J CLASS HISTORY April, 1953 Dear Children, ARTHUR ANNA GILBERT BACKER It was only yesterday that I dressed you 1 and made all of the elegant preparations for HD0-itn uGi1' your first school day. Such brave children. 'Always there with an NB1ond, bashful, The big building, the imposing class rooms, and to think it was a sudden transition from answerw behavinvw our being together all day to a formal situ- ation where you were gone. Remember, there I was no kindergarten and you people started in l the first grade. Now let's see. Who were l s 2? your friends? Art Anna, Marvel Warren, Phyllisi Persons, Butch Henry, Lloyd Miller, Barbara Hines, Tom DeTraglia, the twins, Francis and Franklin Sattler, Norman Fuller, Eddie-Larriveyy Mickey Golden, John Presta, and Buzz Reed. As l I remember, you all did very well. I've for- l gotten who the teacher was, but in the second grade, it was Miss Hill. And, gee, you must y have been wonderful children for you were all promoted to the third grade. How nice you all A looked in buttons and bows. You picked up some new friends, Helenjane Holmes, and Evelyn Yauger Your teacher, Miss Vernon CMrs, Newell Wagonerl, do you think she'd recognize you now? I suppose Miss Iseneker would rather not be reminded that she taught you children plus some new ROSE BICKFORD BRUCE BROOKS playmates, Helen Eck, Ann Walton, Tom Kotary, HQ Q, H Ugpucen and Alice Walker. Speaking of Miss Iseneker , 1O'ie reminds me that next year, Mrs B. Davis began uN0Ht, Sweet. likes NTHII, dark and teaching in Boonville and you children were N her first class. More friends were acquired, WPeten 20Od'h99Pted Gilbert Backer, Duane Heiler, and Alice Rice. ,AGIIIIL 'inf COE llvh-alt!! You were sad, but time, hard work, and play healed your sorrow. Besides, going into the seventh grade, you were grown-up. You discarded the buttons and bows and you were interested in parties, boys and girls, passing classes, and, child- ren, your first experience with.men teachers. Remember Mr. Hughes and Mr. Bailey? You children, oops, young ladies and gentlemen, I mean, received some new friends in Bernie Penczek, Wynola Yager, Ruth Tuttle, Ruth Tuffey,Bruce Brooks, and Rosie Bickford. If I'm not mistaken, it was in that year Mr. Barraco became your advisor. The first sign of your high school years to come certainly showed up in eighth grade what with class parties, officers, and even a newspaper of your own. Remember the nCrusadern, with Helenjane the editor and Tom Kotary writing up all the fresh corn. Your class meetings, what a time you all had. Now you knew you were approaching high school days for you became ugrayn worrying over regents. Well, you thought you were something. Now you were Freshmen. You had your first public dance, The Fresh Frolic. What excitement and what a wonderful dance it was. But then that year was no different from the past except that for the first time since the sixth grade you were all together as one class again. No different in that all you have undertaken has been successful. I have never seen such excitement, such planning as went on in your Sophomore year. The Albany Trip, the Sophomore Hop, and Club lO. Remember how you lost Buzz Reed? Mr. Barraco found him between the capitol and the Memoria Q l ' ai. Who can tell, you may see their names in the Utica sports page any day now. It seems that all I can recall is the very successful social calandar in your Junior year, beginning with the momentous event of deciding on the class rings. Your individual personalities certainly were reflected by the variety of choices. Remember the dance that year? Halloween ghosts, goblins, and Mike's spider that looked like a from Mars. Oh, murder, suspense, thrills, all portrayed by Phyllis as the maid to Evelyn, the rich old aunt, and all the suspects, Lloyd, John, Marvel, Helen Eck, and Eddie, Your Junior year was topped off with such a wonderful dance, the Junior Prom, You all looked very grown up in your gowns and dress suits. if ALICE RICE HSmileyn 'Let a smlle be your umbrellan 14 WQQQQQEW. s iaaaatsaref anis laaa+aaaaaaa saaaf FRANCIS SATTLER HJaken 'Keep it livelyn Y,- S- ua:- CLASS HISTORY fcon'tD The dance was climaxed by the Grand March, led by the king and queen, who were chosen by school-wide popular vote. Ahem, you can be proud Duane and Alice were chosen as king and queen, crowned by the president, Evelyn. And so children, this will be the last time I shall call you children for you have reached your first big milestone of life. You made it. You became Seniors and as the Seniors of the school you adjusted yourselves to a homeroom in the balcony. But it wasn't long and you had a homeroom on the ground floor. Your first thoughts turned to magazine sales. You did very well. Mike sold over 3100 worth of sub- scriptions himself. Keeping in line with events of the year, your first dance was called the Construction Hop with danger signs, wierd barracades, footprints on the wall, and good music. Your Senior year started its social whirl with success. Your theatrical talents were again tapped. This time for the annual Senior Play, nBrother Goosen. Yes, that was the name of the play. nButchH was brother goose. Marvel and Phyllis, who wanted him met the biggest obstacle in Betty, the halfback. Supporting them were haughty Helenjane, brother Lloyd, sister Emily, the southern belle, Rosie, the mad truck driver, Franklin, the unkempt maid, Joyce, and, yes, remember Evelyn of the WDarktown Folliesu? It was all fun, even getting up at 6:30 A. M. to have rehersals. Do you think Mr. Barraco will ever get over seeing Betty bounce down the steps at her house? It seemed as though you went from one important phase to another. Next came the graduation announcements. As usual, there was much discussion, but finally all agreed that ALICE WALKER HAI-ll ANN WALTON NAnnien nNo remedy for love nMake haste Slowlyn but to love moren 3 . . r FRANKLIN SATTLER HFrankn 'Rolling stones gather no mossn RUTH TUFFEY nBootsH 'All for fun and fun for alln MARVEL WARREN nMarvu WA good example is the best sermonu my as Q-vu-uf' Hi' NORBERT SURBERG nL1ttle Hanan nAll things are bear- able, even schooln RUTH TUTTLE ll rlxu t ll WLife is never dulln 1. wigeiflsx is .aff- fgggggi ,brews 'F' WYNOLA YAGER HSisterH 'Better small and shine than large and cast a shadown EVELYN YAUGER A . So you ordered a beautiful announcement along with your choice of calling cards. Graduation appeared to be around the corner, especially when the caps and gowns were ordered and the sample arrived. What excitement and anxiety was aroused in seeing one of your own classmates in a cap and gown. No sooner had you finished with this than orders for diplomas were taken. It seemed as though the end was near, but many things were still to be accomplished. The Kortenaerian suddenly sprang to life. Meetings, meetings, and more meetings. The staff was always on the go. The chief, Joan, certainly deserves a lot of credit. But then, each member of the class has, at different times, given his or her best for the success of the class functions. Let me stop here a minute. I'll have to prepare you for the final days of your high school career. There, now that's all done. You're going on your trip. I know you'll have a good time. You people have a knack for enjoying yourselves. Your finals are just around the corner. I'll worry as you wilL for certification, and passing means more now than it ever did be- fore. I can see you marching up to the stage Sunday night of Bac- calaurate. You are so attentive and serious as you listen to the ser- mon. All day Monday you will rehearee, and Monday night you will grad- uate. I can hear the strains of HPomp and Circumstancen as I see you being led to the stage. How beautiful it is just to think my child is graduating. You all look so happy and sad. I guess 1t's that feeling of success, of parting friendq and speeches. You're leaving as citi- zens of tomorrow. But there is still the Senior Ball, gay decorations, HChiefn 'Great modesty often hides great meritn sweet music, gowns and flowers. It's your final triumph of high school. You'll now be looked upon as alumni of Boonville Central School. The banquet will be in your honor. I can't help but wonder what the future holds in store for the Class of '53. But come what may, success and happiness to you all. Your loving Parent we up-,5 1- imc E fl? J ki ' I . L 'Q F-,.
