Ms. Koporich was o cheerleader in college and she was instrumental in helping the BHS cheerleaders choreograph movements ond develop new ways to stimulate school spirit. Another stimulus to BHS spirit was the new mascot, Big B , whose bee costume was donated by the Youth Center Board. The mascot went to oil the home gomes ond traveled to Regionals. He began with some strong Senior leadership ond powerful support from rhe underclassmen; however, rhe season was plagued by injuries to rhe offen- sive ream, ond rhe overall record was on unsatisfying 4 wins ond 6 losses. The Boonville defense hod on outstanding season with Joe Smith leading his team in quarterback socks. Joe was named Defensive Lineman of rhe Year ond was also picked for rhe All-Area Team. The Defen- sive Dock of the Year Award was won by Orion Tirzer, who also tied rhe school record in in- rerceprions. The Pioneer Most Valuable Player, Tim Hosford, was picked co-caprain, earned Defensive Linebocker of rhe Year, mode Defensive 1000 Point Club, ond was chosen for rhe All-Conference Team. The season's strength in of- fense come from Senior lineman Brent Cummings, who wos chosen os a co-coproin. By runn- ing rhe boll over 5 yards per carry, Tim Hosford earned rhe Offensive Bock Award. Junior Greg Word, who coughr 16 for over 20 yards per catch, proved to be Most Valuable Receiver in Boonville s passing gome. Junior John Baker threw for almost 1,000 yards and kicked for 38 yards per punt. John also mode rhe All-Area and All-Conference Teams. Above right. Her Maid of Honor was Miss Pom Bruce who was escorted by Delbert Monroe. At the condusion of the ceremony, Queen Becky and her court rook their place on the platform decorated by the Art and Publicity Committee of Stu- dent Council. In November they travel- ed ro Bloomington ro help wirh rhe Indiana Universiry-Purdue University Monon Spike gome. Then, in December, rhey went ro Purdue ro work rhe boll rota- tion for rhe NCAA Regional finals against UCLA and Western Michigan. The volleyball season began for rhe girls wirh rheir fifth annual volleyball camp, under rhe direc- tion of Doug West and Sharon Moore of Indiana University. The season ended wirh o remarkable record of 19 wins ond 6 losses for rhe varsiry ream and 11 wins and 3 tosses for rhe junior vorsiry. Season highlights included a win over 13rh ranked Marer Dei in rhe Invirartonal Tour- nament. Other memorable evenrs included winning two in- vitational tournaments, placing second in rhe Secrionol, ond plac- ing two girls on rhe Big Eight Con- ference ream. They were Delma Willerr and Berh Winserr. Darla Gerber was selected by her teammates as rhe most valuable player for rhe 1983 season, and Tammy Lohr rook rhot honor for rhe junior vorsiry. When the remodel- ing and construction was com- pleted in the summer of 1983, DHS boosted o fine, new swimm- ing pool. Ms. Jenny Oberhausen wos hired to teach the P.E. swim dosses ond also to coach both the boys' ond the girls' swim teams. The girls competed in the foil, ond the boys in the winter. The girls compiled o respec- table record of 4-9, o good showing, considering it wos the first year. Several of the team members did very well in the Sectionals and also qualified for Consolation Finals. The boys hod o record of 1-9, but their enthusiasm did not wane, and they set many per- sonal bests. They also did very well in the Sectionals, and several qualified for the Consola- tion Finals and Finals. Freshman Alicia Pryor rakes a break between evenrs or a home swim meet. In the Regionals, they won 40-42 in overtime against North Posey, bur fell in the final gome with Bosse. Our overall record was 15-8. The Most Valuable Player Award for varsity went to Beth Winsert, and the reserve award went to Melinda Powers. Three sessions were held daily—morning, afrernoon, and nighr. The camp was con- ducted by Jeri Herron, director of ADC Clinics. The girls learned a number of modern jazz donee routines which they lorer per- formed or half-time of rhe home basketball gomes. Some of rhe donee routines were 1999 , 'Thriller', Fascination”, ond Lies, Lies, Lies' . The Senior routine was Freokazoid” ond was choreographed ond taught by rhe three Seniors: Coproin Kristi Nix, Monica Rozell, ond Donnie Moyo. The Varsity ream, under the new leadership of Head Coach Jerrill Vandevenrer, generated a lor of excitement and enthusiasm by tourney rime. Coach Vandevenrer rook a very young ream and molded them into a force to be reckon- ed with. With only one Senior starter and two Junior starters, the Pioneers swept through the Sectionals eliminating the favored Patriots and the Castle Knights. For the Vorsity ream the Leadership Award winner was Brian Titzer. Evan DeWirr won Most Rebounds and Best Free Throw Percentage. Best Field Goal Percentage went to Jeff Goedde while Jon Bruner won Most Assists. For reserves, David Morris won Best Field Goal Percentage and Most Rebounds. Alan Wirtz was the winner for Best Free Throw Percentage. The Most Assists Award went to Kyle Thompson. For the Frosh ream Jon Omer won Most Assists and Best Free Throw Percentage. In addi- tion, rhe students prepared a Christmas play which they presented for some area elementary schools. The new auditorium was a source of pride and enjoyment for rhe school and rhe communi- ty. Seniors in Seniors take honors On May 21, 1984, family and friends gathered ro see the Class of 1984 receive honors on Awards Nighr. Mr. Lorry Riggs, principal, opened the program with o welcoming speech and commended rhe Class on o job well done. Many academic awards were presented ro outstanding Seniors. One of the most prestigious of these is rhe Porrish Fuller Awards for Excellence in English. The two winners of this award were Rhonda Hen- drickson and Sue Ann Meyer. Outstanding athletes were also recognized. The Student Council Sportsmanship Awards were presented ro Darla Gerber and Brian Titzer. Also, the Kiwanis presented Tim Hosford their Most Valuable Football Player Award. The program was concluded with rhe traditional passing of rhe Student Council gavel.
