Q asketball Seat eason The 1953-54 edition of the Boonton basketball squad was below par compared with those of previous years. However, the team salvaged an 8 win and 11 loss season to finish fourth in the Lakeland Conference fight with a 2 — 6 account. In the post season Jamboree at Passaic Valley and Dover, the Bombers played the best games of their entire season. Led by Ron Raquet with 182 points and Steve Avallone with 168, the Bombers got off to a slow start, losing to Pompton Lakes and Wayne. They bounced back by taking Morris Hills 41-38 and beating Roxbury 63-57 for a 2 — 2 record at Christmas vacation. After the recess they returned to be defeated by Butler but to win over the Alumni. Mt. Lakes, Dover, and Passaic Valley all defeated the Boontonites, but after downing Morris Hills again and losing the second of two to Dover, the Bombers gained three straight wins over Roxbury, Wayne, and Butler. Entering the Jamboree, the Bombers put up a fierce battle before losing to Passaic Valley 60-53. They rallied, however, to win the season's finale against Butler by a 70-49 score on the Dover court. The season's outstanding player was Leigh Gorman, the freshman sensation, who with Ron Raquet, Steve Avallone, Walt Cook, Larry Smith, and Ken McCaffrey formed the nucleus of the varsity squad. Although faced with a losing season, the Bombers gave all the opposing squads good games, and Coaches Potter and Moore improved the team continually throughout the campaign. VARSITY TEAM.
