For many of us who are seniors, the two most important years of our lives, so far, are 1968, the year we were born and 1986, our high school graduation. With this in mind we would like to compare some of the events of these two years. Going back to '68, we discov ered two prominate figures were as sassinated. Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, manned space flight Apollo 8 orbited the moon for the first time, and the Vietnam Conflict” continued to rage in Southeast Asia. Mexico hosted the '68 Olympics ironically this year Mexico City was devastated by the worst earthquake recorded in modern history, reaching 7.8 on the Richter Scale. Thousands were reported missing or killed The first Super Bowl was staged in Miami's Orange Bowl between the Greenbay Packers (33) ar Oakland Raiders (14). Th troit Tigers were baseball Champions when they Louis Cardinals 4 games Fall the Cardinals battled the sas City Royals in what was desig nated the 1-70 Series. The Cardinals were humiliated in the seventh and decisive game of the series 11-0 L I Early October saw the annual Spirit Week . This week included days set aside for: Hawaiian Day. Class Color Day, '60’s Military Day, Dress Gp T Shirt Day and Red and Black Day. A good percent age of the Students participated however the seniors managed to edge out the rest of the student body. Other events included dances such as the SRA Toga Dance, the revival of the Bon Fire and the National Honor Society Annual Carna tion Sale. (Continued on page 6) (Tjip) Matt Benefede, Eric Ringlieb (Above (Right.) Ste The late sixties saw the introduction of Ford's hottest selling model in years, the Mustang . .. Volkswagen’s popularity continued and are still Seen today. Today's favorites include Vettes”, Jaguars and Porsches. Kids of the sixties would most likely be found listening to such music as: Mrs. Robinson” (Simon and Garfunkel) and Hey Jude” (The Beatles). Today Bruce Springsteen is the favorite and became even more popular after he returned home to NJ for his series of sold-out Meadowland Concerts. The hungry and the poor were not forgotten, many concerts were performed for their benefit. Thanks to Bob Geldorf of the “Boom Town Rats the “Live Aid for Ethiopia and the Farm Aid Concert for the American Farmers helped raise money for these events of global concern. Continued on Page 12 A. SALVADqr A.STOCKrdN r TKTOVIC Smoking has always been a controversial issue on high school campus’. In 1970, Boonton first designated the covered walk as a smoking area for all student smokers. Since more knowledge of cigarette related cancer incidents and proclaimations by the Surgeon General, Boonton Educators have taken a bold step to eliminate student smoking. The students felt that this new rule was unfair so petitions were circulated but the issue died due to a lack of support. In 1968, Boonton had its last underclass homecoming queen, Kathleen Hopkins, then a freshman. Last fall homecoming ceremonies were blessed with her presence, the 1984 Queen Leanne Nicholson and Boon ton’s first homecoming queen On nolee Allieri crowned in 1961. With two students involved in the National and State Student Council Associations, the SRA was always aware of the new ideas that were being discussed around the state and country. The SRA officers represented Boonton High at leadership training conferences, National, State and Regional meetings. NASC Region II representative Robert Keane hosted a meeting with students from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and Washington, D.C. in the first week of April. State Student Council President David Doty brought an end to his year as president at the 60th Annual State Convention at Trenton State College in January. SRA President Tina Morasco and Vice-President George Minitaglio were very instrumential in the addition of two machines in the high school that were appreciated by the students; (mixed reactions by the faculty) those being the Coke machine in the SRA office and (Continued on Page 77) New Items Cause Controversy . . . 7 6 (Left) Thirsty Sandi Miglin purchases soft drink from new vending machine (Above) Mr. Walter Angilly, Advisor the juke box in the cafeteria. Another addition was brought about by the effort of Carrie Dixon, Jennifer Renza and Jill Manson was the digital sign machine in the showcase overlooking the cafeteria. Many announcements can now be made through-out the day to the students and staff alike. Last fall, in addition to the annual spirit week, homecoming and tail gate picnic, the SRA officers brought back an old tradition, the bonfire. Over 300 students and adults attended the bonfire pep rally- The success of any organization is dependent upon the ability to work together. The 1985-86 SRA officers believe that the year's activities, programs and new additions and the spirit and repoire of this year’s student council have helped to make the year a successful one. 77 Band Retains Chapter V Title Under new director Mr. Jim Christman, the band has come farther than ever expected. Capturing the chapter championship for the fourth consecutive year. After a successful week at band camp in late August they came back to give their first public performance in the Boonton Labor Day Parade where they received second place for best band front. Under the field direction of third year drum major Tina Morasco the band competed in six competitions throughout the year. Out of these shows they took two first place trophy's, one second place and one third. They later won the Chapter Championships and continued competing all the way to the Atlantic Coast Championships where they placed eighth overall out of twenty-five bands. Tina Morasco also received a trophy for third place best overall drum major. This year's field repetoire included Believe in Yourself from the Wiz; All Might Long”; Serenade to a Picket Fence : the drum solo; and “Rainbow Connection : from the Muppet Movie. Without the help of instructors Mike Cappola (assistant drill design and percussion), Ray Troxell (music and drill design), Ken Weiss (percussion) and Cynthia McConnell and Claire Mahoney (band front instructors) the season would not have been as successful as it was. The student leaders included: Patti Corcoran: President, Julie Huebsch: Vice-President. Dana Rocco: Treasurer, Jennifer Boynton and Allison Godfrey: Secretaries. The choir also gave many outside performances during the holidays which included a concert at Neil’s New Yorker for the Boonton Rotary Club. After much hard work and many fund raisers, both the band and choir took a trip to Canada which proved to be a success. In turn the students from Canada spent four days in Boonton each with different families. CHOIR dkiva 1H3DWOD Green Emerges Champs In Sixth Year 100 The Indoor Soccer Club entered its sixth season under the leadership of senior president Mark Lawrence. Five teams representing the various student classes competed in a season beginning in early December and ran through February. The season was marred by early rule infractions but finished enthusiastically and competitively in the final match in which the Green Team barely defeated the strong senior Tall Boy squad. The surprise team was the sophomore Yellow Team, led by Bart Zisa, the leagues leading scorer. The Orange Team, captained by Bill Reifers, had an outstanding season but lost to the Black in the semi-finals. The most improved team was the Black Tall Boys. After a shakey start, they solidified their defense and utilized their strong offense to earn them a spot in the finals. Bill Paterson was the most highly respected goalie in the league. In the finals, both Black and Green teams demonstrated early game jitters, but it was the Green, directed by Ian Lewin, who defeated the Black, 3 to 1. NHS National Honor Society The members of the National Honor Society possess the qualities of leadership, scholarship, service and character. Through candy sales and donations from alumni the N.H.S. is able to sponsor scholarships for the graduating seniors. The members pride themselves in helping the community and the less fortunate. One example was a fund raiser for the mentally disabled children. The 1985-1986 officers were David Doty: President; Carrie Dixon: Vice-President; Buddy Farrell-Secretary; and Bob Keane-Trea-surer. Advisors were Mrs. Lois Branch and Ms. Susan Krouse. Computer Club: Paul Tupaczewski, Mrs. Helfrick, Craig Intelisano, Chadd Sepersaude, Samita Thapar, Todd Turner, Virginia Stevens, Kofi Donnelly, Sean Gough. Anita Thapar and Mr. Donnelly. Language Clubs This year the Spanish club has forty enthusastic members. The club president Pam Herzo had many new ideas for the club. These actives included a bake sale and such cultural events as dining at the Las Tapas Restaurant in Den-ville and the Chessman Bistro in Parsippany. The annual visit to a near-by nursing home during the Christmas holiday season was also part of the activities. The second swim picnic outing was held over the summer vacation. The French Club was one of the largest club organizations with fifty members. The club participated in many activities. This year they had a Halloween and Christmas Party at Poor Henry's in Montville. In the spring the club journeyed to New York’s Museum of Modern Art to view the works of French artist Toulouse Latrec, a graphic artist of the early 20th century. They also enjoyed lunch at the Gingerbread Man, a French Restauratn. The club had one major fund raiser, and many other cultural activities. The advisor of this year's club was Mr. Palumbo. Club officers for the year were: Atienne Benetiz (President) Lisa DeGraw (Vice-President), Samita Thapar (Secretary), Corde Bednar (SRA Representative) and Matt Turner (Treasurer). LANGUAGE Double Trouble To Produce 1986 Echoes Wampus . . . BHS Newspaper in 1985 the Wampus Staff grew with many freshmen as new members. Anthony De Felippis became the editor. Expressions SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS The 1985-86 school year has brought many changes to the high school ski club. As always Mr. Ted Seugling was the club advisor for this activity with help from Mr. Dewar, Mr. Petrein, Mr. Lefke, Mr. Prehodka, and Mrs. Pisano. The officers for the 85-86 ski season were C. Dixon, C. Mitchko, G. White, A. Hurford, and N. Mann. To mark the first season, the club was divided into two groups. Freshman and Sophomore's went one week and the Seniors and Juniors went the following week. Only one chartered bus was used each time, therefore, reducing the clubs size and cost to individual members. There were two trips to Vernon Valley for each group. Extra day and night trips were available for members of the club. (Top) Club Officers (left to right) C. Mitchko, C. Dixon, N. Mann, A. Hurford, G. Shite, T. Seughling, (Centered Right) D. A Night In The Ukraine This production, actually two separate musicals in two acts, combines the serious renditions of songs of by gone days against the witty antics of the Marx Brothers. The first act entertained the older generation of the Boonton Community in that the student cast gave their all to the music of the past. In act two the action comes alive as Groucho: Tim Gerds, Harpo: Ker-rie Nicholson and Carlo: (Greg Renza) sought the favors of Mrs. Pavlenko: (Allison Godfrey) in a hilarious love triangle. The high jinx of the trio kept the audiences in stitches. The dance routines ran the gamit of tap to tango. This was the last in a series of musicals directed by Mr. Joseph Szabo. 109 CARE BEARS GIVE RED 3 IN A ROW For the third consecutive year, the Red Team has achieved another thrilling victory. Overall captains Lee Anne Nicholson and Jill Grenevich led the Red Team with co-captain Tina Mor-ascso in their journey through mysterious places and whimsical lands in the story of the Care Bears. We first find the Care Bears tumbling in Care-A-Lot with captains Elisa Be-vacqua and Theresa Giblock. They are faced with the decision of whether or not to help Laura: Vivian Boswell, find Karen: Tina Morasco who had run away. Tap led by captains Dana Rocco and Amy Aquaro showed the vote. Karen got lost in an abandoned, disgusting park. She saw rats which brought in flashlights, captains Rachel Darrow, and Kerrie Nicholson. This event won best overall for the Red Team. Townspeople helped the Care Bears clean up the park in Modern with captains Chris Mitchko, and Carol Tasso. Professor Coldheart's slaves capture Karen which brings in ca-lasthenics, captains Tina Morasco and Vivian Boswell. All of the Care Bears free the slaves of being zombies, by doing the Care Bear stare on Professor Coldheart. The story ends with a celebration for finding Karen and the entire team joins in the finale. (Left) Megan Thomas, Toni Dorino and Elina Sorochynskyj Black The Black Team took a trip to Fantasy Island in last years presentation. Overall captains for the Black Team were Lisa Yoder and Marissa Diello, with co-captain Kathy Ramiza. As monkeys, tumbling and apparatus, led by Kathy Ramiza and Carrie Spender danced in excitement awaiting the arrival of the plane. Flags with captains Kristen rigg and Denise Rockis, landed the guests Maria (Lisa Yoder), and Roland Banks. They were greeted by Mr. Roher (Allison Allieri), Tatoo (Claudia Berrio), and the monkey (Carrie Spender) as his sidekick. Pompons as hula dancers, led by Angela As-pras, and Allison Webber, said “HELLO and welcomed the guests to the island. Tap captains Michelle Vanderhoff, Christine Murray and Angela Laslandra were vacationers. Modern, voted best overall, was the fulfillment of Maria’s fantasy, led by captains Noelle Mann, Jill Man-son, and Annika Bjornson. Maria's fantasy was to reunite the Jets and Sharks as friends. The time came for Roland’s fantasy of being Stevie Wonder as he sang I just called to say I love you.” Last year's show was dedicated in memorial of Stacy Stamiatides, who was one of 1984’s Black Teams overall captains. Coach Jack Francis led a strong squad of seniors to a successful 7-2 season. The experience and enthusiasm of the players was a large factor in the winning season. Senior quarterback Joe Giardina completed 74 passes (1150 yards) to an experienced group of receivers including Howie Hubler, Mike Walsh, David Kostka and Tony Fre-derico. Tony led all receivers with 26 catches. Another strong part of Boonton’s offense was the punch provided by senior running backs Rod Roller and Norman Russo. Not only did this year's team had a winning record of 11-5-1 but the team also qualified for the Morris County Field Hockey tournament and the New Jersey State tournament. Led by the co-captains Carrie Dixon, Becky Smith, Atienne Benitez and Linda Fengya the field hockey teams hard work and determination paid off. This determination, not only showed in the team statistics but also in school records, many of which were broken. As a team, more games were won in the 1985 season than in all previous seasons combined. Also more goals were scored this season. A team which qualified for both the county and state tournaments. The inexperienced Bombers learned many new techniques on both offense and defense and practiced fundamentals. Hard work and enthusiasm continued to be the heart and soul of the team, however lack of experience proved to be the toughest. All in all, the 1985 season was productive for many players. Ed Duderich hit 400 and led the team in runs batted in. Greg Huebschner was second in hitting, and led the team in runs scored. Pete Scheer and Ken Stevens tied for the lead in fielding percentage. With ten returning veterans in 1986, the Bombers look to return to tournament form. Mike Kerr and Rich Rivera will be returning workhorses on the mound. Sophomores Greg Heubscher and Pat Ferraro will be returning at the center field and short stop positions respectively. The catching chores will be divided among David Doty, Brian Pisarcik and Bob Venturini. The team has a solid nucleus. Knowing they had only two years left at BHS they united to make their junior year a memorable one. They kicked off the year with a successful magazine sale and raised money to be used for various activities. One of the more original ideas the junior class had was the MORP dance. The MORP (Prom backwards) was an “unusual affair which included an ice cream eating contest (no spoons) and for added effect, a clothesline with old clothes was used as decoration. Once again, many groups participated in the Annual Tail Gate Picnic, but the junior's showed their unique style by using a red Corvette to enrich their classes display of food. Their Winter Holiday fun included a Junior Senior Dinner Dance with the theme An Animated Holiday”. The decorations consisted of large cartoon characters drawn and painted by junior and senior students. A good time was had by all.
