vasion of Afghanistan, the United States led a thirty-one nation boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. The untimely death of Led Zeppelin drummer, John “Bonzo” Bonham, forced the group to cancel its American tour. In 1980, our country witnessed an unusual presidential election as Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter by a surprisingly large margin. Independent John Anderson, who received eight per cent of the popular vote, provided the voters with an alternative to the two party candidates. The National League’s Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series, their first in the ninety-eight year franchise. Mohammid Ali was defeated by Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes in an attempt to regain the title for an unprecedented fourth time. Actor Steve McQueen died after a short bout with cancer, at age fifty. Americans experienced a high rate of inflation, mostly due to increased prices in oil products. The price of gasoline exceeded $1.00 per gallon and continues to rise. Many changes have occurred in the town of Boonton as well. After being closed for two years, the State Theatre reopened its once renowned vaudeville stage. As the bridge, entering town from Washington Street, underwent construction, the water in the Jersey City Reservoir was recorded at its lowest level. The years we have spent here will become a memory. As we reflect upon them, we recall the many events that have occurred in the world, country, town and in the lives of each individual. During the past year the world has changed considerably. The US Embassy in Tehran was occupied by Iranian militants who took fifty-three Americans hostage.
