:hoes • i9i EFLECTION Reflections... As “little Frosh” we began our high school years as our country celebrated its 200th anniversary. We felt the change as we shared in Viking I’s voyage to Mars, the world’s first test-tube baby, Louise Brown and the Three-Mile Island Nuclear Crisis. Pope John Paul II visited the United States, spending several days in New York City. We also witnessed the passing of such outstanding entertainment personalities as Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, John Wayne and Thurmon Munson. The sports world focused on North America with: the '76 Montreal Summer Olympics and '80 Winter Games. Mohammed Ali’s retirement opened the heavyweight title for Larry Holmes and Pittsburgh won the 1979 World Series by defeating Baltimore. The Women’s Lib issue played a big part in sports. Locally Karen Krawiec and Angela Hudson each achieved state titles in track and field. Sheri Speling demonstrated her prowess in gymnastics by establishing many new records. The 78-79 Girl’s Basketball team captured the NJ Group II, Section II Championship and the 79 Field Hockey team won their first game downing Hanover Park 3-0. In boys sports Boonton continued its dominance in lacrosse with a 1977 State Championship 3 Sue Sandrik and Sheila Murch The 1979 football campaign began with high hopes under new head coach Stack. We’ve seen the school day shortened to eight periods, the formation of the new Iron-Hills Conference, the addition of two vice-principals and the tightening of smoking regulations. Our final year blew in with “Himicane David” pounding the east with torrential rains that closed “most” area schools, but NOT Boon-ton. Lincoln Park students never made it. Gasoline became scarce, prices skyrocketed to nearly a dollar a gallon leading students to find more economical means of transportation, mopeds and school buses?... 4 Coach John Stack Reflections ... Education ... Tammy Saffioti Mr. Adams and Joe Zaccaro Karen Burke and Mary Polk John Koval Chris Comfort. Joe Bechtel. Assisting Mr. Szabo were: Mr. William Berryman, Ms. Valerie Stroh; percussion advisor, and Band Front advisors: Mr. Mike Lovito and Ms. Julianna Debski. Along with these new faces came new uniforms and new equipment for both band and squad members. Jim Larsen, this year's drum major, led the band into competition twice. The group placed third in the Governor Livingston Competition and fifth overall at the Chapter Championship in Elizabeth, competing against the best bands in the area. 77 78 Vernay Crowned Queen for 1979 On October 13th five finalists anxiously awaited the decision of the vote for this year’s homecoming queen. The production was under the direction of Mr. Peter Lubrecht. The story takes place in the early thirties on an English island estate of Lord Rancour. What was to be a pleasant weekend proved to be one of horror. The cast enjoyed performing their roles, since the show saw a departure from the strictly musical show series of the past. Musical Director.......Joseph Szabo Choral Director.....Karen Kennedy Choreographer..........Laurie Bohon 87 “Pippin , a soft rock musical fantasy, was presented by the BHS Drama Club last March. Bill Peer played the title role with Cecily Zahorian, Karen Griffin, Mark Schwartz, Amy Koreivo, Carol Lau and Jerry Langlois rounding out the cast. Under the direction of Peter Lubrecht, the musical is about the quest for fulfilment during the eighth century by Pippin, son of Charlemagne. The show covered a range of emotions and experiences, from pursuits of the mind and flesh, to the problems of war and politics and the quiet joys of domestic happiness. This production of Pippin”, one of the first to be staged in Morris County, included a cast of 53 from a record 114 students auditioning. Under the leadership of president Karen Fulcher, v.p. Sharon Terpstra, secretary Lorraine McAbee, treasurer Sheila Picciano, and the advisor, Mrs. Strucko, this year’s group worked hard to raise money for scholarships. A paper drive, a candy sale, and the selling of refreshments at the school plays were some of the activities NHS members involved themselves in in an effort to reach their goal of $2000. The scholarships were awarded at the annual banquet which was held at the Zeris Inn in May. The National Honor Society 93 94 The Concert Band, in its second year of direction under Mr. Joseph Szabo Jr., participated in a full season of concerts and activities. Beginning with the annual Prelude to Christmas Concert, the year also featured an exchange trip with the band from South Asburnham High School in Massachusetts. Candles, citrus fruit and potato chips were sold to raise funds for trips and for new equipment. The year ended with the Band Banquet and Spring Concert, both in May. Outstanding in personal musical achievement. Senior Karen Engert attained the position of first chair clarinet in the Area, Regional, and All-State Bands. Officers for 1979-80 included Wayne Migliaccio-President, Mary Monson-Vice President, Julie Gal-lager-Treasurer, and Suzanne Eberly-Secretary. 95 This year's WAMPUS staff, aided by the journalism classes, produced 4 issues of the school newspaper. Advised by Mrs. Malkin, the editorial staff included: Editor-in-Chief Sue Magill, News: Mark Laurenzi, Feature: Elaine Rafferty, Club: Karen Fulcher, Sports: Robbie Polizzi, Layout: Steve Semeraro and Art: Sharon Terpstra. The group launched new projects, sponsoring a concert by the upcoming rock group ‘Freewheelin’ and a carnation sale for St. Valentine's Day. The group reported on matters of interest to the student body such as the reaction to draft registration. Wampus Sponsors Rock Concert The 1979-1980 Humanitarian Club, under the leadership of President Ken Jones, Vice President Karen Fulcher, Recording Secretary Nancy Kromka, Corresponding Secretary Karen Engert and Treasurer Sheila Picciano enjoyed its second year at B.H.S. Composed of approximately 30 members, the club undertook sponsoring a marathon and a Blood drive during the year. The marathon, which annually contributes to One-to-One, was shortened from three days to one and was headed by chairperson Karen Fulcher. Although the Blood Drive, which was to benefit the American Red Cross required much hard work by all, it successsfully ended the year by accomplishing the Club’s goal of helping others. 96 BBC Celebrates 5th The Boonton Broadcasting Club celebrated its fifth anniversary this December. After five years, the BBC has grown from a few students with two turntables in the front office to a ‘Teal” radio station minus transmitter. During its first five years, the BBC has promoted many school events. The Club considers itself a progressive station; BBC deejays play just about any style music, so long as there is an audience for it. The Club includes deejays and engineers from all four classes. Despite a losing season, the team made great progress towards a winning football program at Boonton High. Under the direction of first year head coach John Stack, a new attitude towards football was established among the players and in the town. With coach Stack's help and the players dedication to him, there is great hope for the future. Under the leadership of senior captains, Frank DeLuca and George Bog-nar, the offensive team consisted of tackles: Guenter Schlottman and Angelo Cianci; guards: Sal Argento and Chris DeGeorge, ends: John Bonsiewich and Gerald Pinney, running backs: Mike O’Rourke, Ed Dock, Scott McCracken and Gary Hanke. Sophomore quarterback, Eric Wekilsky, is a hopeful brightspot for the future. The defense will be another big plus for the future. Tackles: Mark Drugac and Jim McHugh, Guards: Rich Kufta, Dan Beltran and Tony Lasalandra, Linebackers: A1 Dicarlo and John Giar-dina, will all be back next year. The rest of the defense was filled out by seniors, John Bonsiewich, George Bognar, Greg Pinney and Frank DeLuca. The defense was led by senior linemen Rocco DeFelippis and Nick Pellechia at the tackle slots and Mike Stitt at guard. Hopeful players for next year are Bob Moschella, Paul Allieri, and John Koval. The team’s outlook for next year is strong and they are hoping for an improved season. Their final season record was 3-5-1. The team, lead by quarterback Karl Onopa. came away with wins against Hanover Park (21-0), Mountain (13-8) and West Morris (13-8). Their final game of the season ended in a 6-6 tie with annual rival Parsip-pany. The leading rusher for the JV squad this season was John Giordina. Their final record was 14-1. During the season, senior Speling broke school records ten times. She now holds the records for bars, beam, floor and all around with 9.0.8.55, 8.9 and 34.2. Freshman Leigh Anne Obenhuber broke records several times and currently holds the record for vaulting with an 8.8 Underclassmen contributed greatly to the success of this year's season. The varsity squad consisted of juniors: Diane Paul. Anne Petonak. Barbara Spender. Gail Spies. Patty Yelpo; sophomores: Patty Boland and Connie Ward, and freshman: Leigh Ann Obenhuber. High points of the season were: the Iron-Hills Conference Championship, the second consecutive County title, the second place finish in the North lersey Meet and the eighth place finish in state-wide competition. Individual recognition was given to Sheri Speling and Leigh Anne Obenhuber for their outstanding season's performance by being named to the Citizen's Area Gymnastics Dream Team. The girls are looking forward to next season with eight varsity competitors returning. Nina Kurtz Traci Banks 110 Venturini Named to Citizen’s Area Dream Team Only four experienced runners returned for the 1979 season, however, the Boonton harriers recorded their best season in twelve years. Team captain Pete Venturini and newcomer Chris Chappell were the one two punch of the team. Veterans Wilson Garcia, Roy Porter and Bob McDonald battled first year men Jack O’Shea and Sam Yukna for the top five spot. Each man scored for the Bombers during the season. Garcia was the biggest surprise of the season being the third Boonton finisher in five different races. After dropping the first two meets to Hanover Park and Randolph the team battled back to beat W. O. Mountain and Mt. Olive. Again losses to Morris Hills and Whippany Park dropped the squad to 2-4. A second time the Bombers bounced back to even the season at 4-4 with wins over Montville and West Morris in extremely close contests with identical 27-29 scores. The season ended as it began with two losses, this time to Parsippany and Dover. Individually, Pete Venturini and Chris Chappell finished in the top ten at the Dover Invitational Meet to gain achievement trophies for their efforts. Pete was also selected to the CITIZEN Cross Country Dream Team for the county. The girls’ squad had difficulties right from the start. Only three experienced runners returned. The remainder of the team was comprised of untried freshmen. Senior Joan Donohue was consistently the first to cross the finish line for the team. Marie McMillan was the number two Boonton girl. Freshman Amy Erny showed tremendous improvement as the season progressed moving up to the third spot. Senior Karen Hey, frosh Sheryl Loos and Elizabeth Petersen also shared in the top five scoring positions over the season. At the Dover Invitational, Amy finished ninth in the frosh race to earn a medal. The girls finished the season with a 0-8 record — the poorest record since the team started. The team, led by team captains Peter Raubenheimer and Ken Post, was well balanced in both offensive and defensive play. High points of the season included victories over this year’s conference champion, Hanover Park and last year’s champs. Randolph. The most exciting game of the season was against W. O. Mountain, when Ferdie Manlengit successfully scored the winning goal with one minute remaining in the overtime period. This year’s leading scorer was John Castellana with eight goals. The boys’ final record this season was 7-7-5. John Castellana Gary Montalbano 114 Best Season Ever for Boonton Soccer Girls Begin to Roll The field hockey team lived up to all expectations by showing great improvement this year. In the fourth game of the season the Bomberettes dominated the field and soundly defeated Hanover Park. That proved to be the turning point of the season. The next three meetings with Morris Hills. West Morris and Ml. Olive produced tie games. The girls then topped their season off with a 1-0 win over Parsippany Hills. Standouts for the season weren’t hard to find. The indispensable player was sophomore Sue Custer, who provided us with both excellent defense as well as scoring three goals. Another sophomore standout was Donna Reeves. Her hard work and offensive leadership accounted for her three goals. Senior co-captain Shari Sperandio was also credited with scoring three goals. The goalie position was filled by co-captain Lynn Wahler who had a remarkable year with 58 saves and only 15 goals scored against her. After an injury sidelined Lynn, sophomore Beth Eggert filled in for the last two games and came away with eight saves. Wendy Grisee 119 Girls Continue Winning Ways The 1980 Girls' Basketball Team completed another fantastic season with a record of 18-3 (at press time) which included a second place finish in the Iron-Hills Conference. The Bombers were led in rebounding and scoring by junior co-captain Sue Hinchman. The ball handling and assists of senior co-captain Debbie Giordano, the consistant defense by senior Colleen Reynolds and the high scoring and frequent steals of sophomore Debbie Voelkner made each game an exciting exhibition. Others who shared in the playing time were seniors: Lynn Fitzgerald, Cathleen Reynolds and Joan Donohue and juniors Annette Greshko and Debbie Carey. Sophomores to break into the line-up were Donna Reeves and Sue Custer. Linda Rebyak was pleased with her first year results as head coach of the varsity squad. The Bom-berettes outscored their opponents 32 to 8 in the 2nd half. High scorers include: Beth Nordquist (121), Kathy Gallant (95), and Donna Reeves (94). Young Bombers 122 The JV squad wound up their campaign with a 10-11 record, piloted by Coach Don Schlenger. On the season, several outstanding leaders emerged: Steve Schinol led the scoring and rebounding stats, Steve Nicholson held high shooting per centage and Eric Wekilsky had the best foul shooting record. The outstanding event of the season was a twenty foot gamer by Eric at the buzzer against Hanover Park. The frosh, led by Mike Nowasiat and Tim Stickle ended their season with a record of 7-13. The rebounding of Larry Sauchelli and John Feaster and the defense and playmaking of Frank Bevaqua, Mike Gentile and Stephen Ough helped the young Bombers. The team relied heavily on its bench strength of Jim Macken, Mike King and Frank Huffs-tuttler. 123 The 1979-1980 Boys Basketball team, under the helm of first year head coach Jim Elko, ended their season with an 11-12 overall record and a 7-7 Conference record. Newcomer Mike Sodini was high scorer with 452 points, averaging 21 points a game. Senior Joe Leva was second with a total 241 points — 10 points per game. Returning senior letterman Kyle Gunderson averaged 8 points a game and tallied 168 points. Sophomore Doug Wittner, in a super debut, scored 165 points and also averaged 8 points per game. Leva dominated the assists with 94. followed by Sodini with 73 and Jim Palazzo with 60. The high point of the season was a victory over Group IV school Morris Knolls. Other senior varsity players were Ken Post and Vinnie DeFilippo. (Vin-nie returned to the line-up mid season after recovering from a broken wrist.) Underclassmen included juniors Ferdie Manlangit, John Jackson and Steve Nicholson and sophomore Eric Welilsky. 124 Sodini Honored by Press 125 Kyle Gunderson (ABOVE) Jim Palazzo (BELOW) D°Ug Wi ner (ABOVE) Senior transfer Jim Wallenburg strengthens Boonton's lineup. The team has progressed to a high level of wrestling this season. Of the two tournaments the grapplers entered, they finished 4th in the Lakeland Tourney and 3rd in the Parsippany Christmas Classic. This was a considerably better showing than in previous years. With 95% of the team being underclassmen, the season’s record was 6-9. Coach Zavala is very optimistic about the future. He also expects to end the jinx of Boonton Wrestling tradition. The bright spots of the team were Ron Bonanni (17-2) and Mike Buckingham (13-8) (Most Improved). The team played tough, hard-nosed ball, winning eleven of fifteen games. The team scored 129 goals and had 59 assists. This amount of assists is indicative of the teamwork which developed. The team had four leading scorers: Jerry Jacob (26 16), Joe Hogh (24 9), Kevin Oxley (26 4) and Greg Melen-kevitz (8 20). Each one had an outstanding season and added balance to the offense. Joe Zanone, Mai Rin-glieb, Tim Doherty, Joe Makfinsky and 128 Doug Melenkevitz all contributed to the offense and each one was an integral part of the team. Joe Hogh and Joe Zanone did a brilliant job on face-off, controlling the ball on over 75% of chances. The defense was superior all season. Stick work and ball control which developed made this defense one of the best in BHS history. CJ Ringlieb, Matt Beltran, Frank DeLuca and Bill Harbeson formed a unit which allowed fewer than five goals per game. The ability to clear the ball was one of the finer points of the unit. Frank DeLuca drew the toughest opponent in each game and allowed only three goals and two assists in fifteen games. The goal tending was shared by Senior Joe DiGiacopo and junior Peter Raubenheimer. Both had good years and each did a fine job in goal. They and the defense combined to hold the opponents to 70 goals in fifteen games. The Co-captains, Joe Hogh and Jerry Jacob, were exceptional players on a fine team and they were exceptional team leaders. They led, by example, on and off the field and have set a pattern for future captains. 129 130 131 The golf team finished its season on an upward note by winning six of its last nine matches for a season’s log of 6-11. The six conference wins put Boonton at a .500 in the Iron Hills Conference Hills Division and a tie for fourth with Hanover Park. The vast improvement was led by Senior Captain Nick DiAntono who finished as the winner of the Iron Hills Conference Meet, as well as fifteenth in the regional competition. Low round of the year was a 37 by Ron Snider. The home course was the Rocka-way River Country Club in Denville, The team was coached by Mr. Bruce Smith. Their record, 8 wins and 8 losses, is a deceptive barometer of the team's talent. Of the 8 losses, 5 were by one run and two were by two runs. The season was a frustrating one. The Bombers lost in the Morris County Tournament to Pequannock 1-0 and to Caldwell in the second round of the state tournament by the same 1-0 score. Despite these losses, the team handled themselves with dignity, never failing to get ready for the next game. The team, under the direction of Coach Williams, was headed by team captain Ed Bentley. The boys had a hard time getting started, losing their first 6 meets but finishing by winning their last two by identical 68-63 scores. A pleasant surprise was the turnout of three outstanding Seniors: Brian Patterson, Charles Rideout and Robert Sweisberger. Each contributed greatly in talent and spirit to the victories. Outstanding performances by underclassmen Roy Porter (5th) and Chris Chappell (4th), in the County Freshman-Sophomore 2 mile runs, the freshman shot relay team of Bill Krok, Doug Wittner and Mark Buckingham (3rd), frosh George Bernhard's first place in the long jump in the Livingston meet, and Ken Jones’ scoring in the High and Intermediate Hurdles. There were 23 girls who earned varsity letters this season, up from nine last year. Karen Hey was the 1979 Conference Hurdle Champion and Karen Krawiec the 1979 Morris County High Jump Champion. The relay team of Krawiec and Sheri Speling set the Conference High Jump Record of 9'8 . In the New Jersey North II Group II Sectional Meet, Karen Krawiec and Angela Hudson amassed a total of 22 points. Karen won the high jump and the long jump for 12 points and Angie won the discus and placed second by VS in the shot put for 10 points. What makes each staff unique is their individual interests. The Boonton staff is comprised of over 100 individuals including administration, guidance, faculty, secretaries, maintenance and kitchen personnel. These staff members were questioned. not on their class loads or subjects taught, but rather their free time activities. The responses from those who replied, may surprise you. Did you know that Mr. Gardner IS a gardener (he grows most of his own food) and raises chickens, as does Mr. Garbarini. Mrs. Garibaldi also enjoys dabbling in her rock garden. 180 Mr. David DuPre Guidance Guidance Mr. Roland Vitalctti Vicc-Principal Guidance Director I Miss Marcia Booth Guidance Mrs. Janet Bentley Secretary Mrs. Jean Caragine Secretary Miss Carmela Lanza Guidance Mrs. Olga Mitchko Guidance (Could it be the “G”?) Mr. Cunningham recently built his own log home in Rockaway Township. Mr. Donnelly enjoys wood working also, but on a smaller scale — furniture making. Mr. Dewar, Mr. Lisovsky and Mr. Trioanelli all enjoy hunting with old tyme black powder rifles. Mr. Moli-toris is Colonel Molitoris during the summer, activated in the U.S. Marines. Our diversified staff includes: an antique and jewelery dealer (Miss Epstein), a folk singer (Mr. Schlen-ger). an undercover security cop (?). two boat fanciers (Mr. Richley and Mr. Mercer), and a stamp collector (Mr. Korinda). Then there are the more physical types: X-country and downhill skiers (Mrs. Barnes. Mr. Berryman. Mrs. Kacur. Mr. Seugling. Mrs. Schindler. Sr. Cucchiara ...). a host of physical fitness nuts , mountain climbers, cyclists, and a number of bowlers, including Mr. Kane. As you can see. our faculty has a variety of interests. MICHAEL J.MRAZ, JR. We're confused about our future and how our lives will be led Unsure about the challenges and what lies ahead. We wander through the halls of a familiar old place f knowing the faces we see Will soon take our place. We ve seen sorrow and sadness laughter and tears. We've been through so much In just four short years. There will be a few tears As we all start to find There's a part of our lives We’ll soon leave behind. But it's now 1980 the year of the new And with a smile we will tell you Our life's not yet through. We have challenges to conquer and dreams do come true. Yet all through our future These four years will shine through! Lori Cetti 208
