CU..-ass Hxsrogyg 1 The Freshman class of l956 enrolled with thirty-four students, The class was sponsored by Mr. Brooks and Miss Woody. Except for the trip to Yorvale Crag, the year passed uneventfully. During the sophomore year, the class went to Sulphur Springs. Mr. Deal was the class sponsor. The Junior year was a busy one for every member of the class. The juniors entertained the seniors at a banquet, and afterward a picture show. The school sponsored a popularity contest which was won by a junior, Aileen Johnson. Miss Hayes was our sponsor. Our senior year was destined to be the outstanding year of the class. The sponsor- ing of the year book was an outstanding accomplishment. Several members of the class helped the school to win the Journal-Sentinel Girls' basket-ball tournament. Bernard Nook was selected as our president. Mr. Walker was our sponsor. The class selected as mascot, Barbara Speas Coram. This class has won for Boonville High School several athletic records. Host of the members were from-the lower grades, however we found Paul Brown, Vaudy Hobson, James Stewart, Bruce Vestal, Arvil Caudle and Glenn Dezern waiting to welcome us. As the year passed we're sorry to say that Vaudy Hobson, Clark Jester, Violet Angell and Bruce Vestal fell by the way side. Evelyn spr inkle, Martha Cecil and Grady Fowler moved to ano- ther community. On May'2O, 1958 most of the eight grade girls went on a trip to Raleigh. Mrs. Reece was in charge and the trip was made in Mr. Frank Hobson's truck. During the month of April the boys went to Rockford on a fishing trip. Mr. Deal and.Hr. Walker were in charge. They hunted frogs and had a wiener roast. Part of the boys planned to go on a trip to the mountains the last part of July. The trip however was made in August. Mr. Walker was in charge. Wien the year was over all were advanced to the ninth grade, but Orrell Bohannon and Marvin Hicks. In the ninth grade Robert Burgess, Curtis Haynes, and Grey Brown joined our class. During the year Bill Amburn become a page at the North Carolina General Assembly. The teachers will have to learn to kick if Marvin Hicks ever gets out of the eight grade. Wonder if Bill Dobbins will ever get in a hurry? Why does Bobbie Hobson like to see snow? Who knows why Carolyn Fletcher sits by the south window in study hall? Complaints have been made about Lucille Wagoner dropping her mirror. We often wonder what Axie Shore will do next year without her sister? Will some one help Cecil Snow with her studying? Will Callie Jane Caudle always be working math? They were victorious in every tournament they entered which included: the Flat Rock Tourney, the Four County Tourney, the Yadkin County Championship and as a grand climax to a most outstanding season they were crowned champions of the Journal-Sentinal, North-West N. C. Tournament. It was truly a fitting finish for a most remarkable group of young girls. In all they won thirty-one games, lost three and tied one. Coached by Professor Albert Martin, the team led by Amburn, Doub, and Woodruff as forwards, and J. Norman, Coram, V. Norman and Coe as guards displayed the style of play that is witnessed only in champions The above mentioned players were ably assisted by Mosteller, Shore, Dobbins, Pardue and Fletcher. Boonville's girls, a group much smaller than the average team, made up for this literal shortness by their speed, cleverness and deception. It was in this latter phase of play that their performance dis- played a poise and finesse seldom seen in the play of girls. It was this, together with their systametic co-ordination that led to their highly successful season. S U M H A R Y .. BHS 45 Dobson BHS S. V f. 5121 LJ 'L .khgfuj ': Resume of Season Getting off to a slow start at the beginning of the basket-ball season due to the fact that there was a scarcity of experienced players the Boonville boys hit their stride before mid-season, and from then on gave a good account of themselves in keeping with the basket-ball tradition of the school. The team was composed mostly of boys who had never gone out for basket-ball before the beginning of the present season, and luckily this was a group of willing workers. Only three players had ever played any varisty basket-ball. These boys were Mock, Stinson, and Woodruff. with these boys supplying the nucleus, Coach Deal built a team that was good enough to win 22 out of 51 games against the best competition in the Northwest. Mock led the individual scoring parade with 465 points, while Stinson trailed him closest with 204. By his sterling performance through-out all the season, and especially in the greatest of all tournaments, the Journal and Sentinel, Mock won a place on the A11-tournament team. Other boys going a long way toward making this a successful basket-ball season were: Curtis Hobson, Fred Coram, Robert Burgess, Billy Brendle, Loyd Burgess, Harold Stinson, James Stewart, and Gilbert Pardue.
