' r i—£L FOOTBALL Under the very able and experienced direction of Coach Kieffer Shriner, the 1948-49 team including many veteran players looked forward to a very successful season. The team was captained by Joe Mehalick and Leo Yartsura, and managed by Tom Crocetti. The season opened with a very hard fought game against a mighty Pompton Lakes eleven who finally came out on top and handed Boonton her first defeat to the tune of 21 to 13. Boonton was not quite up to par and the following week the Red and Black received another loss from Roxbury by the score of 19 to 14. The next game really showed the Bombers' hidden strength when they trounced Rockaway, 44 to 0. This night game proved to be the start of a five game winning streak. The next game was a sure 14 to 0 victory over Madison. Then Passaic Valley fell before the victorious march of the Bombers by the score of 19 to 7, and Mountain Lakes was halted, 13 to 0. The following week a thriller with Hawthorne was played,------- Boonton reigned victorious with the final score standing 26 to 13. The most heart-breaking game of the season took place when the Bombers traveled to Dover. There under the worst weather conditions imaginable, the Red and Black received their most pronounced defeat of the season by the score of 24 to 0. Thus the 1948 football season ended on Thanksgiving Day with the Shrinermen coming out on top, defeating Butler 13 to 0. This game left Boonton with the final standing of six wins, three losses and no ties. r r ' L L L I I L r, r. The hard-i ghtinR Smitty passes one to Kent Van Duyne who hooks it in for two more points. Meanwhile -Joe Mehalick and Leo Yansure are pleying terrific defense. This was t.he team-work that scored ten wins and six losses for the 1949 Basketball season. However, this wasn't all that was responsible for the team's success. The efficient coaching by Mr. Y illiem Potter and Mr. Charles Backus, and the fine support given by the second and third strings also contributed to this seasons very commendable record. r j j j j f i j r THEY • St Joseph's .....Ul •Paterson Tech .......32 • Alumni •••••••••••••• 38 • Butler •••••..... 37 •St Joseph's••••••••• h1 .Mountain Lakes••••••• 33 .Dover.............••• 31 .Passaic Valley........35 .Pompton Lakes....... 6U .Dover • ••••••....... .Paterson Tech ••••••• 35 .Butler................ .Pompton Lakes•••••••• 56 .Mountain Lakes••••••• H2 .Passaic Valley • •••• 51 .Butler (jamboree)• •• Hl QASGflALZ. Both squads are ably coached by Mr. .Arthur Meryweather. The Cross Country trackmen composed of mostly freshmen, competed in four meets, Blair Academy, Butler High, Dover High, and the County Meet in which they attained fourth place. These novices show great possibilities with continued experience and practice. Running and field events come under the heading of Spring Track. The demonstrated field events include shot put, javelin, pole vault, discus, and high and broad jumps. Many outstanding trackmen who performed consistently last year in sprints and distances returned for this year's track activities. They are Ler Prentice, speed demon of the 100 and 220 yard dashesy Bill Savareoc, who specializes in the UUO; Ed Koehler of the mile run; Dick Gardiner, Carl Schleicker, Ken Tfeyant and Bob 7f all ace in the middle distances; and Don Hermey, who sprints and sails the hurdles. GIRLS’ SPORTS Who said basketball was for boys? Apparently they have not seen our girls' basketball teams in action on Monday afternoons in the John Hill Gym. These teams, composed of girls from each gym class, were coached by Miss Melosi. The climax of the season came when one of the teams challenged the women teachers in a rollicking game that ended in a 14-14 tie. Volleyball is another indoor sport gaining popularity with the girls at B.H.S. Girls from the various gym classes formed the two teams which were ably coached bv Miss Taylor. The games were played with vim, vigor, and vitality. In these sports the girls have had a good season, combining good fun and healthy exercise. 1 % -vT2 -s I ' ■ f z +‘JE m ' f '9L -y v •g w ■ V 3.
