As we reflect upon them, we recall the many events that have occurred in the world, country, town and in the lives of each individual. During the past year the world has changed considerably. The US Embassy in Tehran was occupied by Iranian militants who took fifty-three Americans hostage. One year later when the border dispute between Iran and Iraq developed into a heated military conflict, serious negotiations were undertaken for the release of the hostages. As a result of the Russian in vasion of Afghanistan, the United States led a thirty-one nation boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. The untimely death of Led Zeppelin drummer, John “Bonzo” Bonham, forced the group to cancel its American tour. In 1980, our country witnessed an unusual presidential election as Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter by a surprisingly large margin. Independent John Anderson, who received eight per cent of the popular vote, provided the voters with an alternative to the two party candidates. The National League’s Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series, their first in the ninety-eight year franchise. Mohammid Ali was defeated by Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes in an attempt to regain the title for an unprecedented fourth time. Actor Steve McQueen died after a short bout with cancer, at age fifty. Americans experienced a high rate of inflation, mostly due to increased prices in oil products. The price of gasoline exceeded $1.00 per gallon and continues to rise. Many changes have occurred in the town of Boonton as well. After being closed for two years, the State Theatre reopened its once renowned vaudeville stage. As the bridge, entering town from Washington Street, underwent construction, the water in the Jersey City Reservoir was recorded at its lowest level. The Boonton School District employed the first female superintendent in Morris (Continued on page 7) Led Zeppelin Steve McQueen Crowd cheers as drought is finally broken. See page 112 for complete story! Ruth Ann Vetere and Sandra Lorenzetti County, Mrs. Ruth Krawitz. Eleven new teachers joined the high school staff last fall, as many new teachers left or retired. The senior class has many accomplishments to be proud of. As juniors, the class of ’81 proved to be successful in its magazine drive by exceeding their goal by almost five thou-(Continued on page 10) 7 class of EIGHTY-ONE sand dollars, total: $14,894.98. This year’s senior class was therefore able to purchase all its SRA membership cards on the first day of sales. Boonton showed real improvement in fall sports. The cross country team received its first area ranking, the soccer team qualified for the state tournament and the football team triumphed with their first victory after a twenty- one game losing streak. The students demonstrated their enthusiasm in Spirit Week by participating in: “T” Shirt Day, Punk Fifties Day, Warm-Ups Hat Day, Dress-Up Day and 10 Red-Black Slave Day. As time goes by, we realize that Boonton High is only a stepping stone toward future endeavors. As we grow older, the world outside becomes closer and more realistic. .« 11 ...the class of 1981 says_ GRADUATION Bombers Do It Best • ■ co-ed gym classes! Caldwell, the season's opener was a big disappointment to the players and coaching staff. The team was really psyched,” but a little too anxious. The following Saturday, Morris Hills could have been their first victory, at half time the score was 21-6, Boonton. In the second half everything went in favor of the home team. Penalties, fumbles and an intercepted pass brought the “Knights back to a 28-21 victory. The next two weeks the Bombers were still recovering from this disappointment and failed to generate any momentum against either Dover or Mt. Olive. The real opportunity for a victory would have to be against West Orange Mountain. After a scoreless first period Boonton capitalized, late in the second quarter, via a 15 yard pass from junior quarterback Eric Weliksky to senior back John Giar-dina. This proved to be the deciding margin. Boonton had finally won! The following week Hanover Park and Boonton battled to a 14-14 contest. Boonton had to settle for the tie, after a missed field goal with seconds remaining on the game clock. The remaining three games, against tough Group III teams; West Morris, Randolph and Parsippany, proved to be too much for the injury riddled squad. In each contest (continued on page 113) 112 however, the kids became more competitive, they were just beginning to believe in themselves, remarked second year head coach John Stack. He continued, “the program looks to be on the upswing, we have an enthusiastic group of juniors returning next year.” Junior Gerald Pinney was the team high scorer for the season. Gerry scored four touchdowns and one two point conversion for a total of 26 points. His 27 receptions, totaling 429 yards was also high total yardage for the varsity squad. Outstanding players included Mike McHugh, Steve Watson, Ron Digiacapo, Art Inza, Andy Samoszeggi and Jeff Estler on the offense and Mike Bevacqua. Ray Roller, Dave Baum and Jeff Bosland on the Defense. Congratulations to the Freshmen team for a super year. This year's freshmen football team, under the direction of coaches Angelo Questa and Kevin Petry compiled the successful season's record of seven wins and two losses. 115 This past season was both rewarding and disappointing. Since the team was hampered by many injuries, it achieved only a .500 record. The Bombers produced victories against Dover, Hanover Park, Morris Hills and West Orange Mountain. Outstanding players included: Dan Beltran, John Koval, and Tony Lasalandra who also participated in a lot of varsity action. The coaching staff expects much strength from these players in the future. Contributions for next season are also expected from: Mark Bellini, Steve Kerlin, Robert Krok, Steve and Karl Onopa, Tommy Zaher and Tommy Madine. JV Battle for .500 Record 116 New Individual and Team Records The 1980 Gymnastic team provided another winning season in the fall sports program. They finished their season with a 7-1 record in the Iron-Hills Conference and an 11-2 overall season’s record. Under the leadership of senior captains Ann Petonak and Gail Spies, the team qualified for the North Jersey Sectionals, where sophomore Leigh Anne Obenhuber won individual recognition for her third and fourth positions on the uneven parallel bars and the balance beam. She also proved to be a big factor during the season, breaking several school records. Leigh Anne now holds all school records with scores of: 9.3, 8.65, 8.95, 9.2 and 35.1 on bars, beam, vaulting, floor and all-around respectively. She was also named to Donna Amari Diane Paul Leigh Anne Obenhuber Palty Yelpo 118 the Morris Country All Area Gyn-mastic Team. By efforts of each team member, the season proved to be a winning one. Individual competitiors included: seniors Patti Yelpo and Diane Paul; juniors, Patty Boland and Connie Ward; sophomore Ann Walcutt; and freshman Donna Amari who will be an asset to the team in upcoming years. Senior Holly Fisher also a member of the team, became ill early in the season. This kept her out of competition. In the last meet of the season, the highest team score was achieved against arch rival Montclair: Boonton scored 92.25. In the Morris County Tournament two team members also did well. Leigh Anne placed second All-Around, On bars and vaulting and fourth on beam. Ann Petonak was also victorious, placing fifth on bars. The team is looking forward to another great season next year with five letter winners returning for action. Ann Petonak The varsity soccer team ended its season this year with a 8-9-3 record, after gaining seats in both the county and state tournaments. This marks the first time the Bombers were seated in either of the tournaments. The Bombers’ offense was led by freshman Giancarlo Morelli who was leading scorer with 19 goals and was named to the first team of the Morris County Coaches’ Team. He was also voted to the second team, All Area, junior Chris White and Sophomore Frank Bevacqua completed the front line. Seniors Craig Calder, Todd Cox and Ron Wahler and juniors Andy Dock, Scott Willis and Sean Fischer were very effective at midfield. This year's defense, one of the best in the team's history, was led by senior captains Ferdie Manlangit (Honorable Mention Morris County Coaches Team) and Tony Kee. Senior Gordon Dixon, junior goalie Mike Homeijer, frosh Cemal Andi-can and senior subs Joe Westenber-ger and joe Bechtel filled out the squad. Gordon Dixon (BELOW) (ABOVE) Giancarlo Morelli 121 122 Steven Ough Learning Process for JV Squad Under the direction of Coach Frank Valvano the Junior Varsity soccer squad did not reach the level of success as did the varsity. Their season record of 1-13-5 did not give a fair statement of accomplishment to the team. Each and every member of the team gained necessary experience needed to make the move to the varsity squad next season. 123 Cross Country Registers Best Season 10-2 The 1980 cross country season must be ranked among the school’s best. Five returning lettermen gave the harriers high hopes at the start of the fall campaign. The season began with a win and a loss. This early loss to Randolph (25-31) proved to be the decisive margin in the conference championship. The team won their next eight meets in a row, raising their season's record to an amazing, 9-1. The greatest thrill during this series of wins was an upset victory, the first ever, over then county ranked, Morris Hills. At this point the team received its deserved recognition by the local press. The team broke into the RECORDS’ Top-Ten Teams. This too, was a first for Boon-ton X-Country. The only other loss was to a very strong Parsippany team. The final record, an impressive 10 wins, 2 losses. This was the best in Boonton fall sports. Much of the credit for the successful year must be given to senior cocaptain Chris Chappell. Chris was only beaten three times in twelve dual meets. At mid-season he established five course records in five outings. At the Morris County Championship Meet, Chris’ 12th place finish led the team to be among the top ten. At the State Sectionals held in Elizabeth, Chris again led his team to a fifth place. He was fifth overall in the Group II, Section II race. For his outstanding season performance he was selected to the ADVANCE All County Team. Although Chappell excelled, the season would not have been a success without the running talents of his teammates. Seniors; co-captain Sam Yukna and Wilson Garcia, plus Juniors; Bob MacDonald and Roy Porter rounded out the returning lettermen. Yukna, who led training sessions for much of the summer was out with injuries for nearly half the season. His return to the line-up was instrumental in the victory over Dover. The biggest surprise was the added 124 Sam Yukna Wilson Garcia strength gained by the varsity squad from the incoming freshmen, they were: Glen Middleton, Timmy Nexon and Steve Forte. Middleton was consistently in the top five for the Bombers. These three, plus two others, Andy Vnenchak and Terry Hudson, placed second overall in the class oriented competition at the Fifteenth Annual Dover Invitational. The future looks bright for the team as a number of JV’s will be vying for a varsity position next season. Looking towards these positions will be: Charles VerHouve, Philip Chung, Hector Martinez, Ken (ones, Richard Hubner, Tony Bonefede and Hadrian Alegarbes. Freshmen Glen Middleton and Tim Nexon Roy Porter Isabel DeSousa Captain Amy Erny The girls could not field a steady five person team. The regulars who competed were sophomores Amy Erny and Elizabeth Petersen and freshmen Isabel DeSousa and Lynn Grenevich. Others who aided were: Meg Dworak, Phyllis Beger, and Debbie Hereck. Their season’s record was 0-9, but the enthusiasm for next fall has not been dampened by the four. 125 126 Field Hockey Team Records First Shutout! This year’s field hockey team improved its fighting spirit and battled to a record of 4-9-2. This marked the best record in the short history of the sport at Boonton. The highlight of the season was a 2-0 shutout over Mt. Olive. This reversed an early season loss. Most of the improvement this year was due to the agressive offensive play of senior co-captains Janet Ven-trice and Roberta Custer; Roberta with her team leading five goals and Janet with her ball handling ability which led to several key goals. Two other players helped in the scoring totals, Donna Reeves and Claude Bouchard each scored twice. Several other individuals must be singled out for recognition: Susan Custer for her outstanding play on both offense and defense, Kim Roon for her game winning assist in the victory over Parsip-pany Hills and Beth Eggert’s outstanding efforts at goal tending with 102 saves on the season. Kim Johnson, Julie Sherman and Michelle Castellana also contributed their talents to the improved season. Three freshmen gained varsity experience and should be a big factor next season; they were Kacie White, Lisa Bechtel and Lisa Westenberger. First year head coach Kathy Castellanos was praised by her team for her unselfish efforts and support. A special thanks is extended to team manager, Sue Reynolds. Co-Captain Janet Ventrice Defense against the Comer: Sue Custer, Michelle Castellana, Claude Bouchard, Goalie Beth Eggert, Kim Johnson and Lisa Bechtel Kim Roon (8), Roberta Custer and Claude Bouchard (25) Coach Kathy Castellanos (r) Injuries Hamper Hopes With seven returning letter winners, the girls’ tennis team looked forward to a successful season. These hopes dwindled as several injuries struck the team. The first singles position was opened by four year letter winner Amy Dayton, but her injury led Sue Hinchman (8-5) to replace this position. Wendy Grisee (4-8), also a four year letter winner, took the second singles position while sophomore Laura Murtha (3-5) played third singles. The first doubles pair were seniors Cindy O’Sullivan (6-7) and Amy Dayton (5-8). Line Bouchard (4-8) and Andrea Pfreundschuh (4-9) played second doubles. Together, the team accomplished a final conference record of 5-7 and an overall record of 5-11. Sue Hinchman Line Bouchard Wendy Grisee Laura Murtha Andrea Pfreundschuh Cindy O’Sullivan 128 Bombers Finish With Three Wins Last year’s young Bomber team was badly battered in the early weeks of the season. Lack of experience at competition and a schedule of tough matches combined to keep the team winless for too long. Only in the last few weeks was the team able to break through and win. The boys finished by winning 4 of their last 6 matches, the final three in a row. Joe Westenberger John Mura 129 Wittner Named MVP at Montville This year’s team was led by Junior center (6'-5 ) Doug Wittner who received the Most Valuable Player Award at the Montville Christmas Tournament and has been the Bombers leading scorer in most of their games this season. With Wittner doing most of the scoring, the rebounding was dominated by Captain Fer-die Manlangit and transfer student Rich Hazinski. Floor leaders this season were the backcourt trio of John Jackson, Eric Wekilsky and Mike Norton. Each possesses a different quality; Jackson was the point guard and a good shooter, Wekilsky also a good ball handler and mid-range shot, while Norton was an excellent passer. Coming off the bench as the sixth man, Norton also demonstrated tenacious defense, causing numerous turnovers. The squad’s season record at presstime was 10 victories and 11 losses including tournament play. Rich Hazinski Joel Bechtel Mike Norton John Jackson 131 Frosh 500 Season Injuries plagued this year's Frosh team but they still achieved a 10-10 record. Captains joe Blauner and John Whritenour were the team leaders, Jeff Estler was the team's high scorer, but Andy Szamosszegi was selected MVP. Ron DiGiacopo, Dave Edwards and Steve Watson contributed greatly to the season. Andy Szamosszegi (13) Frosh Mike McHugh (55) Frosh Larry' Sauchelli (44) Soph Timmy Stickle (23) Soph Others who shared the playing time were: Steve Forte, Ed Lasen, Tony Petrare, Jeff Kostka, Jim Bolcar, and Tom Voelkner. Ken Martin and John Douglas demonstrated great potential in early season but were sidelined due to injuries. The ]V basketball squad finished with a team record of 6-12, however many of those games were decided by only a few points. Sophomore Larry Sauchelli was the team’s leading scorer, he was followed by sophomore Tim Stickel and freshman Mike McHugh. It was the first year for Coach O’Brien of Montville at Boonton. 132 JV “Army” Comes Out On Top What's Red and White, has thirty-two legs and a tremendous desire to win basketball games? The girl's |V basketball team! The 16 girl “army” had a most impressive season (16-5). High scorers for the baby bombers” were forwards Patrice Fitzgerald, (203 points), Laura Murtha (124 points) and guard Beth Nordquist (164 points). All three players were indispensible. Outstanding guards, Kim Procko and Valerie Taylor are sure to see varsity play next year. Amazing defensive play came from Laura Porter, Lisa Bechtel and Debbie White. Without their aggressive play, the squad would not have done such an incredible job. Freshman co-captains Patrice Fitzgerald and Laura Porter proved to be fine leaders for a truly remarkable team. The remainder of the team, although not seeing much playing time, gave 100% throughout the season. Miss LeBoeuf was the coach. Laura Murtha (33). Laura Porter (23). Kim Procko (5) Coach LeBoeuf. Winning big in their first four games, the Bombers hit a tailspin and lost their next three, including a five point decision to forceful Morristown in the Ron Brown Christmas Tournament Championship. Picking themselves up and showing steady improvement and development as a team, they won twelve of their next sixteen games. The Bombers earned sixth seed in the Morris County Tournament and fifth seed in Section II, Group 2 of the State Tournament, which they entered with a record of 16-6. They estbalished a school record for most victories in a season. They also accomplished a feat that no other BHS team had done in the fifteen years of the sport, that was, defeating arch rivals Parsippany and Morristown. On several occasions they proved their resilience by overcoming seemingly overwhelming deficits to snatch victories from the hands of defeat. We hope to continue this success with 8 returning letter winners and the continuation of the youth program. This year's squad featured: (Seniors] Ron Bonanni (115), captain Craig Calder (135) and Todd Rebele (148); (Juniors) Scott Auman (108), Ti-siano DiBonaventura (122), Mike Cor- rao (141), Mike Homeijer (170), Mike Buckingham (188) and Tony Lasalan-dra (Hwy); (Sophomore) Rich Scar-dilli (101) and (Freshmen) Rich Anderson (108) and Dan Gregory (158). The match against Mount Olive left everybody in a state of shock. With three matches left, Boonton was down 13-30. There was only one way to win. Mike Homeijer, Mike Buchingham and T-O-N-Y had to pin, and they did! The final score was 31-30 BOONTON! Outstanding individual efforts should also be recognized. Ron Bonanni left the opposition in AWE as he finished the season undefeated with a 22-0 record. Captain Craig Calder (ABOVE) Ron Bonanni (BELOW) Mike Buckingham Tony Lasalandra, a first year wrestler, gave a spirit boost to the team, he captured the audience's heart as some matches came to a final match decision with Tony eeking out a victory. Vincent Bacchetta and Craig Calder called upon each team member to give their best for great team efforts. Boonton also added to the season with a few victories in tournament play. Victories were chalked up by Ron Bonanni (1st), Vi-cent Bacchetta (2nd) and Tony Lasalandra (2nd). The team's final season record was 9 wins and 3 losses. Frosh Dan Gregory Coach Zavala Captain Vincent Bacchetta Mike Homeijer Todd Rebele Tisiano DiBonaventura Tony Lasalandra 137 Fitch League Championship Ours Raubenheimer Harbeson All-American The 1980 lacrosse season was very successful and most rewarding. The goals set for 1980 were to win every game and get into the playoffs. The team did not win every game but came on strong in May to defeat arch rivals Columbia (9-8 in OT) and Montclair (4-3) to gain the Fitch League Championship. The final record (11-6) was not an indication of how well the team played in May. The team trip to Maryland in early April did show the coaching staff the team strengths and weaknesses. The team strength was a known factor, DEFENSE. Co-Captains Frank DeLuca and Bill Harbeson were voted best in New Jersey on D . Brian Price and Phil Bolcar added the necessary strength to form an exceptionally close defense. What the team needed was an outstanding job from the goalie ... the answer was Peter Raubenheimer. Outstanding is an understatement. He excelled both in the goal and out. With the defense set, the main challenge was to work the younger, less experienced offense. An abundance of middies gave the squad quantity but all were inexperienced. Mike O’Rourke, Tony Kee, Jim Reed, Doug Mutter and Frank Conner were all experienced and did a fine job. Franchi was the leading middie scorer (26 5), while Reed, O'Rourke and Kee each scored important goals. The upperclass middies were ably assisted by sophomores Tom Zaher and Jim Hogh (who did very well at facing off) and frosh Dave Bentley. Mutter and O’Brien were the only two lost to graduation. The attack came on strong. Tony Bucco, Martin Wardamasky and Jim Nowaswiat were a balanced scoring squad. Wardamsky was the leading scorer with 36 16, Bucco 19 1. Jim Nowaswiat and James Melenkivitz did yeoman work assisting and riding. Mark Generoso frequently relieved both and also did well. The final game was a tingler ... having lost to Lawrenceville in mid season 16-10, no one gave Boonton Brian Price (RIGHT) much hope in the Coach’s Tournament final in Princeton. Hard-nosed, aggressive play on defense and good ball control on offense kept Boonton in the game. A game to remember, triple overtime ... 6-5 loss, but a proud group of Boonton players. Anthony Bucco Many players received post-season honors. DeLuca, Harbeson and Raubenheimer were selected first team All-State. Franchi and Wardamasky were chosen to the second team All-State and Kee received (continued on p. 140] All-State Frank DeLuca 138 All-American Peter Raubenheimer All-American Bill Harbeson (Front Row) Tom Zaher, Chad Capper. She also was the Group II Shot Champion with a toss of 12 meters (40 feet). Senior Karen Hey’s season’s effort was a new 100 meter hurdle record of 15.9, set in the North Jersey Group II Sectional Meet. Most events became new distances, hence new records. Outstanding individual achievements over-shadowed the poor team records of 2-7 for the boys and 2-6 for the girls. In the boys Morris County Meet, sophomore Bob Krok reached his peak to put the 12 pound shot 49'7Vi . This established a new sophomore school record as well as placing him fifth in Morris County. Pole Vaulter Mike Bentley honored Boonton by scoring in the Boys’ State Group II Meet. His eleven-six jump giving him fifth place, was the only score for the boys in post season meets. Junior Ferdie Manlangit set the school record in the new 100 Meter Dash at 11.4. Willie Cherry’s set the 200 Meter record at 24.4 and the 400 Meter mark at 54.2. The 800 Meter Run time was set by Sam Yukpa at 2:11.3. Chris Chappell set both the 1500 3000 Marks at 4:30.6 and 9:21.8. Mike Bentley (Pole Vault; 143 Gerald Pinney Gunther Schlottmann The Boonton Bomber Baseball Team for 1980 unfortunately suffered a disappointing season. The main problem was a lack of team hitting. The defense looked very good, however at time during the season, the defense had let downs. Physical and mental errors combined with poor team hitting resulted in a 7-13 season. On the positive side, a good number of underclassmen gained valuable varsity game experience. H. Adams As students enter high school they meet the people who will play an important role in forming their futures ... their teachers. Through the instruction and guidance the teachers offer, they become one of the greatest influences in the lives of their students. This influence can be readily seen in the faculty at Boonton High. Over the years, close friendships form bet- ween teachers and students, lasting even after graduation. Alumni are often seen walking the halls and visiting their former teachers, the ones who helped them with some of the most important decisions of their young lives. Frequently, words of gratitude are overlooked. It is not that the words are forgotten, or that this year's Seniors are ungrateful. So for all those teachers that took time out of their schedules to direct us. Definitely a more popular afreet! “Live For Today” Well, “Senior '81” is over, you know For so darn long we looked forward to it Already it's gone; it went by so fast But please, my friends, don’t dwell on the past. It was a great experience, yes, I agree There was friendship and fun and love and success There were failures and losses, problems and fears All leading to this end of the famous four years. Now all that we had and shared is finished The role of “senior was just a small part in life It cannot be made to last forever Our ties to high school we must now' sever. Don’t cry over the mem’ries, the good times, the last day Don't regret the mistakes or anything you did Just think it all over for a good short while Then be thankful you experienced it all and smile. You should be glad, for you’re a new you You’re now more knowing and more beautiful inside There’s a w'hole life ahead just waiting for you And all the fun, the love, and the friends will be new. Senior year can never come back Please don't wish it could; don't live in the past Get out there and love and give and live for today That you’ll leave yesterday alone is what we pray. — Chris Maurer —i
