I learn.
