Volleyball team has great season Our volleyball girls worked hard ro improve rheir skills this year. In November they travel- ed ro Bloomington ro help wirh rhe Indiana Universiry-Purdue University Monon Spike gome. Then, in December, rhey went ro Purdue ro work rhe boll rota- tion for rhe NCAA Regional finals against UCLA and Western Michigan. The volleyball season began for rhe girls wirh rheir fifth annual volleyball camp, under rhe direc- tion of Doug West and Sharon Moore of Indiana University. The season ended wirh o remarkable record of 19 wins ond 6 losses for rhe varsiry ream and 11 wins and 3 tosses for rhe junior vorsiry. Season highlights included a win over 13rh ranked Marer Dei in rhe Invirartonal Tour- nament. Other memorable evenrs included winning two in- vitational tournaments, placing second in rhe Secrionol, ond plac- ing two girls on rhe Big Eight Con- ference ream. They were Delma Willerr and Berh Winserr. Darla Gerber was selected by her teammates as rhe most valuable player for rhe 1983 season, and Tammy Lohr rook rhot honor for rhe junior vorsiry. Swim testi dives right in A new sporr was added to DH5 athletics. When the remodel- ing and construction was com- pleted in the summer of 1983, DHS boosted o fine, new swimm- ing pool. Ms. Jenny Oberhausen wos hired to teach the P.E. swim dosses ond also to coach both the boys' ond the girls' swim teams. The girls competed in the foil, ond the boys in the winter. The girls compiled o respec- table record of 4-9, o good showing, considering it wos the first year. Several of the team members did very well in the Sectionals and also qualified for Consolation Finals. The boys hod o record of 1-9, but their enthusiasm did not wane, and they set many per- sonal bests. They also did very well in the Sectionals, and several qualified for the Consola- tion Finals and Finals. Freshman Alicia Pryor rakes a break between evenrs or a home swim meet. Junior Tim Dyrum concentrates on breoth control before taking a dive during o competition.
