These clubs have done much toward the development of talent, social life, and learn- ing in the years at Boonton High. The Fashion Club has enjoyed a very success- ful year under the able guidance of Miss Wart- luft. Mr. Korinda aids the Stamp Club in identi- fying some new stamps. Boonton High opened the 1952-53 football season with eleven seniors returning to the B.H.S. gridiron for the last time. Among these were Pug Shriner, who made All-State third-team lineman, and Bob Bolcar, who re- ceived honorable mention in Morris County. Jim Morris, Jack Pittenger, Frank Apgar, Joe Cerbo, Ken Teeling, Joe Krautheim, Bob Anderson, Bob Crocetti, and Bob May completed the eleven. Our first game of the season was played at home against a big Newton eleven. lntercepted passes and bad breaks were the prime factors in the 23-0 defeat of the inexperienced Bombers. The following week found Boonton traveling up to play the Roxbury Gaels in a freezing night tilt, but the Gaels proved to be very aggressive and romped to a 37-0 victory. On October 10, the Bombers were hosts to the stub- born Rockaway Rams, under our night lights. Although the ball was in Boonton territory most of the time, the teams were well-balanced, and the Bombers threatened several times. However, the Rams capitalized on a few bad breaks and squeezed out a 9-0 victory. Boonton and Madison played a close game. Lead- ing at half-time, 6-0, on Apgar's plunge from the seven, the Bombers started the second half enthusiastically, but the Dodgers soon recovered, started a rally, and edged out the Bombers, 13-6. Much of the same pattern followed in the games with Passaic Valley, Pompton Lakes and Wayne as we were beaten by the scores of 20 7 12 10 and 14 7 res ec- 1 r ' 1 ' 1 ' P tively. The Dover game was played in the midst of rain and mud. With their usual running attack foiled, the Tigers resorted to passing, thus scoring twice in the first half and going on to win 28-0. The best played game of the season was the last of the year, played at Butler. Guida and Avallone teamed up to score twice on long passes, but the Bulldogs were not easily swayed. As the final score of the annual turkey day game, we found Butler leading Boonton, 32-13. Although the red and black didn't have a very successful season as far as winning goes, the team had the right spirit and was well supported throughout the season by a loyal student body. It can be said that the Bombers fought hard right up to the last minute, and in the process, many promising players were uncovered, which should lead to a 'kegfcmd ds Our Coach Shriner can always be found ready to give a helping hand. ' 44 h wamom P0 e' ' Code '24 :de Considering the tact that the Bombers lost nine lettermen last year through graduation, their record on the basketball court this '52-'53 season has been better than average. The team won ten games and lost seven, a respectable record in any league, and in the process uncovered many pros- pective players who give promise of an even better season next year. Although there were plenty of exciting, well played games on our '53 schedule, the season's best game was played at Passaic Valley. This last game of the year was close all the way and the Bombers' fine exhibition of teamwork won the game for B.H.S., 55-5l. Besides the exceptional team play, Schleicher, as usual, was outstanding. Scoring 32 points and breaking Boonton High's all-time scoring record with 325 points, Johnny became the second highest scorer in Morris County. The Bomber's competitive spirit and skill on the court has been due to the excellent coaching abilities of Mr. Potter, Mr. Backus, and Mr. Moore. Next year's starting team loses the service of John Schleicher, Boonton's high scorer, Pug Shriner, playmaker, Otto Padovano, high scoring forward, Dave Mailler, brilliant rebounder, and Rolland Taylor, set shot artist. With the completion of the T953 season, Bruce Van Duyne, Bob May, Ed Chesnut, Bill Thomson, Orval Wert and Frank Curran have also played their last game for B.H.S. Early season tryouts have shown exceptional interest this year. How- ever, since few starting players are returning, the first few games will be experimental, as the squad must be cut from sixty would-be-Sluggers to twenty-five working team members. Although any statements would be mere guess work, this year's pitching will very likely be of high calibre, mainly through the able assistance of John Schleicher, who made All-State last season, and Dean Gallo, a hard- throwing Junior. The infield, except in one or two places, seems to be shaping up well with Pug Shriner at first-base and Ron Venturini and Ray Sullivan return- ing lettermen. The outfield is the only doubtful link in the chain. However, both Roy McCormick and Jim Morris look very promising. Boonton will play an estimated sixteen game schedule this year, and from all appearances they will be a hard team to beat.
