It is a conclusion to one chapter of our lives and yet an introduction to another. It marks, for some, the last year of formal education before pursuing new endeavors. Eighty-four also ends the unique relationship with faculty members, friends, or family who have continued on page 6 (Top) Lunch period crowd (Center) Sue Austin, Christine Roach, Leon Doty. Robin Weitzman, Mark and Michelle Evans. (Left) More Breakers. Mike Delia and Johnny Torres. (Above) Al Dykstra, Paul Booth and Ray Roller continued from page 3 helped guide us through these past four years. In addition, it marks the “final” chance we have to participate in the numerous activities offered, including the successful sports program as evidenced by this year’s Varsity Football team (5-1-1 at press time) and Girls’ Cross Country squad (9-1). Both were ranked in Morris County’s Top Ten. The interesting and diversified activities and special events included Spirit Week, Band Competitions, the Tailgate Party, field trips, Homecoming and Boon-ton’s first Community Day ever. Eighty-four, then, becomes a year of reflection. (Top) Paul Booth (Above) First Boonton Community Day 6 We began the new decade, 1980, as freshmen to an unknown building, where we would eventually adapt and learn to function in conjunction with the school. Although we were fearful and bewildered by the new arrangements and options that high school offered, we had the initiative to take the challenge of dealing with the difficulties that would inevitably confront us. In turn, we found ourselves putting forth countless hours of our time in our studies and in non-scholastic activities, knowing that decisions in our future lay in store. (Above) Adam “Sloz” Westervelt (Right) Sue Austin 10 Conversely, 1984 signifies a new beginning, whether we seek a future in higher education or the responsibility of a full time occupation. Whichever path we follow, a major change will result. (Left! Community projects: day care Christmas party, Thanksgiving welfare drive, Blood Drive and Daffodil’s for Cancer Society showed that the students of BHS were concerned for groups outside the school. The 1983-84 SR A officers who were involved in many national, state and county student council programs and projects hope that the students of BHS will remember them for their service to the students and faculty of Boonton High School. Mr. Walter Angilly is, and has been for the past 18 years, the SR A advisor. This is also the fourth year that Mr. Angilly is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils. 75 President: Dan Gregory The Boonton Broadcasting Club made an incredible comeback after two months of technical difficulties. A trouble filled P. A. system forced the club back to broadcasting from the front office that was the first time Boonton Broadcasting Club since 1979. The club successfully fixed the system on January 5, and resumed its normal 7:25 to 7:55 routine. Perhaps this year’s greatest success was a new fondraiser for the BBC, the Rock Roll Jersey Sale. Money from the sale went towards the club’s field trip and prizes for the Top 25 Poll Contest. This year’s Top 25 Poll Committee was headed by Ed Baldwin. The rapid increase in show quality by all members, especially the club’s newest members will insure another successful year in 1984-85. The Boonton High School Marching Band enjoyed one of their most productive seasons ever in 1983. As the band took the field under the direction of Mr. Joseph Szabo, they knew this was their year to be “Number Uno”. This attitude led the group to recapture the Chapter Five Championship Trophy for the second consecutive season. Tina Morasco, this year’s Drum Major, led the band onto the field with this attitude to win the hearts of the judges as well as the fans. And win their hearts they did. The band, enroute to their Chapter title also outscored all competitors at the Morris Knolls, Governor Livingston, Jonathan-Day-ton and Penn’s Grove Competitions, The band was Group 1 Champion at Elizabeth and Third, Group I in the Atlantic Coast Championships. This year’s field repetoire included: “Body Electric”, “Music”, “Tiger of San Pedro”, “Rain”, “Somewhere in the Night”, and “Over the Rainbow”. The 1983 edition of the Marching Band consisted of 75 members who practiced over 400 hours to make every show perfection. This year’s soloists were: Marc Buono-core, Tim Gerds, Samantha Liberatore, Jason Shafron, Scott Zaph, Fred Hurford and Bob Kean. Cheerleading is divided into two separate seasons, fall and winter. All interested students are able to “try out” to become members of the various squads. At “try outs”, the participants must do the required stunts in front of a panel of judges who score the students on her or his performance. Those who attain the highest scores are placed on the squads that they have chosen previously. Once the squads are selected, they are urged to practice and organize themselves in order to be prepared for the days that they have to cheer. Although quite demanding, cheerleading remains a worthwhile activity because one is able to represent the school and also have a fun time in the process. The executive committee with Ron DiGia-copo, as president, Andy Chappel, Mike Walsh and Mike Krok formed a schedule that included two leagues each composed of five teams. The senior red team had an easy time rising to the top of its division and remained the only unbeaten team at the end of the regular season play. The Black team and Rutt’s Revenge battled it out for their league supremacy with the Black earning the right to challenge the Red for the championship. The championship game with a quick exchange of goals, but from then on it was all Black, with a 6-2 victory and the disignation as the 1 team of the season. Stellar performances were turned in by Sergio Moraga, John Ventrice and Ron DiGiacopo as Constance scoring threats. Solid defense was demonstrated by Andy Szamoszegi and Greg Ringlieb. Goalie honors went to Tom Voelkner and Steve Watson. Freshman Kevin Petock garned Rookie of the Year Honors. 90 The Indoor Hockey Club completed its third highly successful season. The co-ed club seems to be gaining in popularity with more and more students forming teams and becoming involved. Directed by Mr. Prehodka, the league now has two nights of action a week. At press time observers are wondering if the powerful Green Team can repeat as “Cup” Champions. 91 Morris County Vo-Tech • 1983-84 (Above) Ken Demen-Auto Body (Right) Lance Killian, Rick Juliano and Bill Smith-Diesel Mechanics (Center above) Richard Durkin-Construction Trades (Right) Andrea Bucher-Child Care Morris County Vocational-Technical High School offers training in more than twenty areas not covered by local school districts. The club officers for the year were: President-Sandy Vitacco, Vice President-Lee Ann Nicholson, Treasurer-Kacie White and Corresponding Secretary-Ker-ry Nicholson. The club advisor for 1984 was Mrs. Palumbo. 94 War Games The Wargames Club meets on the average of once every two weeks, for 2 to 6 hours. The club is involved with strategic games which vary from fantasy future to historical simution. This year the club has aquired some strategic games to be played with the library’s Apple Microcomputer. Another first for the club was entering the Football Tailgate Party Competition. The club received the third place award for their entry. Club officers for this year were: President Fred .Hurford, Vice-President-Jim Miller, Treasurer-James Jensen. The club’s commanding officer is Mr. Nicholas D’Amato. Filmmakers Media The Iron Hills Math League has 18 schools involved in this activity. The Boon-ton team consists of two, 5 member teams. The contest is waged in two parts; the relay which ask the questions of Algebra I, Geometry, Alegebra II, Senior Math and Calculus; to win this part of the game every member has to have the correct answer. The second part, is a team question on time. The first team with the correct answer wins the round. Presently there are only 3 meets a year. This year Boonton was host for one of these matches. Club officers were: Captain Kriss Acker- man, Co-Captain Mike Eoga, Andy Szamoss-zegi, Crag Praschan, Nicole Bonanni, Bill Huebsch, Kristen Rigg, Mark , Ted Willard, Jay Reither, Sanjay Das, Tom Mueller, Buddy Farrell and Bob Kean. Mrs. Calabria was responsible for preparing the teams for competition. 95 The Boonton High School Concert Band is basically the same group of musicians that make up the Marching band. When, after the Thanksgiving football game, the band stops marching and practices indoors. The band performs at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The difference between the music played in marching and concert seasons is that concert music is usually more complex because the musicians can keep the music on stands rather than having it committed to memory. Also the band is able to play longer programs at the concerts. Mr. Szabo directs the band and conducts at concerts. % 97 A select group made up of Choir members and several students from the general student body performed as the ‘Varsity Voices’. Their routines consisted of a cap-pella renditions of Christmas, Gospel, Blues and Pop music. These were included in the total program of the concert choir. This group was also summoned to perform at the traditional Boonton Township tree lighting service in December. The Concert Choir is a course for those interested in gaining musical knowledge. This year, under the direction of Mrs. Cindy Verost, thirty members of the choir performed two annual concerts. The ‘Prelude to Christmas’ was performed on December 15th, the Spring Concert, on April 13th. During the past year the choir also entertained audiences at Neil’s New Yorker and at the Corporate Headquarters of Drew Chemical. After their concert Neil’s New Yorker presented an appreciation award to the choir for their annual concerts. The group took a trip to New York City on March 28th. They saw the Broadway Musical ‘42nd Street’ and toured Lincoln Center. To raise money for the trip they sold candy. The trip and fundraisers were a huge success. This year’s officers were: President-Mi-lissa Howell, Vice-President-Bev Meyers, Secretary-Wendy Pappas, Treasurers-Marc Bounocore and Ann Corigliano, Librarians-Pam Huizinga and Lyn Garro. Robe Chairpersons were Trish Parcells and Robin Man-ley. 98 The concert choir piano accompainsts for the 1983-84 school year were Ann Corig-liano and Lori DenDulk. 99 The Clothing Club meets for the purpose of giving all students in the school the opportunity to come in after school to either learn how to sew or to improve sewing skills. This year two advisors shared the club’s responsibilities, Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Kucek. The major activity each year is the Spring Fashion Show and Tea. The clothes modeled are made by the students in clothing classes or in the after school club. Clothing Club Distributive Education Distributive Education is a program which allows students to leave school early each day to go to work. The program, in effect for 15 years, currently involves 42 students. Mr. Prentice is responsible for DE’s success by preparing these students for employment in areas of retailing, wholesaling, advertising, insurance, management, real estate, investments, decorating, sales, radio and television. Participants benefit from this by being able to enter the business world with on-the-job training before high school graduation. Many students are immediately employed by the co operating businesses, while others op to attend college to further their career background. 100 Wampus The 1983-84 Wampus was a small but competent group of students. Concerned with publishing the school newspaper the students on the Wampus wrote aricles, typed them, layed out the proof sheets, proofread the final copies, folded the completed paper and placed free copies in teachers mailboxes for all the students of B. Editors Lisa Sorensen and Donna Amari along with section editors and their staffs spent long hours completing assignments. These assignments included layouts, designs, journalism and editing. A new aspect in the yearbook class specified that the class be a semester course as opposed to a full year course. Since there was less class time to complete the book, the staff worked harder than ever. After the courses had ended, volunteers were recruited to finish the book. 102 YEARBOOK STAFF 1984 (Seated) Lisa Westenberger, Sue Johnson. Donna Amari. Maureen Reynolds. Jennifer Olson. They were 0-4 in the Iron-Hills Conference. The team was led by senior captains, Donna Amari and Karen Semeraro. The team consisted of two other seniors, Terri Steger and Laura Porter. The Juniors were Angela Retano and Marissa Di Elo. Three strong sophomores were Elisa Be-vacqua, Erin Yasson and Debbie Hopkins. The team was coached by Mrs. Costello and assistant coach Mrs. Strothers. Although the girls had a loosing season, they worked hard. Unfortunately five teams in the conference cancelled meets, giving the Bombers less of a chance to have a winning season. Two girls qualified for the Sectional meet in the vault. They were Erin Yasson and Laura Porter. The Bombers gave it their all at the county meet. Substitutions at the last minute were needed. Special recognition goes to the JV members who competed in this meet. The 1983 version of the Boonton Field Hockey Team came out of the darkness this season. The team's determination and drive surprised opponents with their keener understanding of the game. Their improved fundamentals kept most matches quite close. The anticipation of playing in their first state competition was the highlight of the season. Unfortunately the “Lady Bombers were beaten and eliminated the week records decided who was eligible. The team, coached by Ms. Lynda Re-byak, finished the season with a 3-9-2 record. Other varsity players who contributed to this improved season were: Trish Ross, Patti McCormick, Donna Pickett, Becky Smith, Judy Blowers, Nicole Bonanni, Chris Wekilsky, Ba-pasha Shorn, Linda Fengya and Freshman Atienne Benitez. Managers for the team were: Amy Harper and Trixie Homeijer. Girls’ 9-1 record best ever! The 1983 Boys Cross Country team finished their season with a 4-8 record. Wins were against Montville, Hanover Park, Len-ape Valley, and Mountain. This Year’s team was led by Senior Co-captains Steve Forte and Tim Nexon. Sophomore Dave Tlack helped in the team scoring by consistently finishing in the top ten. Dave was also Boonton’s first finisher in the County, Conference, and State-Sectional Meets. Other team members in the top Varsity seven were Sophomores: Walter Gibson, Freshman: Morgan Flemming, Chris Weiss, and Tom Ackerman. This Freshman trio along with Gibson and Tlack will be a strong nucleus for next year’s Varsity squad. Co-captains seniors Steven Forte and Tim Nexon shared honors for leading place finishers in dual meets. The addition of Junior transfer student Julie Williams, newcomer Sam Libera-tore, and Freshman Thea Giordano added to a strong nucleus from last year. This year’s team launched the girl on one of the most successful seasons in their short history. From a mediocre (2-8) season in “82”, the girls have become a power in Morris County being ranked fourth. Their outstanding record of (9-1) was among one of the best in the area. They were second in the Hills Division of the Conference, fourth in the Morris County Championship Meet. The girls went on to finish fourth in the Group II, Section II Championship Meet, and sixth in the Group II state wide. The rest of the girls varsity squad consisted of Juniors: Noreen Cassidy, Julie Williams, and Vicki Scozzafava, Sophomores: Andrea Forte, and “Sam” Libera-tore and Freshmen: Thea Giordano. Senior Captain Lynn Grenevich will be missed in the line-up next fall. In addition to the girls having an excellent season, Vicki Scozzafava proved herself as one of the top runners in the area with her second place finish in both the State-Sectional and Group II Championship Meets. Qualifying for the AAU Meet in California, Vicki was the tenth runner to finish in the National Championship. 1983 Cross Country Team: (Kneeling) C. Weiss. M Fleming. B. Pierson. B. Lach. The squad, mostly juniors coached by Mr. Donnelly, finished their season with a 6-17-1 record. At first singles, John Cuozzo (4-19) relied on his power and placement. Sergio Moraga (6-16) at second singles gave the opposition a lot of close matches that resulted in three set decisions. John Ventrice remained at third singles with a 9-14 effort. Most of his victories were achieved by keeping the ball « m M I I W 130 in play consistantly. Kevin Cuozzo and Steven Forte combined at first doubles. Kevin, a first year player, improved greatly as the season progressed. Steven, a two year veteran at doubles, relied on his “keep the ball in play” theory to frustrate opponents. They ended the season 5-17 record. Mike Pappas and Jay Shah rounded out the squad at second doubles with a 4-17-1 record. Other members of the team were: Cliff “the Rutt” Rutter, Mike Eoga, Craig Pras-chan. Bill Huebsch, Adam Westervelt, Mark Palladino and SanTiago Rico. Rutter saw some action at doubles in the latter part of the season. Playing what was probably the toughest schedule in the county, the boy’s varsity basketball team finished the 1983-84 season with a 6 and 16 record. Even though the team lost many close games, they never lost their enthusiasm, desire or dedication. The leading scorers for the team were seniors Mike McHugh and Aaron Samples. Other players who contributed significantly were seniors: Joe Blauner, Jim Bolcar, Jim Tillage, Dave Edwards, Steven Forte and Frosh Tony Frederico. Ranked third in Morris County and seeded third in both the state and county tournaments, they played up through the semi-finals in both and finished with twenty wins and seven losses. This was a team without a superstar, but one to which each girl gave her best effort, overachieved, and sacrificed personal goals for team success. And what success! Second place in the Iron Hills Conference, Hills Division with a 13-3 record. A 22 point fourth quarter to come back and beat Randolph. A 47-30 textbook blow-out of West Morris and a list of come from behind thrillers. A Victory over powerful Irvington in the Christmas Tournament. Playing in the semi-finals at County College. A 36-15 humbling of Morris Catholic in the “newspaper” game. A 32-31 thriller over Pequannock in the State Tournament. For individual accomplishments: Kim Drost was instant offense and led the team in scoring and shooting. Co-captain, Lisa Bechtel was a legend on defense in the point and the leading rebounder. Karen Decker did a fine job defending the opponent’s best forward, took the ball to the hoop and led the team in foul shots. Diane Flormann led the team in assists, steals, forced turnovers, free throw accuracy and bruises. Laura Porter was a mover, shaker and press breaker as well as the all purpose guard of the team. Maureen Kerr provided instant defensive pressure, excellent passing and acknowledged versatility. Lori Mack gave the team depth and inside help. (continued on page 138) 137 Andrea Axt, out with a broken leg in mid-season, never the less gave support and encouragement to her team mates throughout the season. In spite of the many injuries, the team had many positive highlights. In the first annual, Quad Tournament, hosted by Boonton, the Boonton wrestlers manhandled a very strong DePaul squad 39-21. Impressive victories over arch rivals Randolph and Montville were also posted this season. The victory over Randolph was a first in Boonton wrestling history. The team goals were to finish with a .500 record and to finish among the top five teams in the district. The district goal was realized but, the team fell one victory short of achieving their seasonal goal, finishing the season at 7 wins, eight losses. Directed by coaches Mr. Rizk and newcomer Mr. Sweeny, the squad's efforts gained them a tie for the Fitch Division Championship (4-1). The 1983 team established three team scoring records during the season: most goals for an attack unit (69), most assists in one game (16 vs. Livingston) and most points, goals assists, in one game (33 vs. Hanover Park and again against Livingston.) The 1983 co-captains were Jack Pe-tonak and Brian Boyer. The future looks bright for Boonton Lacrosse, the JV team, under Coach Davis finished with an 11-2 record. Her key victories helped win three matches, Morris Hills, Pequannock, and West Morris. record in years Andrea Axt had an eight-ten record at second singles. Some of her most difficult wins were against Pequannock, Mountain Lakes, Mount Olive and Morris Knolls. She also holds the record for marathon points, games and sets. Allison Webber at third singles was a close second for long points and games. She did very well for her first year as a singles player. During the Morris County Tournament Allison defeated two opponents before she lost her first set. The team of Kim Drost and Jean De-Vaney compiled a record of 4-11 at first doubles. Their record does not fully show their playing abilities. Kim’s “lob” combined with Jean’s ground strokes made some excellent ground strokes made some excellent points. Six of these losses were match sets. Chris Roach and Christy Guilshan were the best second double team in years. Christy’s ground strokes and Chrises “put aways’ at the net were an excellent combination. Noel Mann also got her chance to play for the varsity team. Most of the games were catch-up baseball. But when you consider there were only two seniors, Larry Sauchelli and Hector Martinez, among the starting line-up, one must reevaluate. The team gained confidence with a shut-out victory (5-0) over W. O. Mountain. Aaron Samples was the winning pitcher. Two other games both won by junior pitcher Mike McHugh, were outstanding efforts by the young squad. The first, a decisive 8-2 win over a strong Hanover Park team. The second, an extra inning marathon against Parsippany Hills, was decided via a Ron DiGiacopo homerun in the home half of the thirteenth inning. McHugh registered 18 strike outs in the 3-2 victory. Juniors Joe Blauner, Mike McHugh, Ron DiGiacopo, Rich Anderson, Jim Bol-car and Aaron Samples should form a strong nucleus for the 1984 campaign. 151 Lisa Smitka Diane DiGuiseppe Lisa Becthel Laura Porter Marie DiGiacapo (Seated) M DiGiacapo. Highlights of the season were their first round win in both the County and State Tournaments over West Morris (6-2), and Hillside (5-0).
