ECHOES'54 Vol. XXV Presented by THE SENIOR CLASS Boonton High School Boonton, New Jersey Seasons pass and grow into years, and the years roll swiftly by. Times change, and so do people, their fads, and their fashions. Even during the short span of four high school years we experience changes, both physical and mental. We encounter new situations, become self reliant, mature. It is this growth, from freshmen to seniors, chronologically through the school year, compared with progress during the last half-century, that we shall try to portray in the Echoes of 1954. CLARENCE E. BOYER Superintendent of Schools and both friend and guide to us, Mr. Boyer is greatly admired and respected by the Class of 1954. We dr eered a Wl inning c eatr The '53-'54 edition of the Boonton High School football squad emerged as the most accomplished team to be seen on the Boonton gridiron in years. Compiling a favorable 5-4 record, the Bombers put a few recent years' teams to shame. Defeating Butler 26-20, a feat which had not been accomplished since 1950 and not at Boonton since 1947, the squad closed the door on one of the most successful seasons in the past twelve years. The season saw the Bombers displaying their first new uniforms in years and being suppressed in midseason with a temporary dispute of name. The new outfits, consisting of solid red pants and jerseys with black numerals, caused a small revolution in regard to a new nickname. Red Devils, Red Skins, and Red Raiders were all suggested, but finally Bombers was reinstated as the Boonton nickname. Playing a tough schedule, consisting of Newton, Roxbury, Morris Hills Regional, Madison, Passaic Valley, Pompton Lakes, Dover, Wayne, and Butler, Boonton surprised almost every scribe in the area. Captained by seniors Bill Guida and Tony La Salandra, the Bombers rolled on to some impressive victories. Such underclassmen as Steve Avallone, Ronnie Venturini, Bill Applegate, Butch Drugac, Craig Van Duyne, and Russ Jayne spurred the Bombers to victory and glory. The Bombers, however, suffered one of their worst defeats in history at the hands of the Group II state champions, the Dover Tigers. They accomplished some magnificent wins themselves with lopsided victories over Newton and Roxbury and a 13-6 comeback over Madison. Defeating Passaic Valley and our traditional Thanksgiving Day foe, Butler, put the cap on a jubilant season. The squad showed some of the spirit of the olden days in various spots throughout the season. Coaches Shriner, Gifford, and Vitaletti ran the boys with great efficiency. The boys themselves tackled and blocked harder than many previous year's teams. FRESHMAN TEAM. BOTTOM ROW (left to right): R. Beltran; J. Sheldon; T. Dunn; E. Dunn; C. Yukna. 2nd ROW: D. Walker; F. Tony la Salandra, Bob Polyak, and Bill Applegate received special turkey awards on Thanksgiving Day for their splendid playing. Tony la Salandra was named to the first string tackle position in the county eleven and Ken McCaffrey made the second team as an end. Bill Guida and Steve Avallone were awarded honorable mentions to give the Boonton eleven good representation in the county. The starting eleven was one of the best in the county. With Ken McCaffrey ond Steve Avallone at ends, Tony La Salandra and Butch Drugac at tackles. Bob Polyak and Russ Jayne at guards and Carl Pauli and Frank Delaney alternating at center, the Bomber line was a nightmare to the quarterback. The backfield also performed notably. Bill Guida, as quarterback, called the plays that kept Boonton moving ahead. Ronnie Venturini and Bill Applegate at halves and Craig Van Duyne at fullback made a trio hard to contend with. Promising reserves such as Ken McDougall and Art Olsen at ends and Harry Van Kouteren, Bill Beltran, Bob Mariani and Tom Shaw in the center of the forward wall made it extra strong. The fine performance by reserve backs, Jim Bolcar, Jack Steinhauser, Leigh Gorman, and Tony Scozzafava allowed Guida, Venturini, and Applegate to rest for periods in the games. Despite the usual hardships and injuries ond even his own illness. Coach Shriner, with the aid of his fine assistants Ron Vitaletti and Al Gifford, earned much credit and admiration for helping the team to experience a winning 1953-1954 season. Dean Gallo tackles Passaic Valley player. Frank Delaney blocks ball carrier while Steve Avallone does some fancy footwork. 19 There's never a dull moment for the Varsity Cheerleaders as they cheer the Bombers on to victory. Members of the band learn a wide variety of marches and many intricate maneuver for Saturday football games. Not to be outdone by former classes, members of the class of 1956 began their high school career with a cooperative attitude and an ambition to become outstanding. They displayed their combined talents in a hit minstrel, The Gay Nineties , during their freshman year. As their minds and bodies grew, so did their ability to work together. They proved their cooperative spirit by producing an overwhelmingly successful soph hop, December Rendezvous. If past performances may be held as a criterion, unlimited possibilities lie ahead for the class of 1956. Q asketball Seat eason The 1953-54 edition of the Boonton basketball squad was below par compared with those of previous years. However, the team salvaged an 8 win and 11 loss season to finish fourth in the Lakeland Conference fight with a 2 — 6 account. In the post season Jamboree at Passaic Valley and Dover, the Bombers played the best games of their entire season. Led by Ron Raquet with 182 points and Steve Avallone with 168, the Bombers got off to a slow start, losing to Pompton Lakes and Wayne. They bounced back by taking Morris Hills 41-38 and beating Roxbury 63-57 for a 2 — 2 record at Christmas vacation. After the recess they returned to be defeated by Butler but to win over the Alumni. Mt. Lakes, Dover, and Passaic Valley all defeated the Boontonites, but after downing Morris Hills again and losing the second of two to Dover, the Bombers gained three straight wins over Roxbury, Wayne, and Butler. Entering the Jamboree, the Bombers put up a fierce battle before losing to Passaic Valley 60-53. They rallied, however, to win the season's finale against Butler by a 70-49 score on the Dover court. The season's outstanding player was Leigh Gorman, the freshman sensation, who with Ron Raquet, Steve Avallone, Walt Cook, Larry Smith, and Ken McCaffrey formed the nucleus of the varsity squad. Although faced with a losing season, the Bombers gave all the opposing squads good games, and Coaches Potter and Moore improved the team continually throughout the campaign. VARSITY TEAM. Organizations such as the Student Council and Student Court provide us with the opportunity to practice self-government by proposing legislation and conducting trials for those who violate the regulations. Regulation of student affairs is accomplished with a minimum of faculty intervention. 30 veryone During school hours and at numerous evening activities, the Receptionists and Senior Ushers extend courteous greetings to all guests. Although experiencing a poor season last year, the Bombers developed some fine players, among them Bill Guida, Dean Gallo, Ron Venturini, and Richie Block. This group, with Craig Van Duyne, who was out with a broken finger last year, and Leigh Gorman, should form the nucleus of a well developed squad. The infield is set with Richie Block playing third; Ron Venturini, short; Craig Van Duyne, second; and Leigh Gorman, first. Pitching should be satisfactory with a lineup of hurlers consisting of Dean Gallo, Jack Steinhauser, Bill Pfost and Frank Gambelli.
