ECHOES • 1983 HANDS OF TIME BOONTON HIGH SCHOOL At this time of the year, when the days until graduation get fewer and fewer, we remember our experiences at BHS. It has been four years that we’ve been here, hand in hand, striving to reach a mutual goal: GRADUATION! When we first entered the halls as freshmen, we held on tightly not only to our handbooks, but also to our hopes of succeeding. Many memorable events have occurred that will help us to remember this special time in our lives. Since Freshmen Year, we've seen many world and local events. The Boonton Band climbed to an unbelievable high, which once would have been thought unobtainable. n The football team, although they had many setbacks, came together our Junior Year to defeat one of the better teams in the area-Randolph. At the same time, eliminated their opponents hopes of reaching the State playoffs. There were other occurrences, however, that were not so pleasant, but equally memorable. In the past year, our generation lost several movie greats: John Belushi from one of our favorite TV Shows, Sat -urday Night Live”, Natalie Wood, and Henry Fonda. This year, students and families throughout the nation were shocked over an incident concerning the tampering of TYLF.NOL capsules. Evidently, the capsules were poisoned with cyanide, causing several deaths and a reluctant attitude towards continued on page 7 buying over-the-counter medicines. The incident spread even further with the poisoning of other non-prescription drugs, and tragically, childrens' Halloween candy. Because of such happenings, parents were skeptical about allowing their children to celebrate the holiday. New Hampshire actually banned Halloween, and the turn-out of children in our area was considerably small. We experienced the development of special effects in the film-making industry Exemplified in such movies as E.T., Poltergeist and the continuing Star Wars saga. Boonton High School took its own step into the future this year by developing a new computer science course. continued from pa e 5 Another development was that of Punk and Preppy” styles. Last year especially, we noticed the popularity of this trend, but this year we returned to a more individual style of dress. In national sports this year, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, four games to three to win the World Series. Other sports news this year was the Professional Football strike. Several weeks into the 1982 season sports fans across the country were amazed and disappointed to learn that the football players had gone on strike. Unfortu -nately, the problem was not resolved, and cancellation of the season seemed definite. Academically, we were the first class to endure a full four years of the honors program. The teachers and students who lent a hand in the program contributed a lot of time and effort into making it a success. Similarly, we were the first class as well as the first school to hold a prom at the Parsippany Hilton, an event we will all remember as one of the highlights of our Junior Year. Spirit Week was once again a big success, having many participants. The calendar of events’ consisted of: Hat T Shirt Day, Punk Western Day, Army Navy Day, Sweat Shirt Day, and Red and Black Carnation Day. 12 As Mr. Kane stated, this year especially can be considered a true year of cooperation,” not only between the teachers and students, but also among the seniors. This year we finally came together to form the Class of 1983 , a group of friends who will all feel a loss leaving Boon-ton High School and who will never forget all of the times we've spent together. The Hands of Time” that once seemed almost motionless have hastened and caught us by surprise. The laughter, the tears, the faces and the memories will linger in our thoughts as we say goodbye to our school, and to those we have come to love throughout our days at BHS. Over the past few years, student participation in many activities has been decreasing. The SRA sought to involve more students in both community and school activities. For students desiring to help their community, the SRA sponsored the Thanksgiving drive, the Day-Care Christmas Party and assisted with BOUNCE (Boonton's United Community Effort) Program. Students were also given the chance to help with dances, activities and fund raisers for various clubs and classes. Hopefully, the efforts of the SRA, led by president Hadrian Alegarbes, will lead to increased student participation in school and community life. The officers consist of President: Steven Ough, Vice President: Ron DiGiacopo, Treasurer: Andy Chappell, Secretary: Mike Walsh. The indoor soccer league consisted of ten teams, the two top teams were the Purple and Blue which competed for first place the outcome was the Purple teams as first place the score was 5 to 2. The remaining 8 teams were green and red which were tied for third place. Other teams were Gold, Yellow, Gray and White. The two freshman teams were Black and Brown. The soccer league played during the months of December through February and played on Monday and Thursday nights. The indoor hockey league is run by Mr. Prehodka with assistance from Hadriin Alegarbes. This year eight teams were formed - six male and two female squads that played on Wednesday nights. 73 This year's selection of the homecoming queen and her court proved to be a special event at BUS. Every student has his or her idea of what qualities a queen should have. All the girls involved in the competition were blessed with these unique gifts. The queen and her court were revealed at the half-time ceremonies at the BHS-Mountain football game. Freshman court member Lisa Procko commented, I was very surprised and very nervous. The first thing that entered my mind when they called my name was 'Oh my gosh, me?! I didn’t think I deserved it.” Sophomore Maria DiGiacapo said, 1 was really happy to have won. To me, all the sophomore girls were winners.” Junior Kim Procko responded, I was totally baffled at winning. 1 had a lot of fun riding in the Rabbit. The 1982 Homecoming Queen was Alisa DePalo. It was really exciting and I was very scared. Winning totally shocked me. I want to thank everyone for making the event so special. I hope other people don't think I'll change because of it.” Sophomore Court Freshman Court 74 Alisa De Palo Crowned 1982 Queen Furthermore, this year's court featured a rarity: a sister combination of Lisa and Kim Procko in the court at the same time. The last time this occurred was many years back. Lisa and Kim are only the third sister team to accomplish this. The other finalists were as follows: Freshmen, Alisa Be-vacqua and Laura Peiron; Sophomores, Amy Taylor, Michelle Fengya and Coleen Nolan; Juniors, Janet Bolcar, Karen Parisi and Laura Porter; and Seniors Kim Delia, Renee Koeppel, Leighann Obenhuber and Norma Fluebscher. Congratulations should be extended to Sue Lowenstein and the Homecoming Committee for a job well done. The spectators at the game and the candidates for the queen and her court were treated to a touch of elegance as the girls were driven to their eagerly waiting escorts in a Jaguar and a Volkswagen convertible. The queen and her court, once chosen, were paraded around the football field in the convertible. The whole event went flawlessly and met the approval of the participants and the spectators alike. Szabo, they knew this was their year to be NUMBER ONE. Valerie Taylor, this year's drum major led the band on the field with an attitude to win the hearts of the judges and the fans. This year's repetoire was as follows: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Ya-kity Sax (the Drum Solo), Evita ”, (the 1982 rendition) and Believe in Yourself’ from the Wiz. This SUPER” band consisted of eighty-five members who worked a total of over 400 hours to make every show perfect. The band parents, instructors and fans all gave them a hand toward making this year a high scoring season”. This was called Band Appreciation Day”, not only because the band performed but also because there was a luncheon honoring them on that day. This year the band held their traditional band banquet at which senior awards and letters were presented. Special thanks to Mr. Szabo and assistant director Mrs. Cindy Verost for all their help in contributing to the bands success. by Jean-Michel Juliano 79 Band Front Adds . . . As the 1982 Marching Band received it's honors, the band front was a major, contributing factor to it's successes. The front units added their own particular style, color and visual rhythm to the band. The Boonton Band Front took home three individual competitive awards, as well as a reputation for being a truly, proficient front unit. Each squad, however, experienced the successes, disappoints, and personal achievements. The Pom-Pon squad experienced several drastic changes in style this year. First, the girls changed from Boonton's traditional double pompons to single pons. This change, although it was only minor, brought a clearer more defined look to their routines. Secondly, the squad added a more professional look to the band, converting to new competitive uniforms. These new uniforms enabled the squad to blend in for the first time, thereby complementing the band proper, while working together to receive high, competitive honors. The Rifle Squad, led by captain Claire Mahoney, proved itself to be a very versatile squad. They used not only rifles, but also learned to skillfully perform with sticks, pom-pons, flags and tambourines. The instructor, Mike Lovito, worked long hours with the squad to perfect their routines. At home football games, the rifle squad, as well as flag captain, Barbara Pickett, doubled as Boon-ton's Honor Guard in the playing of our National Anthem. Determined, dedicated workers might be a good name for the 1982 Flag Squad. The season all started when the members of the squad, old and new, got together at summer practices and band camp. This was followed by after school and night rehearsals. The flag instructor, Mr. Bob Honan returned for his third season. All ten members of the squad contributed greatly to the success of the band front and the band overall. 1982 Pom-Pon Squad: (Standing) N. Juliano, Captain D. Rogalski, Co-Captain L. O'Sullivan, S. The main function involves entertaining the students with music and informing them of school activities and current events in daily radio programs from 7:25 to 8:55 every morning. The B.B.C's goal is professional quality within these shows, encouraging its members to develop their abilities to communicate. The Club officers this year were President-Lisa Sorenson, Vice-President in charge of promotion-Suezi Darrow, Vice-President in charge of programming-Tony Landolfi, Secretary Frank Britton and Treasurer-Da -vid Runfeldt. Mr. Miller continued to serve as the club's advisor. This year the B.B.C. also went to tour NBC's facilities. Under the leadership of Steven Onopa, President, and James Yunan, Vice-President, and the supervisor Mrs. La Porta, this creative group provided B.H.S. students with informative and entertaining Films and video projects. Members learned how to use equipment, view films, enter contests, and attend special vi-deo film workshops. Let us hope this year was the first of a long run. The Leslie Booth Library Media center is the distribution point for all the school’s hardware and software including books. In order to bring these materials to both students and faculty, the Sound Squad has become a vital portion of the Media Members. There are about twenty media members, male and female, freshmen to seniors, who take time out from their free periods to help in the li-brary media center. The media members combine the talents of the clerical and the machine-minded student. They learn the necessary procedures to assist in running the media center at the circulation desk copy machines and in the office or they learn how to operate the different equipment. Mrs. Schindler and Mrs. Kanischak are the advisors and provide the necessary training. They also issue monthly passes for those members who deliver equipment and assist teachers in operating it. One specialized new skill has been added this year to enter circulation data into the media center's Apple computer. Beginning with September 1982 all circulation was automated. This year’s officers were Tom Mueller, President; Mark Rigg, Vice-President; Jean-Michel Juliano, Secretary; Jason Comstock and Kurt Katzgrau, Equipment managers; James Yunan, S.R.A. representative and holding the two new positions were Craig Prashan as circulation manager and Edward Shiflett as Audio manager. The circulation manager has to check that all the records are correct on the computer’s circulation data disk and also that they are deleted when materials are returned. The Audio engineer has to check out and clean audio equipment, make duplicate cassettes for teachers and copies records in cassette form. The very enthusiastic and cooperative group of media members will continue to be available to all and will make the center a success. Written by Jean-Michel Juliano 88 Expressions Expressions, the literary magazine, gave the students with creative ability a chance to express themselves through art-work, poems, plays and short stories. It also gave insight into the working of computer programs. This was the first year of its publication and it is certain that Expres-seions is an asset to the school. This years officers: Editor-Mark Seelinger Art Editor-Mike Wise Secretary-Lainie Cannizzaro Treasurer-Mark Rigg Advisor-M. Zanella The whole staff deserves a hand for all the work they've done. Wampus For news of sporting events, activities and generally what's happening around school, the many students rely on the Wampus. The newspaper is written, assembled and distributed by the staff under the supervision of the advisor, Mr. Angilly. The students favorite features are the ever popular Sleuth and the scoop on sports. In order to earn money for publication costs, the Wampus sponsors one of Boonton’s annual activities-the Valentine Day Carnation Sale. Congratulations to Editor-in-Chief Susan Lowenstein and her hardworking staff. 89 Yearbook is a course which was designed to give students experience in photography, journalism, publication and layout formats. Under the direction of Gene Horton and chief editors Jac-que Embley and Maureen Kane the staff pulled together and worked on new, exciting, and creative ideas. In order to have a successful yearbook the staff must have organization, dedication and determination towards their new creation. Without these motives a yearbook would not exist. This year's staff did an outstanding job, However, without the help of the advisor Mr. Horton the staff could not have done nearly as well. Mr. Horton is greatly appreciated by the staff and the editors! Every year, these individuals are chosen for membership by the faculty on the basis of their leadership, scholarship, character and service qualities. This year's members worked together with their advisor, Mrs. C. Strucko, to raise money for scholarships. The 1982-83 officers were President Ronald Maurer, Vice-President Laurie O'Sullivan, Treasurer Alisa DePalo and Secretary David Schwartz. The NHS also received substantial contributions from former members toward their cause. These combined funds were presented in May, to several deserving students in an effort to lessen the burden of their college costs and to recognize their hard work and dedication. Written by Jean-Michel Juliano 99 The Black team entered the hearts of the audience with The Spirit of Christmas,” under the leadership of overall captains Kathy Rafferty and Doreen Amari, and Co- Captain Julie Bamford. When ten year old Becky asked Santa for a special gift, Santa told his elves; tumbling and apparatus, captain Donna Amari, that he wanted them to make a special gift. Because of the snow storm; modern captains, Annida Moscarini and Pam Stewart, Rudolph; floor exercise, Connie Ward helped Santa fight the storm. After storm was over, Becky watched the little kids, Pon-Pom captains Janice Vnenchak and Angela Bonnani. The event won overall. It was the night before Christmas and all the mice were up and about, Tinikling captains, Patti Boland, Kim Blood and Loreen Hoppi. Up on the House top tapped Santa's reindeer captains, Suzanne Olson and Terri Hoos. The special gift Becky got was a musical ballerina, soloed by Kathy Rafferty. 100 Go West!” was the theme for the Red team. The overall captains were Maria Tamburri and Diane Amadi and Co-Captain Renee Koeppel. In search of their father, Lori and Melissa went through the treacherous western wilderness trying to find him. Characters were performed by Lisa Castellana as Melissa, Renee Koeppel as Lori, Peggy Osbar as Uncle Lucifer, Janet Bolcar, Lisa Bellini, and Sheri Nicholson all played cowboys, Aimee Gasprich, as a miner, Barbara Fatovic as Jack, Maria Tamburri as Minnie Pearl, Leigh Anne Obenhuber as Deadwood Dan, Sandy Giordano as the Father, Lisa Bechtel and Patrice Fitzgerald played the horse. Tumbling and apparatus snuck their way in to the scene, as cowboys and Indians led by Leigh Anne and Stephanie Tamburri. Roping their way onto the floor was lassos led by Eileen Connerton. Captain Barbara Fatovic led modern as the ghosts spooked the audience. The best overall performance was flashlights led by Aimee as gold miners. Tap charged their way into the scene as a calvery, led by Joanne Pappas and Liz Heff. The show was completed with a Hoe-Down. 101 DE COE For Career Bound Students Distributive Education has almost doubled its size since the beginning of the program fifteen years ago. Students are able to leave school early which enables them to persue jobs such as bank tellers, cashiers and clerks. Mr. Prentice has headed this program for many years and is partly responsible for the increase in the programs popularity. Six girls presently make up this years COE or Cooperative Office Education program. COE offers students interested in business, an op- portunity to advance their skills. This class, made up of Sonny List, Janet Yukna, Janice Ridings, Carol Mabey and Sandy Lorenzette, enables students to work in business offices during school hours. 102 Distributive Education Sports . . . It was a year that saw only three returning lettermen on both offense and defense. As a result, many unfortunate mistakes were made by the young and inexperienced. No opponent can say that they overpowered the football Bombers. Tough losses by less than a touchdown to Dover, Mt. Olive, Randolph and Morris Hills showed the power of the defensive squad. Impressive statics against Pope Paul VI and West Orange Mountain showed the potential of the veer offense. The team graduates only four seniors thus returns with a strong nucleus next fall. Seniors Larry Sauchelli, Steven Onopa, Rich Bosland and Bill Stitt will be sorely missed for their leadership and enthusiasm. The entire coaching staff extends the Best of Luck to them in the future. The freshman team showed that football is on the rise and they are a force to be reckoned with in the future by ending their season with a 5-4 record. They did not give up, from here they tumbled over Pompton Lakes and beat them by 12 points. The heat was on when West Morris gave Boonton a challenge. After the first two events, Boonton was down by one point. West Morris had difficulty staying on the beam and Boonton took the lead. Going into the last event, floor exercise, the Bombers were ahead by one point. However, West Morris jumped over Boonton and won the meet by only a one point margin. Taking a hard defeat the girls lost their next meet against Jonathan Dayton. A little confidence got them ready for Morristown. The meet was predicted to be another close and exciting one. Down to the last event, the pressure was on Elisa Bevacqua who would be competing 112 her floor routine for the first time. Nervous but determined she came thru scoring a 6.85. Morristown did win the floor event by two tenths of a point but it was not enough to win the meet. This was the closest meet of the season and the Bombers won it by one and a half tenths of a point. Overall they ended their season with a 6-6 record in the North Jersey Conference and a 5-4 record in the Iron-Hills conference. The team scored in the high 80's and low 90's but this wasn’t high enough to qualify them as a team for the Sectional meet. Four girls qualified as individual participants. Special recognition goes to the team captain, Leigh-Anne Obenhuber. Leigh Anne qualified in all four events. She took third on the beam but missed six place all around by a tenth of a point. Each of the scoring people on the team is as important as the teams' best. With out the other four members, one is nothing. The 1982 pre-season looked promising. The opening match, against last year's conference champs was to set the stage. What should have been a close contest turned out to be a rout, Randolph winning. The next two meets, at home, saw both teams winning over Mountain and Montville. What should have been a winning season quickly turned into a disastrous one. The boys lost their next five meets, the girls their next four. The follow-the-leader dual meet season ended with wins over Hanover Park. Individual honors were achieved by both team leaders. Glen Middle - ton placed third at the Dover Invitational (Junior Meet), fourth in the Iron-Hills Conference Meet, and fourteenth in the prestigious 29th Annual Morris County Championships. On the distaff side, Vicki Scozzafava lead her squad with a fourth place finish at the Dover Invitational (Sophomore Race), fifth in the Conference Meet and seventh overall in the county meet. This was the 10th year of team scoring for the girls. This years’ team captains were Seniors Hector Martinez and Amy Erny. Hector was lauded as the - Most Improved member of the boys squad, improving his home course record by over three minutes. Amy, although running with many aches and pains throughout much of the season, was an inspiration to her team mates. The biggest surprise of the season was the addition of two outstanding first year people; sophomore David Della Pesca and freshman Andrea Forte. David and Andrea quickly contributed to their teams strength by running themselves into the 2 and 3 positions respectively. Additional help was rendered by other first year runners: Senior Eric Weltner; Juniors, John Snell and Adam Westervelt; Sophomores Scott Kimball and Nancy Connerton and Freshmen David Tlack, Nich Sor-ochnskyj, Robert Lach and Brian Pierson. Much of a teams success goes to the middle runners of a team. Striving to make a new personal bests keep the competitive spirit alive. Juniors Steven Forte and Lynn Grene-vich each bettered their 1981 Bests as did this years Most Improved female runner, Noreen Cassidy. No-reen worked her way up to the number two position with a summer of hard work. The ghost of the boys team this season was Tim Nexon. One never knew where he might finish, first or last, however great things are still expected of him, said Coach Horton. The teams and Mr. Horton were disappointed with their over-all record this year and promise a winning season for 1983. In post dual season competition both teams faired well. The girls finished sixth in the conference, tenth in the county and sixth in the Group II Sectionals. The boys placed sixth in the conference, eleventh in the coun -ty, in the Sectionals and twelfth in the statewide Group II Championship. Dispite all these adversities the team showed a lot of character as they played each game with a tremendous degree of intensity and desire. J. Metcaff: William Hino Vice-Principal The most important part of all The struggle we go through. Is that of finding out what we Are best equipped to do. The calling that is ours in life, According to the way, That we can do the greatest good For others everyday. It matters not how smart we are In terms of high degrees, Or how much time we give to thought At universities. But only that we know that we Are content to give To make it fair and easier For other folks to live. And then to use our talents to Accomplish what we start, And render every service with Sincerity of heart. Scheffer Words are almost too ineffective to describe Olga but the three adjectives that nearest approximate her are: Pretty, Peppy and Popular. She is jammed full of vim and vitality and accomplishes her tasks quickly. She is honest and has discharged the duties of one of the most important school offices, President of the SRA, very commendable. Blond, dainty and diminutive, she is a divine dancer and is in constant demand. It has been lots of fun knowing Olga and with her we connect many of our most pleasant memories of Boonton High School. ECHOES 1935 The above was written when Mrs. Olga Mitchko graduated from Boonton High School in 1935. Now, as Mrs. Mitchko retires after nineteen years of dedicated service, the above quotation is still apropos. Mrs. Mitchko returned to Boonton as a member of the faculty in 1964. She has served as the advisor to the National Honor Society for many years and was director of the Guidance Department for a number of years. Through the years, the students and faculty members have looked upon Mrs. Mitchko, not only for guidance, but also as a loving, supportive friend. We would like to take this opportunity to dedicate the 1983 ECHOES to OLGA MITCHKO. We hope that you and your husband continue to enjoy life. Also we would like to thank you for helping so many students recognize their potential.
