in ® M. S Growing accustomed to changing classes, having alternate lunch periods, and spending long hours on homework, the freshmen soon overcame the problems of adjustment. They met many students, both newcomers and upperclassmen, and developed lasting friendships. Having won acclaim for their first unified effort, a variety show, the class of 1957 shows promise of completing four successful years in B.H.S. The FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS report to their advisor. Captain Bill Guida confers with Coach Shriner. We dr eered a Wl inning c eatr The '53-'54 edition of the Boonton High School football squad emerged as the most accomplished team to be seen on the Boonton gridiron in years. Compiling a favorable 5-4 record, the Bombers put a few recent years' teams to shame. Defeating Butler 26-20, a feat which had not been accomplished since 1950 and not at Boonton since 1947, the squad closed the door on one of the most successful seasons in the past twelve years. The season saw the Bombers displaying their first new uniforms in years and being suppressed in midseason with a temporary dispute of name. The new outfits, consisting of solid red pants and jerseys with black numerals, caused a small revolution in regard to a new nickname. Red Devils, Red Skins, and Red Raiders were all suggested, but finally Bombers was reinstated as the Boonton nickname. Playing a tough schedule, consisting of Newton, Roxbury, Morris Hills Regional, Madison, Passaic Valley, Pompton Lakes, Dover, Wayne, and Butler, Boonton surprised almost every scribe in the area. Captained by seniors Bill Guida and Tony La Salandra, the Bombers rolled on to some impressive victories. Such underclassmen as Steve Avallone, Ronnie Venturini, Bill Applegate, Butch Drugac, Craig Van Duyne, and Russ Jayne spurred the Bombers to victory and glory. The Bombers, however, suffered one of their worst defeats in history at the hands of the Group II state champions, the Dover Tigers. They accomplished some magnificent wins themselves with lopsided victories over Newton and Roxbury and a 13-6 comeback over Madison. Defeating Passaic Valley and our traditional Thanksgiving Day foe, Butler, put the cap on a jubilant season. The squad showed some of the spirit of the olden days in various spots throughout the season. Coaches Shriner, Gifford, and Vitaletti ran the boys with great efficiency. The boys themselves tackled and blocked harder than many previous year's teams. FRESHMAN TEAM. BOTTOM ROW (left to right): R. Beltran; J. Sheldon; T. Dunn; E. Dunn; C. Yukna. 2nd ROW: D. Walker; F.
