The time has come. Some have looked forward to it. some have dreaded it, but in either case, graduation is upon us. The Class of 1985 will be remembered for their aliveness: an ever present feeling of living out each moment of joy and sorrow to its fullest. Throughout these four years, the class of '85 has grown stronger and now is alive as ever. We have survived thus far, and will continue to live out the future. Our class has been a reflection of the entire country. A growing patriotic feeling has developed in the country, and has been carried down in the schools. Nationally, we have banned together and lived through the hostage crisis in Iran, the Korean Airline Disaster, the invasion of Grenada and the death of our boys in Lebanon. On the lighter side, we have witnessed the space shuttles' num-berous flights and the beginning of the renovation of the Statue of Liberty in preparation for her 100th birthday. This year we had a presidentat election with democrat Fritz Mondale running opposing then incumbent Ronald Reagan. The Campaign all around had been an alive one with new ground being broken. The campaigns of Reverend Jes- se Jackson, the first Black candidate, and Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman vice-presidental candidate, confirmed racial and sex discrimination as not being factors in the election. At press time the president led opinion polls to be re-elected. On the sports scene, the United States was proud to host the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Los Angeles became the site for the second time, the first being in 1932. Despite the boycott by the USSR and a number of Communistic countries, the games attracted the largest number of participating nations. Many of us at home felt a closeness by witnessing the journey of the Olympic torch as it passed thru both Boonton and Lincoln Park on its 9,000 mile trip to Los Angeles. The largest television audience saw our team win a record 88 gold medals. Their performances stirred emotions that even non-sport fans felt. Gold Medalist Carl Lewis State Sectional Champions: Coach Bongo, Noreen Cassidy, Noreen Walsh, Thea Giardina, Vicki Scozzafava, Samantha Liberatore, Andrea Forte, Coach Horton and Karen Weltner In baseball, the 1984 World Series saw a new combination take part in the post season classic. For San Diego, the first time in their short 15 year history. For Detroit it was 14 years since their last pennant and 39 years since their last World Series victory. Sports in BHS have been just as prosperous as National Events. Our field hockey team continued to improve along with our lacrosse, tennis and soc- cer teams. The cross country teams have shown definite progress. This past season the girls' team was ranked third in the county. They went on to win the North II Group II Sectional title. No one can forget the infamous newspaper game the girls' basketball team staged against Morris Catholic. In our junior year, the football team, having one of their best seasons ever, demonstrated a renewed enthusiasm for victory. 7 In school, our spirit has kept alive too. broadened its club offerings to all stu-Our pep-rallies and spirit weeks were as dents. Leading off the musical year was Michael Jackson's Victory tour to his record breaking Thriller album. Born in The USA , Bruce Springsteen's 1984 tour played to SRO crowds across the country. Ten so d-out performances were given in his home state-New Jersey. The 1984 Miss America Pagenant scandal involving Venessa Williams. America's first black title holder, resulted in the first dethroning of the crown. New Jersey's runner-up, Suzzete Charles, completed the reign. The crown was then given to the 1985 Miss America, Sharlene Wells — Miss Utah. The nation was hit with a craze of Cabbage Patch dolls and the board game Trivial Pursuit. Also causing a stir was the return of Gumby and the comic strip Doonsbury. Hollywood produced such money making films as Ghostbusters and Terms of Endearment. BAND BBC HOMECOMING CHEERLEADERS INDOOR SOCCER Vo-Tech JAZZ CHOIR CLUBS PLAY GSA 1984-85 STUDENT COUNCIL The SRA officers for 1984-85 were President Greg Renza, Vice President David Doty, Treasurer Dan Worts, Corresponding Secretary Tina Morasco and Recording Secretary George Min-utaglio. The officers and Members of the Student Council (Homeroom reps and Class Presidents) were involved in the operating of the entire activities program. Many new clubs began; the Computer Club, the Business Club, and the Film Club. Freshman Orientation, the Blood Drive, the Day Care Center Christmas Drive, the Concert T-Shirt sale and the Computer Match were also tra- ditional and enjoyable activities. Highlights of the year have to be recognition that came to two Boonton High School Juniors. David Doty was elected President of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils at the January Convention. While David is the fourth Boonton student to hold office in the sixty years of the NJASC existence, he was the first President Boon-ton has had. Bob Keane, Junior homeroom rep was elected to the National Association of Stu- dent Councils Executive Board. Bob's job in the two year term is to represent all high school students in NJ, NY, PA, MD, DE, and Washington D.C. Mr. Angilly, SRA advisor and Executive Director of NJASC was elected President of the USA Executive Directors Association at a meeting in San Francisco. An active student council has well trained leaders and BHS was awarded by NJASC for the 19th consecutive year. Sec. Tina Morosco MARCHING BAND TAKES COAST! After months of practice, hard work, and dedication, the time the band put in seemed trifling. Under the direction of Mr. Joe Szabo. the band retained their Chapter V title and then some. This year's group won the Atlantic Coast Championship when defeating 24 of the best bands on the East Coast. The band scored an all time high score of 85.25 to capture the title and bring home the coveted banner. To commemorate this event, the club played top hits from each of the previous ten years. The BBC continued its traditions with such activities as the Top 25 Poll but added new events such as the Homecoming Dance. The dance was very successful with decorations, refreshments and music all supplied by the BBC. The club works off a routine of half-hour shows each morning. The designated DJ and his engineer supply music and school news from 7:25 to 7:55 each morning. This year's club activities also included a field trip to Morristown's WMTR and Montclair State College. These trips give club members impressions of the workings of professional and college radio stations. Club officers were: President-Ed Baldwin and Vice President in Charge of Programming was Willy Leeds. The addition of many new underclassmen helped to ensure the continuation of the dub into its second decade. The 1983 reign ended as Maureen Reynolds transferred the crown to the tearful new winner. Lee Anne's escort was Robert Cabana. This year's freshman nominees (pictured on the next page) included: Debbie Baldini with John Miele, Jennifer Renza with Eric Geissler and Debbie O'Conner with David Doty. The teams were broken up into two conferences-the Angus Division (red, gold, maroon) and the Meryweather Conference (white, black, green). As the season progressed, it was clear who the powerful teams were. The Meryweather Conference was dominated by the White team consisting of varsity soccer players such as: Ricky Pyontek, Mark Tewilliger, and Ian Lewin. The White team had a regular season record of 6-1, their only loss with a fall to the Red team 4-1. The Angus Division was easily controlled by the Red team whose aggressive play and pregame antics literally shunned opposing players to pack it in early . The Red team had the two highest scoring leaders in the league in Mike Casey and Dan Worts. Other members of the Red team were Mike Krok, Pete Scheer, Scott VanDuyne, Kevin Freehill, and Tom DuBarry. 90 The Red team ended the regular season with a 7-1 record, losing only a 2-1 decision to the White team. The championship game was the most exciting in indoor soccer history. It was the Red team facing the White and both teams battled right to the end. At the end of the first half, the score was tied at one goal apiece. Again the score tied up at the end of the second half at 2-2. The Morris County Vocational School District provides vocational education programs that will provide the necessary background to prepare the student to be successful and productive in their particular area of expertise. The goal of the staff is to prepare the student for successful employment in the job related to the training he or she received at Vo-Tech. Vo- Tech offers twenty career programs to interested high school students in the Morris County area. The program is designed whereby the student spends a half day at Vo-Tech and the other half fulfilling academic requirements at school. 95 Above: Tim Kondroski and Eric Rohrer MUSIC EVERYWHERE The 1984-85 Concert Choir has once again brought out the vocal talents of students at Boon ton High School The Choir, directed by Mrs. Cynthia Verost, performed at Neil's New Yorker for the Rotary Christmas Party and in a com- 9 bined Christmas and Spring Concerts with the band. In addition, the concert choir gave a joint performance with the Mountain Lakes High School Choir for the Morris County Boards Dinner, in early November. The members brought cheer to the men's holiday. The dub also planned a trip to the Aspen Restaurant for a Spanish dinner. Spring events include a trip to Great Adventure along with a lot of fun! The club officers are President Chris Heim-ness. Vice President Laura Herzo. Miss Epstein is the club's advisor. SPANISH CLUB EXPRESSIONS In September. Expressions entered its fourth year and provided the school with artwork and literature in its three issues. Two third of this year's staff were first year club members. Their participation created the largest staff in the club's history. Also of great assistance were the seven returning members from the 83-84 staff. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Those students who are members of the National Honor Society have been chosen for their outstanding qualities of scholarship, character, service and leadership. Throughout the year, the group has had several fundraising projects to further their club sponsored scholarships. The projects included: a carnation sale, a candy sale, a cabbage-patch doll raffle, a writing contest in the elementary levels where saving bonds were awarded to the winners: plus donations from alumni. FRENCH CLUB 99 MATH TEAM COMPUTER CLUB WAMPUS Wampus membership grew this year to fifteen, the highest in over five years. A new format and articles ranging from philosophy to sports increased the student body interest. Controversial advice, news, puzzles and a humorous teacher caricature done by Louis Fitzig kept issues lively. Mrs. Michele Zanella is the newspaper advisor. 100 BOOK CLUB MEMBERS MEDIA Student Media Members volunteer their free periods to help with the many functions of the library and media center. Their duties include: the shelving of books and magazines, circulation procedures and displays. They assist teachers and students at the copy and the ditto machine, or help in the library office with the processing of new materials. The more equipment oriented media members deliver and pick-up AV equipment, and help teachers and substitutes operate the hardware and do minor repair and maintenance. Jointly with the Video Club, media members videotape school and sports events and become proficient in video production techniques. Another interesting aspect of library service is the computer work, like entering overdues and help with other automation procedures. In return media members receive various privileges and go on interesting trips. The advisors are Mrs. Kanischak and Mrs. Schindler. VIDEO CLUB The Video Club is a newly formed dub at Boonton High School. It meets on a weekly basis and gives members a chance to learn skills as camera operators, video switchers and sound manipulators. Most of the members are busy after school video-taping sports events, at home or at other schools. One major video project was videotaping an interview betweeen Mr. Kane, Mrs. Schindler and Mrs. Kanischak, which was later aired over Sammons Cable. Miss Allen was also taped by members in her science class for later broadcast. Projects for the rest of the school year include videotaping teaching techniques in metal shop and making music video for the Teen Arts Festival at the County College of Morris. Mrs. Schindler is the advisor for the club. 101 NEW CLUB BEGINS OLD ONE FLOURISHES The officers for the Business Society are as follows: Anand Khubani. Chairman of the board, who supervises officers in the club and arranges guest speakers and field trips. Louis Fitzig, President, he runs the club meetings and supervises members of the Society. Mike Ocohupinti, Vice President, he assists the president in completing weekly tasks. James Burghoffer, Treasurer, takes care of securities of the club. Wendy Capozzi, Recording Secretary, does all typing for the club such as letters that have been written to corporations, government agencies and financial institutions. BUSINESS CLUB w WAR GAMES 102 The War Games Club is composed of students interested in playing a variety of challenging simulation games. These games involve much of the members time. The members must learn complicated rules and utilize their concentration and clear thinking. This year, in an attempt to expand its membership, the club has played the popular game of Trivial Pursuit . While this game is not an example of a simulation game, it is popular with many people. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION: BOOKS AND ON THE JOB TRAINING DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Distributive Education is a program which allows students to leave school early each day to go to work. The program is in its 16th successful year due to the imvolvement of D-E teacher Mr. Prentice. The program prepares the students for employment in the areas of retailing, wholesaling, advertising, insurance, management, real estate, and investments. Participants benefit from this by being able to enter the business world with on-the-job training before high school graduation. Many students are immediately employed by the co-operating businesses, while others opt to attend college and further their career background. j WAb THE WORD! The 1984 production of Grease was a tremendous success, thanks to the talented director Joseph Szabo, his assistants and a creative cast. Special thanks are due to Paul Cieary for the set construction, Gene Horton for the set paintings. and Mike Writenour for the lighting and Stage Crew, who all did a wonderful job to make the production such a big hit. Also, Cynthia Verost the choral director and Maryann Dailey the choreographer deserve a great deal of credit for devoting most of their time and talent to Grease. The production of Grease was the suprise hit of the year. The scheduled two performances were sold out and a third encore performance was added to the delight of all. The Red team, led by captains Stephanie Tamburri and Sandy Giordano, co-captain Lenore Koval, visited a tropical island, through a story told to Lindsay (Janet Bolcar) and Derek (Lisa Bellini) by their grandfather (Patrice Fitzgerald). The main characters in the story, Patrick (Kathy Snell), Nicholas (Tina Morasco), and Elizabeth (Dana Rocco) were in a race with Captain Blackbeard (Sandy Giordano) and his pirates; apparatus and tumbling, to get buried treasure. Along the way, they encountered maids who swabbed the deck (Tap), ghosts (Flashlights), wild animals (Modern Dance), natives (Swords). They finally uncovered the buried treasure and celebrated (Finale) in a nearby town. Afterwards they also celebrated the Red team overall victory. Best overall performance was awarded as a tie between tumbling and apparatus; captains Barbara Kupecky and Jackie Rosoff, and Flashlights; captains Lee Ann Nicholson and Rachel Darrow. BLACK The Black team celebrated the ten year reunion of the class of 1999, under the leadership of overall captains Donna Amari and Stacy Stamiatides. and co-captain Marisa DiEllo. The theme took the two main characters Natasha (Karen Semeraro) and Tara (Terry Stager) back to remembering when they were greeted by the peace loving aliens; tumbling and apparatus, led by Marisa DiEllo and Cathy Ramiza. Upon reaching the class reunion, other characters were introduced to the storyline: Cheerleader Tiffany (Lisa Yoder). Cldss Clown Jerry (Ann Corig-liano). Class Brain Elroy (Louisa DiBona-ventura). and Class Hearthrob (Jeff Estler). With a party atmosphere, tables and punchbowls were set up for the reunion guests to enjoy, and exciting entertainment for all was to follow. First we were entertained by the dancing robots; tap led by Cap. Pam Stewart and Maureen Reynolds. Next by the space cheerleaders; pompon's headed by Sandy Vitacco. To top off the reunion entertainment the break-dancers arrived, led by Johnny Torres and Mike Delia, and took best overall for the team. The reunion came to a dose, and Natasha was reunited with her old flame Joel. The dance solo by Natasha was done under the stars; Modern Dance with captains Sue Johnson and Lynn Magee. If in pre-season Boonton was given eight points to distribute as needed during the season, things would have been turned around. One point losses to West Morris and Roxbury by identical 15-14 scores, a 0-0 tie at Hanover Park and a two point loss to Mt. Olive on Thanksgiving Day 9-7 could have become victories. The teams' only win came when conference newcomer visited Wiggins Field. The Bombers beat the Minutemen 26-6. The offense was led by senior captain Rolland Banks. Rolland rushed for a total of 610 yards and 36 points. Each man capably performed the duties of opening lanes for the running backs. The Bombers defensive unit was led by senior captain Todd Drugac and senior nose guard Mike Krok. Todd led the team with 70 tackles (48 assisted-22 solo). Mike trailed right behind with 69 tackles (49 assisted-20 solo). The team finished the season with a 7-7 record. Two girls qualified for the North II State Sectional Meet: Angela Retano qualified and competed in this meet on the uneven bars. The team was composted of seniors; Ralph Coutino, Mark Terwilliger, and Dave Bojcovic; juniors: Rick Pyontek, Bill Reiters, Bob Keane, Geoff White. Ian Black Pearl Lewin and team captain John Miele. The squad had a number of sophomores including: Jack London, Larry Fagan, Audie Manlangit. Mark Marrin, Kevin Petock, Son Wing and Shannon Hinchel. The teams' efforts were inspired by Captain Miele and they often played with vigor and enthusiasm. With a con-vinceable forward line of London, Lewin, Marrin, Wing, Terwillinger and Henchel an indominable midfield of Manlangit, Reifers, Bojcevic and Petock. the offense withheld a mighty force. The awesome defensive power of Pyontek. Keane, White, Fagan and Coutino were shown numerous games. To ice the cake they had the quickness and agility of John Miele in the goal. Coached by Mr. Cucchiara the team accomplished a feat that no other team in the history of Boon ton Soccer had ever achieved ... they were chosen to play the best of the best in the Morris County Soccer Tourney. They played an inspiring game and demon-started they were truly a tough competitor but were outscored 1-0. The team, which played in a strong conference made up of state-ranked school, finished the season with a final record of 5-13-1. Post season honors were awarded to Miele for his incredible goal tending abilities. John was named to the State Soccer Team. Their improvement was noticed by all, including coaches of opposing teams. Hard work and lots of effort surely dominated the practices and games. Because of this, the team was extremely MORE IN ’84 competitive and the scores of every game were close. Along with their continuous hard work and practice, the team not only made the season rewarding, but fun. The last practice of the season was lead by the only two seniors on the team, Lisa Yoder and LeeAnne Nicholson. The season came to a final close with the second annual Field Hockey Banquet attended by players, parents and alumni from last year's team. Despite their record of 3-11-2, the team never let their spirit down and they continued trying to qualify for the states. Although they did not quite make it to state tournament, they finished the season with better skills and even more determination to make next year a definite winning season. FIRST SECTIONAL CROWN FOR CROSS COUNTRY SCOZZAFAVA • LIBERATORE • TLACK SELECTED TO ALL-AREA TEAMS The girls achieved a first this season — a State Sectional Championship (North II Group II). The story actually began last spring when the team started earning money to go to a running camp. Five girls and two boys showed their desire to improve by traveling to Millersville, Pennsylvania to attend the mid-summer training sessions. The girls, led by team Captains Vicki Scozzafava and Noreen Cassidy were eyeing an undefeaed season. Opening date broke that balloon — a loss to Randolph. Undaunted by this defeat the girls ran off a string of eight consecutive wins against conference and non-conference challengers. The first indication of how strong a team they were was at the first invitational meet of the season. The girls won their division of the Morris County Coaches’ Invitational. The following Saturday the teams traveled to Paterson’s Garrett Mountain for the Passaic County Invitational. This time, led by race winning Scozzafava and Samantha Liberatore (4th), the team managed a second place finish. At the Dover “Class” Invitational a week later the girls posted a 1st Place “Combined” win. Scozzafava winning her third race in three years of running at the Dover annual. Teammates Andrea Forte (11th), Liberatore (5th), sophomores Thea Giardina (6th) and Karen Weltner (10th) and frosh Noreen Walsh (9th) each contributed in the win. Hopes for a conference championship were dampened with a second conference loss to West Morris. The results were the same at the Conference Meet: Randolph, West Morris, Boonton The dual meet season ended with victories over Lenape Valley and Whippany Park. In the Counties, Boonton placed fourth, their highest finish in the eight year history of the team. Spirits were extremely high in anticipation of the state sectionals to be run at Warinaco Park In Elizabeth. At the conclusion of the 3+ mile race each girl was able to smile knowing they had run their best race of the season. Their finish: Scozzafava (2nd), Liberatore (12th), Cassidy (after returning from an injury) (15th), Giardina (17th), Walsh (18th), Weltner (20th) and Forte (23rd). After what seemed forever, coaches team tallies were announced Boonton had their first State Sectional victory. Second place Butler was a comfortable eleven points short. The next Saturday the girls, in what seemed to be an anti-climatic race finished 4th in the State Group II Championship. Scozzafava’s third place finish qualified her for the Meet of Champions. In her final race of her high school career, Vicki placed 19th overall in the State of New Jersey. For her effort she was named to the RECORD All-Area Team, the Morris County Coaches Team and the LEDGER All-State Team. Samantha Liberatore was also picked Honorable Mention to both of the Morris County Coaches and RECORD ALL Area Teams. The boys, led by junior captain David Tlack, scored impressive wins over Hanover Park, Whippany Park, Lenape Valley and Mendham. The most enjoyable victory however was the 28 to 29 upset of Parsippany. The 5-8 record the boys posted was good considering only Tlack and sophomore Tom Ackerman had pre-(continued on page 128) (continued from page 127) vious varsity experience. Newcomers senior Stephen Reed and sophomore Bill Peer added unexpected strength to the team. The fifth and equally important position was shared by many of the remaining team members at one time or another over the season. Each of the following runners scored varsity points: juniors August Costanzo and Jim Beger and sophomores Ray Husk, Allan Sheplak, Derk and Derek Beal. The boys made a strong showing in the Morris County Coaches’ Invitational by placing third in their division. A medal performance was also run at the Dover Invitational by the sophomore team of Peer, Husk, Beal, Sheplak and Ackerman. Captain Tlack had an outstanding individual season: five victories in dual meet competition, 8th in the Conference Meet, 11th in the County Meet, 4th at the Dover Invitational, 8th in the Group II Sectionals and 23rd overall in the State Group II Championship Meet. Andrea had the honor of playing first position. This honor allowed her to go against the best players in the area. Allison, at second singles, also played her share of difficult matches and opponents. The team's third singles player accomplished something that has not been done for a long time, an undefeated season. Kim Drost finished with sixteen wins and no losses. Noelle Mann and Christy Guilshan, the first doubles team, worked very hard all season to improve their game and were involved in some of the toughest matches. Tricia Nolan and Jill Manson were newcomers. They both had good form and strokes, but They had some difficultyputting them together during the matches. Despite, perhaps, one of the toughest schedules in the area and a disappointing 3 and 18 record, the boys' varsity basketball team finished the 1984-85 season with a sense of optimism for next year. With the return of six lettermen, Boonton could possibly emerge as one of the top teams in Morris County next season. Leading scorers for the Bombers were Senior Eric McDermott (All-Tournament Team, Montville Christmas Tournament), Juniors John Meiie (Co-Captain), Walter Gibson, and Sophomore Tony Frederico. It isn't often that a high school basketball team has six seniors. It's even more unique when the six girls display the spirit and deliver the performances that this year's seniors did. They were the heart and soul of a team which went 17-7. finished as the fourth ranked team in Morris County and third in the Hills Division of the IHC. This team overcame nu- merous setbacks to complete this highly successful season. Olive and then 18 points three nights later against Parsippany Hills. Lori Mack anchored the defense and was the team's second and leading rebounder. Her free throws. under pressure iced the season opener at Dover and helped preserve a victory at Parsippany Hills. Maureen Kerr endured two knee operations and was able to play only a few minutes at Mt. Olive. Her spirit and support were nonetheless invaluable contributions to this year's success. Co-captain Kim Drost averaged over 11 points per game as the shooting guard. Her 19 point performance at Morris Catholic led a Boonton upset in front of the season's biggest and noisiest crowd. State tournament 137 (Continued on page 138) hopes were dimmed when Kim broke her anke in mid Februdry. Co-captain and point guard Diana Flormann overcame crutches, shin splints and aircasts to put in an outstanding performance. Fier shot at the buzzer beat Morris Hills and her foul shooting put away Millburn. Diana did everything which her position required and more, including an increased scoring role after Kim was injured. Co-captain Karen Decker emerged as one of the areas premier performers. She led Boonton in scoring (14.6) and rebounding (9.8), as well as being an outstanding passer, defender and the floor leader. Her accomplishments this season placed her in the ranks of Boonton's past Most Valuable Players-Sacuk, Voelkner, Custer and Bechtel yet she always placed the team's welfare above her own The seniors leave behind three un- derclass letter winners who displayed the ability and determination to become outstanding varsity players. Allison Allieri started almost every game and was a real defensive standout. Lisa Kohut turned the Morris Catholic game around and developed into a real force in the point. Injuries shortened point guard AH Powers' season but her enthusiasm and spirit never faultered. With this, Boonton sent a record five wrestlers into Region competition. They included: Jim Hardin, John Roon, David Doty, Rodney Roller, and Norman Russo. Beyond this, David Doty became this year's only grappler to enter the state level. Ending their season with outstanding records were John Roon 17-5-1, Dave Doty 20-6-1, and Todd Drugac 19-1. With five seniors leaving, next year's season has an optomistic outlook. Those leaving are John Roon, Royce Stafford, Leon Doty, Todd Drugac. and Frank Sciacca. Royce Stafford, Mike LoRusso. and Scott Colonese 143 BEVACQUA NAMED TO ALL-AREA TEAM The 1984 lacrosse team, under the direction of new head coach Bruce Davis, was not as successful as anticipated. The team struggled to a final record of 5-7. Due to the lack of varsity experience and injuries to key players, this year's team came up short. The team captains were Mike Bevacqua, Paul DeVera and Rich Durkin. The defense was led by senior captain Mike Bevacqua, who won post season honors as 1st Team All-Area Daily Record, 1st Teamm All-Fitch League, 1st Team Citizen's Dream Team and Honorable Mention, All-State. Juniors Mike Krok, Greg Renza and Pete Franklin gave excellence on the field. Scott Van Duyne and Kevin Freehill, who transferred from mid-field, gave the defense additional depth. Goalie position was taken over by junior, Jim Schwartz. Jim received Honorable Mention selection to the Daily Record All-Area Team for his efforts. Sean Charney was alternate goalie for the squad. The team's mid-field lines were led by seniors: Todd Eggert, Tim Cassidy and George Mokrzecki. Mid-field tricaptain Rich Durkin was sidelined by an injury after the first game. A pre-season goal of attaining a spot in the Daily Record's Top Ten was accomplished. The team qualified and entered the NJSIAA Tennis Tournament for the first time in many years. The goal of a winning season was almost accomplished as the boys fought hard and produced a 10-12 season, 5 meets were lost by 3-2 score. This years 1984-85 returning tennis players are: captains Jay Shah and Kevin Guozzo others returning are Mike Pappas, Bruce Webber, Larry Fagan. Newcomers to this year's squad are: D. Beal. R. Levin 149 150 BOMBER POST WINNING SEASON The hard work of some very talented individuals striving together produced the first winning season in many years of Boon ton baseball. Under the leadership of Angela Questa, in his first year as head coach, the team recorded an impressive 12-10 record. Coach Questa attributes the success of the team to: Everybody on the team did their part. When asked about the character of the team he commented: They were a fine bunch of men and a pleasure to work with. Of the ten losses, only two of the games were out of reach: all other games were decided by two runs or less. Big wins over highly ranked West Morris and Parsippany Hills and an outstanding victory over state ranked Caldwell enabled the Bombers to enter the County Tournament for the first time in recent years. The season ended with a heartbreaking loss to Mill-burn in extra innings in the state tournament. The Boon ton baseball team fielded one of the best hitters from Morris County in the person of senior captain Ron DeGia-copo. Ron finished the season with a .478 batting average. Drugac. P. Ssheer and E. Duderich second highest in the county. He hit eight homeruns including an extra inning grand-slam to defeat Caldwell. Ron was selected to the First Team by the Morris County Coaches, North II Group II State First Team and All-State-Third Team. Due to an injury, the Bombers leading hurler, Mike McHugh could not pitch to his potential. Although he did not throw, Mike finished second in hitting behind DeGiacopo with a .448 average with five homeruns. The defense of the team was also very strong. The infield, led by senior Joe Blauner and Rich Anderson committed only eight errors all season long. Glen Haddad and Eddie Jones were factors in the success of the defense. Although the varsity softball team did not do as well as they hoped to, many positive things came out of the season. Only one senior was lost to graduation, Lisa Bechtel, leaving a squad of experienced members needed for the up-coming season. The team's record was under .500, but the team still possessed a better than average defense, and a superb batting staff. The one department that was weak was the pitching. Hopefully that position will be strengthened by Nicole Bonanni, Denise Doty and Nicole Jean Van Riper Schlenger. There will also be a few other back-up pitchers. The team for the 1985 season will be led by Nancy Connerton, Bethann De-Bree, Maria De Giacopo, Chrissy Soto, Lisa Smitka and Jean Van Riper. These varsity veterans have been playing together since their freshman year when they won both the Freshmen and Junior Varsity Conference Championships. A great deal is expected of the 1985 Varsity softball squad. This money, along with previous money raised, went toward the Junior Senior Holiday Dinner Dance and also the Junior Senior Prom. There are several juniors that should be mentioned for their involvement in school activities. Tina Morasco was the SRA Corresponding Secretary and also the band drum major. David Doty was the SRA Vice President and a varsity wrestler. John Mieie made all-state goalie for soccer. Samantha Liberatore, a member of the Sectional Championship Cross Country Team also qualified for the Junior Olympics. Bob Keane was the Region II Representative of the NASC Executive Board. There are many other juniors who participated in varsity sports, JV sports, GSA, cheerleading, band, the play and other clubs and activities. The Class of '86 is a very involved class. Freshmen Orientation and Freshmen Night gave the nearly 250 members of the class a chance to get to know one another better.
